The Fractal Audio Systems AX8 is an all-in-one amp modeler and multi-effects pedalboard processor: a digital floor unit that puts Fractal's amp, cabinet and effects modeling under your feet in one box. Premier Guitar described it as "almost a pedalboard version of Fractal's flagship Axe-Fx II modeler," and Fractal itself says it runs the same Quantum Amp Modeling Technology core engine as that rack unit12. It was the company's first "all-in-one" unit to combine amp and cab modeling with effects, after the earlier FX8 had offered Fractal effects without the amps for players using conventional amplifiers23.

The AX8 has reached end of life. Fractal notes that its firmware is upgradeable and that owners received many updates over a long run, including a later one with improvements borrowed from the Axe-Fx III1.

What it is and what it does

The AX8 packages Fractal's rack modeling in a floor pedalboard controller. Guitar World's Chris Gill called it "a powerful, industrial-strength floor pedalboard controller," and the build reflects that: steel and aircraft aluminum form the chassis, with a folded steel bar that doubles as a handle and protection for the surface hardware16. It is a compact digital rig for players who travel without amps and cabinets2.

Inside are over 222 Quantum amp models using the same modeling technology as the flagship Axe-Fx II, plus more than 29 drive pedal models, so overdrive, distortion and fuzz sounds sit alongside the amp and cab blocks in one signal chain1. Presets are built from a series of blocks arranged on a "4x12" layout grid, with eight easy-access scenes per preset1.

The controls

The AX8 employs 11 switches arranged in 5 columns4. The switches numbered one to eight can select the preset in a bank, switch individual effects in a preset, or call up the eight scenes that every preset can hold3. Bass Gear Magazine's Sean Fairchild highlighted a dedicated rotary encoder knob section for the amp model in the current preset, with controls for Drive, Presence, EQ, Gain, Master and more, each ringed by green LEDs that dynamically display the setting4.

Control areaWhat it does
Switches 1 to 8Select presets in a bank, toggle individual effects, or call up scenes3
Rotary encoder sectionAmp model controls: Drive, Presence, EQ, Gain, Master and more, with green LED rings showing settings4
Rear-panel jacksFour sockets for external expression pedals or extra footswitches3

For external control, you can plug four external switches or expression pedals (like the Fractal EV-1) into the onboard jacks to control wah, whammy, volume "or virtually anything else," or use MIDI or the onboard controllers1. MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen noted that these four rear-panel sockets add flexibility for live work3. The unit also has MIDI in and out jacks1, and its MIDI implementation maps functions to controller numbers, for example CC 11 for Output 1 volume, CC 10 for Input 1 volume, CC 35 for volume increment, and CC 25 and CC 27 for external controllers 10 and 127.

Connections and outputs

The back panel holds an instrument input with Fractal Audio's "Secret Sauce" circuitry, a stereo-in/stereo-out effects loop that can be repurposed as a utility input or output, and jacks for the four external switches or expression pedals1. Bass Gear Magazine lists the I/O as one 1/4" input, four external controller inputs, one 5-pin MIDI in, and a stereo pair of effects returns that double as an auxiliary input4.

For outputs, the AX8 has stereo main outputs with XLR, 1/4" Humbuster and S/PDIF connections1. Premier Guitar summarized the connectivity as 1/4", XLR and S/PDIF outputs2. A practical detail for gigging: the AX8 can output a cab-simulated signal to front of house while simultaneously feeding a power amp and conventional guitar speakers, so you can run the house mix and a stage rig from one preset1.

What reviewers said

Reviews across the press were positive. Guitar World gave the AX8 its Platinum Award in 20176. MusicPlayers.com's reviewers wrote that "playing the Fractal Audio AX8 felt like playing a real amp in the studio"5. Premier Guitar's reviewer found the tones held up at both ends of the dynamics:

"The fat, three-dimensional tones have stunning dynamic range. Delicate playing sounds … delicate, with detailed, naturalistic decay2."

Premier Guitar1

MusicRadar's verdict was blunt, with very few reasons to avoid it overall3:

"Solid build. Good price. Loads of sounds."

MusicRadar3

In a comparison against the Line 6 Helix, Bass Gear Magazine's Sean Fairchild judged the quality of the audio and models from both units fantastic and both professionally usable4.

Where it sits in the Fractal line

The AX8 is a digital modeling unit, built for players who want to travel with compact digital rigs in lieu of cumbersome amps and cabs2. It carries 11 footswitches arranged in 5 columns, and its control panel includes a dedicated rotary encoder knob section for the amp model, with controls for Drive, Presence, EQ, Gain, Master, and more, each ringed by green LEDs that display the current setting4. Its chassis is built from steel and aircraft aluminum, with a folded steel bar that doubles as a handle and protection for the surface hardware62. Players comparing floor multi-effects units today will find the AX8 on the used market rather than new.

Questions

Is the Fractal Audio AX8 still made?

No. Fractal Audio states the AX8 has reached end of life. Its firmware remained upgradeable, and owners received many updates over the product's run, including a later one with improvements borrowed from the Axe-Fx III.

How many presets does the Fractal AX8 hold?

The AX8 holds 512 presets. Each preset uses a 4x12 layout grid of effect blocks and can store eight scenes, so a single preset can hold multiple variations you can switch between from the footswitches.

How many expression pedals can connect to the Fractal AX8?

Up to four external controller pedals or switches can be connected through the rear-panel jacks, and they are not included with the unit. They can be assigned to control wah, whammy, volume or other parameters, and MIDI controllers work too.

What outputs does the Fractal AX8 have?

Stereo main outputs on XLR, 1/4 inch Humbuster and S/PDIF, plus a stereo-in, stereo-out effects loop. It can send a cab-simulated signal to front of house while feeding a power amp and conventional guitar speakers at the same time.

How much does the Fractal AX8 weigh?

MusicPlayers.com measured it at 11.8 lbs, and Premier Guitar described it as weighing less than 12 pounds. Its dimensions are roughly 16 by 10 by 4 inches, in a steel and aircraft aluminum chassis.

What warranty does the Fractal AX8 carry?

A one-year limited warranty. Both MusicPlayers.com and Bass Gear Magazine reported the same one-year coverage when they reviewed the unit.
