The Marshall JVM Overdrive is an overdrive pedal from Marshall that aims to put the sound of the company's JVM amplifier into a compact stompbox. Marshall describes it as inspired by the JVM amp and says it delivers "precise, full-bodied overdrive and articulate response"1. It was announced in January 2025 at NAMM as one of five Signature pedals, each modeled on a namesake Marshall amplifier2.

Where some amp-in-a-box pedals only do one thing, the JVM covers a range: MusicRadar reported that the JVM pedal "promises all that same harmonic-rich electric guitar tone" as the amp3, and Guitar World noted that "like the amp it's modeled off, it can dish out subtle overdrives too, when thunderous riffs and soaring solos need not apply"4. Its distinguishing feature in the line is a built-in noise gate, useful for the high-gain sounds the JVM circuit is built around.

A JVM amp channel in a pedal

The JVM amplifier is Marshall's high-gain, multi-channel flagship, and the pedal is built around that sound. Marshall's product page says the pedal is "inspired by the iconic JVM amp"1, and Gearnews described it as bringing "the JVM sound in a compact pedal size"2. For a player, that means the pedal is aimed at the heavy end of the gain spectrum: saturated distortion with harmonics, rather than a low-gain boost.

That said, it is not a one-trick pedal. Guitar World's coverage at launch pointed out that it can also do subtle overdrives, mirroring the amp's own range from clean-ish edge to full saturation4. Marshall itself says the controls allow "precise adjustments across a wide range of tones, from rich, clean harmonics to the heavy, aggressive distortion"6.

Controls

The pedal keeps the control set simple, with four knobs:

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets the output level
ToneShapes the overall brightness
GainSets the amount of overdrive, from subtle to heavy
GateAdjusts the built-in noise gate threshold

The four-control layout (volume, tone, gate and gain) is confirmed by Gearnews2, and Marshall describes the design as "simple controls" that let you "shape your sound without hassle"26.

The noise gate

The gate is what separates this pedal from its siblings. Marshall says the built-in noise gate "eliminates unwanted noise in high-gain settings without compromising your sound"1. Guitar World's reviewer went further, noting that "this is the only pedal in the line with a built-in noise gate, and it's a welcome addition," with a single threshold control and a reasonably fast attack7. Gearnews also flagged it, writing that "the noise gate in particular should not be underestimated as for high gainers"2.

For anyone who has fought hiss and hum with a high-gain pedal, a gate on the same box means one less pedal in the chain. If you want to go deeper on the concept, see noise gate pedals.

Part of Marshall's amp-in-a-box pedal series

The JVM Overdrive is the fifth pedal in Marshall's Signature Pedals series, which brings the JVM amplifier's sound into a compact pedal2. Marshall describes the pedal as delivering "precise, full-bodied overdrive and articulate response"1. Like the rest of the series, it takes a Marshall amplifier as its template:

The JVM is pedal number 5 of the Marshall Signature Pedals, bringing the JVM sound in a compact pedal size2. Its four controls for volume, tone, gate and gain set it apart within the series, the gate being a control aimed at taming noise2.

Power, size and weight

The pedal runs on a 9V DC center negative supply, the standard for modern pedalboards, and the supply is not included1. It also has an internal battery option, with Marshall listing 10 hours of play time when no external supply is used1.

Its footprint is a standard compact pedal: 101mm wide (3.97"), 52mm high (2"), and 131mm deep (5.15"), weighing 0.74 kg15. The enclosure is finished in black and gold1.

The 10-hour battery figure applies only when you are not using an external power supply, and the PSU is not included with the pedal. If you plan to leave it on a powered board, budget for a 9V DC center negative supply.

Where it is made and what it costs

Marshall states the pedal is "designed and engineered in UK" and "made in Vietnam"1. The model number is PEDL-920145.

Pricing has moved since launch. Marshall's US store lists the pedal at $129.99, down from a list price of $159.99 (as of October 2026)5. In Europe, Gearnews reported a Thomann price of 209 euros in January 20252, and later noted the whole Signature line discounted there to $129.00 / £117.00 / 137.00€ as of January 20272.

The DIY angle

Before the official pedal existed, builders were already chasing the JVM sound. The Guitar FX Layouts blog (tagboardeffects) published a DIY "Baja JVM Overdrive" layout in February 2018, based on the Marshall JVM410 amplifier circuit8. Builders who verified the layout reported it "sounds real good," with one noting a minor niggle: a dip in volume when switching overdrive settings with both level pots maxed8. A later modified build, adding separate Marshall tonestacks per channel, was reported to be "much closer to the YT demos of the amp, especially in the high gain areas"8. It is a reminder that the JVM-in-a-box idea has a history in the DIY community, independent of Marshall's own release.

Questions

Does the Marshall JVM Overdrive have a noise gate?

Yes. It has a built-in noise gate with its own Gate control, and Marshall says it eliminates unwanted noise in high-gain settings without compromising your sound. Guitar World's reviewer noted it is the only pedal in the five-pedal Signature line with a built-in gate, calling it a welcome addition with a single threshold control and reasonably fast attack.

Can the Marshall JVM Overdrive run on a battery?

Yes. Marshall lists 10 hours of play time from the internal battery when no external power supply is used, and the supply is not included with the pedal. It also runs on a 9V DC center negative power supply, which is the usual way to power it on a pedalboard.

Where is the Marshall JVM Overdrive made?

The pedal is made in Vietnam. Marshall states that it is designed and engineered in the UK, where the company is based, so the design work and the manufacturing happen in different countries.

How much does the Marshall JVM Overdrive weigh?

Marshall lists the pedal at 0.74 kg. Its enclosure measures 101mm wide, 52mm high and 131mm deep, roughly 3.97 by 2 by 5.15 inches, which is a standard compact-pedal footprint.
