The Korg ToneWorks 411FX is a multi-effect pedal, described in a JHS Pedals history of Korg's vintage ToneWorks DSP units as a "super multi-effect pedal"1. Like other multi-effects pedals, it puts a large number of effects in a single box, so a player can cover drive, modulation, ambience and more without a board of individual pedals.
What it does
The 411FX carries a lot of effects in one unit. Writing about Korg's vintage ToneWorks DSP pedals, Josh Scott of JHS Pedals put it this way1:
"but it has a lot of effects in it, if you go for that kind of thing."
Controls
The unit has switches for corresponding presets, labeled with random letters that, as the JHS Pedals article puts it, maybe stand for drive, tone, control, modulation, and ambience1. There is no confirmed meaning behind the letters, so the labels are best read as preset selectors rather than descriptions of what each switch does.
The user interface
The 411FX is not a pedal for someone who wants to twist a knob and play. Josh Scott, who has handled a very large number of pedals, said1:
"out of the thousands of pedals in my collection, it wins the award for most complicated user interface I've ever seen."
For a player considering one, that verdict is the main thing to know: the 411FX offers a lot of effects, but getting to them runs through an interface that even a well-traveled pedal collector found unusually involved1.
The JHS Pedals article describes the 411FX's design with some humor, writing that "The Spirit Animal for this one is apparently a jackal-cat hybrid"1.
