The Marshall JCM900 Overdrive is a compact overdrive pedal built around the circuit of Marshall's JCM900 amp. It comes in a black and gold enclosure, stands 52mm (2") tall and weighs 0.74 kg.12345

The controls: gain, contour, tone and volume

The pedal keeps things to the essentials. Guitar World lists the JCM900's controls as Volume, Tone, Gain and Contour,6 and gearnews.com's report on the Signature series confirms the same four knobs plus a footswitch.64

ControlWhat it does
GainSets the amount of overdrive
ContourFine tunes the midrange frequencies with precision, per Marshall7
ToneShapes the overall EQ character
VolumeSets the pedal's output level

The contour control is the knob that sets this pedal apart from a straightforward gain-and-tone overdrive. Marshall's product page says: "You can also fine tune your midrange frequencies with precision using the contour control."71 Midrange shaping matters on a JCM900-style circuit, where the amp's voice lives largely in the mids.

Marshall describes the pedal's tactile rotary knobs as enabling you to "shape your sound to match the distinctive characteristics of the original" JCM900 with ease.2

Power and connections

The JCM900 Overdrive runs on 9 V DC, center negative,1 the standard pedalboard supply. It has a single 1/4" jack input and a single 1/4" jack output.1

Marshall lists a play time of 30 hours when the pedal is not running from an external PSU, and an external power supply is not included with the pedal.3 If you plan to run it on a daisy-chained board supply, budget for a 9V center-negative adapter of your own.

Physically it is a small pedal: 0.74 kg in weight3 and 52 mm tall,2 in Marshall's black and gold color scheme.3

History: from the JCM900 amp to the Amp Series pedal

The pedal is Marshall's take on its own JCM900 amplifier. Marshall's product page describes it as "Inspired by the iconic JCM900 amp."1 MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley, reporting the launch, wrote that the JCM900 "has also been immortalised in pedal format."5

The amp behind the pedal has serious rock credentials. gearnews.com's Julian Schmauch, covering the NAMM announcement, noted: "You could see (and hear!) Motörhead's Phil Campbell playing a JCM 900 4100. This amp was also honored for the Marshall signature pedals."4 So while Phil Campbell is documented as a JCM 900 4100 player, not as a user of the pedal itself.

Guitar World's report on the NAMM 2025 launch framed the pedal's character this way: "the higher-gain reinterpretation of the amp that defined the next decade of riffs."8 In other words, where the JCM800 pedal in the same series aims at the earlier amp, the JCM900 pedal leans into the higher-gain voice that amp brought to the 1990s.

The JCM900 pedal takes its circuit from the JCM900 amp, the same amp Motörhead's Phil Campbell was seen playing, a JCM 900 4100.34 Guitar World described the pedal as "the higher-gain reinterpretation of the amp that defined the next decade of riffs."8 The siblings in the line are the Marshall 1959 Overdrive, Marshall JCM800 Overdrive, Marshall DSL Overdrive and Marshall JVM Overdrive.8

Questions

Does the Marshall JCM900 pedal take a battery?

Yes. Marshall lists a play time of 30 hours when the pedal is not running from an external power supply, which means it can run on an internal battery. An external power supply is not included with the pedal, so players who want to run it from a PSU need to supply their own 9V DC centre-negative adapter.

How much does the Marshall JCM900 Overdrive cost?

Marshall's own US product page lists the JCM900 Overdrive at $129.99 as of October 2026. Published pricing has moved around since launch: gearnews.com reported 209 euros at Thomann when the pedals came out in January 2025, and later reported a discounted price of $105.00, £96.00 or 112.00 euros at the same retailer.

Where is the Marshall JCM900 Overdrive made?

Marshall states the pedal is made in Vietnam and designed and engineered in the UK.

What does the contour knob do on the Marshall JCM900 pedal?

The contour control shapes the pedal's midrange frequencies. Marshall describes it as a way to fine tune your midrange frequencies with precision, sitting alongside the tone control so you can dial in the JCM900-style mid character.

Which amp is the Marshall JCM900 Overdrive based on?

The pedal is based on the JCM900 amplifier. Marshall describes it as inspired by the iconic JCM900 amp, and Guitar World called it the higher-gain reinterpretation of the amp that defined the next decade of riffs. Motörhead's Phil Campbell was seen playing a JCM 900 4100, the amp the pedal honours.
