The FuzzHugger Bass Bloom is a bass-oriented fuzz pedal released by FuzzHugger FX on 11 March 2012. It is a bass adaptation of the company's Algal Bloom fuzz, developed with Smallsound/Bigsound, and it addresses the two complaints bass players usually have with fuzz: it adds more low-end response than the original circuit, and it carries a clean blend so your original tone sits underneath the fuzzed signal rather than being replaced by it1.

No Treble's Kevin Johnson described it at launch as "a bass-oriented version of their Algal Bloom fuzz," noting that "the new adaptation accounts for bass lovers by adding more low-end response and a clean blend to retain their original tone"1.

What it does to your sound

The Bass Bloom takes the Algal Bloom's fuzz character and points it at bass. The Algal Bloom itself is what FuzzHugger calls its "classic chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz"2, a circuit where notes hold their separation instead of collapsing into mush. The Bass Bloom keeps that chord-friendly quality but re-voices the circuit for the lower register, with the maker's stated aim of more low-end response1.

The clean blend is the feature that matters most to a bassist. Fuzz circuits often thin out the fundamental, leaving a buzzy top with no body. With a blend, you mix your dry bass signal back in under the fuzz, so the attack and the low fundamental stay audible while the fuzz adds grind on top1.

The controls

The one control named in the launch coverage is the Bloom knob, which "controls the amount of fuzz added"1. Working with the clean blend, it sets how much of the fuzzed signal enters the mix, from a light edge to a full fuzz wash, while your dry tone stays underneath.

For context, the parent Algal Bloom circuit carries a small control set. The standard Algal Bloom page lists a Level knob for volume and a Bias knob that "sets your overall hotness and thickness, from lower gain to higher gain than ever before," with the maker noting it scratches when adjusted3. Later Algal Bloom family pedals expanded this considerably: the Algal Bloom LTD 5-knob carries Thick, Push, Power, Highs and Level controls4, and the Doom Bloom, another Algal Bloom derivative aimed at low tunings, adds controls including Lows and Clipping/Headroom456.

Only the Bloom knob and the clean blend are documented1.

Power and connections

The Bass Bloom runs on a 9V negative tip adapter and takes no batteries1. That rules out a standard 9V battery clip and means the pedal needs a power supply from day one. The negative tip polarity is the common convention for most modern pedals, so a typical isolated supply or daisy chain with center-negative outputs will work.

For comparison within the family, the Algal Bloom & Blend runs on a 9 to 18V DC tip adapter, not included7, and the Doom Bloom is 9 to 18V adapter-only, center-negative8. FuzzHugger's current pedals generally use top-mounted jacks, which save board space2.

From the Algal Bloom to the Bass Bloom

The Bass Bloom sits in a family of Algal Bloom derivatives that FuzzHugger has built since the original circuit appeared91:

  • Algal Bloom: the original, described by the maker as a chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz2
  • Bass Bloom: the bass adaptation, with more low end and a clean blend, developed with Smallsound/Bigsound1
  • Doom Bloom: a reimagining that, per the maker, adds "new controls, more gain, lows, and more available headroom," designed to hold together with lower tunings on guitar, baritone or bass5
  • Algal Bloom Modified: a version the maker describes as slightly higher-fi, with lower noise and a touch more sustain1011

The Bass Bloom was the earliest documented branch of the family aimed squarely at bass players, arriving two years before the Doom Bloom took the same idea further toward drop tunings196.

Questions

Is the Bass Bloom true bypass?

Yes. No Treble's launch coverage of the Bass Bloom lists true-bypass switching among its features, so the pedal passes your signal unaltered when it is off. It runs on a 9V negative tip adapter and takes no batteries.

How many knobs does the FuzzHugger Bass Bloom have?

The launch coverage names the Bloom knob, which controls the amount of fuzz added, alongside the clean blend that lets you mix in your original tone.

What is the Bass Bloom based on?

It is a bass-oriented version of FuzzHugger's Algal Bloom fuzz, developed with Smallsound/Bigsound. The adaptation adds more low-end response and a clean blend so bass players keep their original tone under the fuzz.

Does the Bass Bloom keep the low end?

Yes, by two routes. The circuit was adapted for bass with more low-end response than the Algal Bloom, and a clean blend lets you retain your original tone alongside the fuzzed signal.

Does FuzzHugger offer hand-painted Bass Bloom housings?

Yes. No Treble reported at launch that custom hand-painted housings were available for the Bass Bloom, alongside the standard professionally printed circuit board and rugged aluminum enclosure.
