Kernom

9 pedals on Tonebox

Kernom is a French effects pedal maker whose products are all built around one idea: the Analog Morphing Core. As the company describes it, "The Analog Morphing Core is the architecture at the center of Kernom products"1. Instead of a pedal with a single fixed character, the Morphing Core lets a player move continuously between sounds on the same box, which is what gives the range its identity.

The line covers three effect types. The Kernom RIDGE is a multi overdrive pedal, the Kernom MOHO handles fuzz, and the Kernom Elipse is a multi-modulation pedal. All three carry MIDI in and out with control over every parameter, and preset saving is part of the design rather than an afterthought234.

What Kernom is known for: Analog Morphing Core

The Analog Morphing Core is the company's signature technology and the reason a Kernom pedal behaves differently from a conventional one. Kernom presents it as the shared architecture behind every product it makes1. In practice it means a single pedal can cover ground that would normally take several: the RIDGE is described as a multi overdrive, not one overdrive sound, and the Elipse is a multi-modulation pedal rather than a single chorus or tremolo box64.

Morphing also works in real time. Both the RIDGE and the Elipse have an expression pedal input. On the RIDGE it can be assigned to morph between two drive settings or any combination of knobs; on the Elipse it morphs between two presets, which Kernom positions for live expression64. Players who already use an expression pedal can treat it as a continuous control surface for the pedal's whole character rather than one parameter.

MIDI and presets run through the whole range. Kernom's own presentation of the brand sums it up: save your presets and control your sound through built-in MIDI10.

Kernom's MIDI connection uses a type A mini jack TRS MIDI cable, not a 5-pin DIN. On the RIDGE, using MIDI presets also requires an external MIDI switcher, which is not included2.

The people: Antoine and Jeremy

Kernom was founded by two people, Antoine and Jeremy. The company's technology page shows the two of them with the first prototype of the Analog Morphing Core technology, which places the founders directly at the origin of the circuit architecture the brand is built on1. Kernom remains a French operation: the RIDGE and MOHO are sold through a network of French dealers10.

Support: warranty, returns and repairs

Kernom backs its products with a non-transferrable limited warranty. It covers defects in material and workmanship from the original date of purchase, and applies when the product was bought from an Authorized Kernom Dealer. It does not cover used or second-hand products, and it does not transfer to a second owner8.

If a product fails within the warranty period, Kernom will repair or, at its discretion, replace it at no cost to the original purchaser89. Returns are simpler than at many small builders: Kernom has a 30-day return policy, and its support pages note the gear is also available at local music stores9.

  • Warranty: defects in material and workmanship, from the original purchase date, through an Authorized Kernom Dealer; non-transferrable, not valid on used or second-hand products8
  • Warranty service: repair or replacement at Kernom's discretion, at no cost to the original purchaser89
  • Returns: 30-day return policy9
  • Contact: support@kernom.com, for Return Authorization and information8
