The Lehle 3AT1 SGoS is a stereo instrument switcher: a pedal that lets a player route any of three inputs, labeled A, B and C, to either of two switchable outputs, 1 and 2, using gold-plated relays. Lehle positions it for players who need to change between instruments or signal paths on the fly, and it can be remote controlled using MIDI program change commands as well as by foot12.

What it does

The 3AT1 SGoS permits stereo switching between up to three different instruments, so a player with, say, two guitars and a bass can bring any one of them to either of two amps or rigs. All inputs and outputs, plus the internal signal path, are stereo according to Lehle, so nothing is summed to mono on the way through12.

The switching itself is done by relays with gold-plated contacts, and Lehle describes the pedal as true bypass with active pop-and-click suppression. The company also points to durability: while a conventional switch can handle a maximum of 20,000 switching operations, Lehle puts the 3AT1 SGoS at 2 million switching operations. A processor based on ARM Cortex-M technology controls the switching operation, which Lehle says it does very fast and precisely3.

The pedal can also be networked with other Lehle SGoS switchers via a stereo jack socket, which matters if a board grows beyond one switcher1.

Controls and footswitches

Two of the three inputs feature a level control for volume adjustment, so instruments with different output levels can be balanced against each other1.

ControlWhat it does
Input ARouted to Output 1 with one press; pressing twice presents the input signal from A on Output 22
Level controls (two inputs)Volume adjustment, so instruments with different output levels can be balanced against each other1
FootswitchesMushroom-shaped LEHLE buttons mounted in the cover, with foot pressure transmitted indirectly via a spring3

The left-hand footswitch sends Input A to Output 1 when pressed once; pressing it twice presents the input signal from A on Output 2, according to the manual2.

The 3AT1 SGoS has no secondary buttons for programming. Lehle's Joki Schaller explained in the company's programming guide: "Since the 3at1 SGoS doesn't have the black buttons, use the foot switches instead. Press and hold for output 1, press and hold for output 2."5

MIDI

The 3AT1 SGoS can be remote controlled using MIDI program change commands. More than that, Lehle says SGoS switchers can receive MIDI program change commands, are easy to program, and can also send MIDI program change commands, functioning as a MIDI controller themselves1.

By default, in the factory mode 3, the pedal sends program change numbers 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36, because the footswitches have two states each. Joki Schaller of Lehle explained this in the company's 2017 programming guide, which also notes that the program change number shift function found on some other SGoS pedals does not exist on the 3AT1 SGoS5.

Power, size and price

The pedal runs on a DC supply of 8 to 20 volts and draws 97 mA of current, per Lehle's specifications1. Premier Guitar listed the street price at $320 USD4.

SpecificationValue
Power supply8 to 20 V DC1
Current draw97 mA1
Dimensions103 mm x 156 mm x 47 mm (4" x 6.1" x 1.9")13
Weight645 g13
Street price$320 USD4

At 97 mA, the 3AT1 SGoS draws more current than many small pedals, so a pedalboard power supply needs the headroom to run it.

Using both outputs

A point worth knowing before wiring a rig: the two outputs are switchable destinations, not an isolated splitter pair. Asked whether both outputs can be used at the same time, Lehle's answer is no: "to guarantee hum free operation a seperate isolation will be required like the P-SPLIT, LITTLE DUAL or DUAL SGoS." Players who need to feed two amps or a recording interface simultaneously would pair the 3AT1 SGoS with a dedicated isolator such as the Lehle Dual or Lehle Little Dual3.

Where it is made

The 3AT1 SGoS is made in Germany by Lehle GmbH, whose address is given as Grenzstr. 153, 46562 Voerde, Germany. The pedal is currently in production13.

Questions

Is the Lehle 3AT1 SGoS true bypass?

Yes. Lehle describes the 3AT1 SGoS as true bypass, with the switching done by gold-plated-contact relays and active pop-and-click suppression built in. The relays are rated for a long service life: Lehle puts the figure at 2 million switching operations, against a maximum of 20,000 for a conventional mechanical switch.

Can both outputs of the 3AT1 SGoS be used at the same time?

Lehle says no. To guarantee hum-free operation, a separate isolation unit is required, such as the Lehle P-SPLIT, LITTLE DUAL or DUAL SGoS. The two outputs are switchable destinations rather than an isolated splitter pair.

Does the Lehle 3AT1 SGoS work in stereo?

Yes. According to Lehle, all inputs and outputs, plus the internal signal path, are stereo, so a stereo instrument signal or a stereo effect chain can be routed through the pedal without collapsing to mono.

What MIDI program change numbers does the 3AT1 SGoS send by default?

In the factory default (mode 3), the 3AT1 SGoS sends program change numbers 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36, because each of its footswitches has two states. Lehle's Joki Schaller explained this in the company's guide to programming SGoS pedals.

Where is the Lehle 3AT1 SGoS made?

The 3AT1 SGoS is made in Germany by Lehle GmbH, whose address is given as Grenzstr. 153, 46562 Voerde, Germany.

What power supply does the 3AT1 SGoS take?

The 3AT1 SGoS runs on a DC supply of 8 to 20 volts and draws 97 mA of current, according to Lehle's product page.
