The Jeds Peds P:i9 is a fuzz sold by the UK maker Jeds Peds as a DIY pedal kit, with a pre-built option for players who would rather not solder. The circuit is a boutique Muff style design: Jeds Peds calls it "My personal favourite boutique Muff" and describes the sound as "Its thick, its fuzzy, some might say its meaty too." The maker sums it up as "everything one would want from a fuzz!"1 It sits in the wider family of fuzz pedals, alongside other Jeds Peds fuzz kits such as the Fuzz Face kit, the Axis Fuzz kit and the Red Llama kit.

What it compares to

Jeds Peds states plainly that "This kit compares to the Skreddy P19." The maker adds a caveat worth reading before buying: "There is no endorsement or approval from any manufacturer and this information is for comparison only."1 In other words, the P:i9 is Jeds Peds' own take on that style of circuit, not a licensed copy.

The six versions

The P:i9 is sold at six levels, from a bare board to a finished pedal, so you can buy as much or as little of the build as you want1:

VersionWhat you get
PCB OnlyJust the plain PCB
PCB & ComponentsPCB, onboard components and any pots and toggle switches
PCB & Components and off board partsAs above with off board components (foot switch, Jacks, 9v socket, LED)
Full KitAs above with undrilled enclosure
Full Kit & DrillingFull kit with drilled enclosure
Pre Built KitAssembled by Jeds Peds, £39.00 GBP1

All kits require full assembly, and any images of completed PCBs on the product page are for reference only. Only the Pre Built Kit arrives assembled.1

How hard is it to build?

Jeds Peds rates the P:i9 as "an intermediate level build." The skills the maker says you need are to "identify components, calculate resistor codes and be able to solder them into place"1, so this is not a first soldering project, but it is not aimed at experts either. The board is laid out with beginners in mind:

  • Nicely spaced parts1
  • Slightly larger pads to assist you1
  • The PCB is designed to hang from the toggle switch and pots, which sets how it mounts in the enclosure1

Enclosure and knobs

The kit is supplied with a JP125B enclosure. Whether it arrives drilled depends on the version: the Full Kit includes the enclosure undrilled, while the Full Kit & Drilling option includes it with the holes already cut1. Whichever version you buy, the pedal needs 3 knobs, and Jeds Peds suggests medium sized ones. On the Pre Built Kit the knobs are not fitted by default: "you must add your knobs from the knob section or it will come without any!"1

The Pre Built Kit

For players who want the circuit without the soldering, the Pre Built Kit is assembled by Jeds Peds for £39.00 GBP. It comes with three conditions worth knowing before ordering1:

  • A 12 month repair warranty: "should a fault be developed I will repair it"
  • No returns accepted on these
  • A 1 to 4 week build time

Questions

Is the Jeds Peds P:i9 a finished pedal or a DIY kit?

It is sold both ways. Jeds Peds offers the P:i9 as a range of DIY options, from a plain PCB up to a full kit with a drilled enclosure, and also as a Pre Built Kit that the maker assembles for you.
