The Meris LVX is a Modular Delay System: a stereo delay pedal that, in Meris's words, "breaks the paradigm of pre-set delay types in favor of freedom and flexibility"1. Instead of choosing between fixed delay modes, you assemble a delay from processing blocks, with 2540mS of what Meris calls Highly Configurable Dual Delay, a true stereo 60-second looper, 99 presets and full MIDI control12. It was announced in May 2022 and shipped in late summer that year3.

The signal path is a hybrid: a premium analog path and analog mix bus, digitally controlled, with 24-bit A/D and D/A conversion feeding 32-bit floating point DSP1. The interface is built around a color screen, and the whole pedal is designed and built in California, U.S.A.14.

What the LVX does

Most delay pedals give you a menu of delay types: digital, tape, analog, reverse. The LVX takes a different approach. Its delays can be further processed with dynamics, preamp, filter, pitch and modulation elements, including what Guitar World's reviewer called "uncommon and unique processing like diffusion, bit crusher, ladder filter, poly chroma, granulize and more"6. The interface is separated into modules you fine-tune individually: Delay, Preamp, Dynamics, Filter and Modulation7.

In practice that means the pedal covers ground well beyond repeats. Premier Guitar's reviewer found it "filled with heaps of complex, unusual delays; modulation sounds from tremolo to vibrato, rotary, and flange; intense filtering, looping, and stereo reverbs"8. The architecture is aimed at players who want to design a delay from the ground up rather than pick one from a list.

The looper is a true stereo, 60-second design2. You enter it by holding the tap footswitch, and the three main footswitches then handle record and overdub, play and stop, and loop effects, with defaults of Play Once and Half Speed/Reverse1.

Controls and presets

The front panel keeps things simple: knobs for Time, Feedback, Mix and Mod, plus a Preset/Pages knob that also saves, and two controller knobs, C1 and C2, that adjust your favorite parameters on the preset page and edit values in the edit pages12. A color screen drives the deeper editing4.

ControlWhat it does
TimeSets the delay time for the active delay type1
FeedbackSets the feedback amount for the active delay type1
MixAdjusts the balance between dry and wet signals1
ModSets the modulation amount for the selected delay type1
C1 / C2Adjust favorite parameters on the preset page; edit values in edit pages1
Preset/PagesSelects and saves presets16

The four footswitches do double duty. In normal mode, footswitches 1 to 3 engage or bypass the preset, and the tap switch sets delay time. In Looper Mode they become Record/Overdub, Play/Stop, Loop FX 1 (Play Once) and Loop FX 2 (Half Speed/Reverse)1.

On the Preset Page, the C1 and C2 knobs adjust your favorite parameters above, so the controls you use most stay close at hand1. In Edit Pages the same knobs take on different jobs: C1 selects and C2 edits values1.

Power and connections

The LVX runs on 9V DC center-negative at 300mA through a 2.1mm jack1. GuitarPlayer's buying guide notes the power supply is sold separately9. Connections are stereo input and output on separate jacks, a dedicated expression pedal jack, MIDI in and out over standard 5-pin DIN jacks, and USB-C for firmware updates only16.

After the initial release, some users reported that certain third party power supplies were not powering the LVX consistently. Meris developed a hardware startup delay mod that increases compatibility with a wider range of supplies, and it is already included on any LVX shipped direct from Meris as of November 10, 2022. Owners of earlier units can contact Meris support to receive the mod1011.

During development, Meris tested with its own 9V supply along with MXR and Cioks units10. Supplies tested as compatible after the startup delay mod include the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 3 and 4x4, Strymon Zuma and Ojai, Voodoo Lab X8, Trutone 1 SPOT Pro CS12, Cioks Ciokolate, Rockboard ISO Power Block 9 and the MXR Iso-Brick Pro10.

Where it came from

Meris announced the LVX on May 18, 2022, describing it as the company's first release in over two years, with preorders at $599 and shipping in late summer1213145. MusicRadar reported the UK price at announcement as £6193. The pedal won Future Music's Gear of the Year 2022 award for Best Guitar Pedal1.

The LVX did not start from a blank slate. Delicious Audio notes that "the LVX inherits some algorithms from other Meris pedals like the Hedra, Polymoon, Enzo, and Ottobit Jr."13, and Pedal of the Day's review likewise lists processing elements drawn from the Meris family of Polymoon, Hedra, Enzo and Ottobit Jr.4. If you know those pedals, the LVX can be read as a place where their processing ideas meet a configurable delay architecture. Our pages on the Meris Polymoon and the LVX Modular Delay System cover those circuits in more detail, and the broader delay pedal category page sets the LVX among its alternatives.

Angelo Mazzocco, DSP engineer and VP at Meris, designed the delay lines. In Meris's own words from the product page1:

"I strived to make the delay lines in LVX completely configurable, giving you the freedom to mold LVX into the perfect extension of your playing."1

What reviewers said

Reception was strong. Pedal of the Day called the LVX "something to behold right out of the box, and you can spend hours getting lost in its sights and sounds"4. Guitar.com's Jason Mays rated it 9 out of 10, concluding:

"A pedal that challenges the notions of what a delay pedal is capable of and offers truly amazing scope for musical sonic experimentation"7

Guitar.com's ambient pedals buyer's guide named the LVX its "Best workstation ambient delay" in January 202515, and GuitarPlayer's delay pedal buying guide includes it among its picks15.

Questions

Which power supplies work with the Meris LVX?

The LVX runs on 9V DC center-negative at 300mA through a 2.1mm jack. After the initial release, some third party supplies did not power it consistently, so Meris added a hardware startup delay mod, included on units shipped direct from Meris as of November 10, 2022. Supplies tested as compatible include the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 3 and 4x4, Strymon Zuma and Ojai, Cioks DC7 and Ciokolate, and the MXR Iso-Brick.

Is the Meris LVX true bypass?

Yes, and it is selectable. The LVX offers relay true bypass or analog buffered bypass, so you can choose which mode suits your signal chain. The same selectable bypass arrangement appears on other Meris pedals such as the Polymoon and Hedra.

How long is the maximum delay on the LVX?

The LVX offers 2540mS of what Meris calls Highly Configurable Dual Delay, a little over two and a half seconds. The two delay lines are fully configurable rather than fixed to preset delay types, which is the core idea of the pedal.

Does the Meris LVX have a looper?

Yes. The LVX includes a true stereo 60-second looper. Holding the tap footswitch enters Looper Mode, where the three main footswitches handle record and overdub, play and stop, and loop effects such as play once and half speed with reverse.

How many presets does the Meris LVX hold?

The LVX provides 99 preset locations arranged in 33 banks of three presets each, including a favorite preset bank. Presets can also be edited from a computer using Meris's free prEDITOR editor and librarian software.

Where is the Meris LVX made?

Meris designs and builds the LVX in California, U.S.A. Premier Guitar's reviewer described it as a U.S.-built pedal. Customers outside the USA can receive service from Meris authorized distributors in their region.
