The Ibanez DPL10 Digital Pan Delay is a digital delay effect unit with stereo outputs that produce a delayed signal which switches or pans between the left and the right channels1. Made in Japan and produced from 1990 to 1993, it belongs to Ibanez's Power Series 10 and appeared in the company's Sound Effects brochure dated June 19901.

What it does

The DPL10's defining feature is the stereo panning of its repeats. The delayed signal moves between the left and right outputs, and the panning left/right speed can be set between 70 msec and 400 msec1. For a player, that means repeats that travel across the stereo field rather than sitting in one place, which is where the unit gets its "pan delay" name.

The unit also works as a conventional single-channel delay. Ibanez's own brochure copy, quoted by TONEHOME, says the DPL10 "also functions superbly as a monaural digital delay with a maximum delay of 800 msec"1. So a player can run it as a straightforward mono digital delay when a stereo rig is not in play, and switch to the panning behavior when it is.

Background and availability

The DPL10 was built in Japan during a production run from 1990 to 19931. TONEHOME, the independent Ibanez reference site, records the unit as never having been re-issued, and rates its current availability as good and its collectibility as average1. That combination suggests the unit turns up on the used market without commanding the prices of rarer vintage Ibanez delays.

The DPL10 has not been reissued. Any unit for sale today is an original 1990 to 1993 Japanese production1.

The 1991 list price was 235 DM, as recorded in TONEHOME's documentation of the period1. The unit sat in Ibanez's Power Series 10 alongside other digital delays of the era, such as the Ibanez DDL10 Digital Delay II and the Ibanez CD10 Delay Champ.
