The Mooer GE250 is a multi-effects floorboard that combines amp modeling, IR-based cab simulation and a full effects engine in one unit. It carries 70 amp models built on Mooer's non-linear amp modeling technology from its MICRO PREAMP series, 32 IR-based factory speaker cab models and over 180 effects arranged in 11 effects blocks, with 255 preset slots12. It sits in the middle of Mooer's GE range: more compact than the GE300 but larger than the GE150, and offering higher-quality IR support and more features than the GE20013.

What sets it apart from simpler units in the line is Tone Capture, a function borrowed from the GE300 that samples a real amplifier and turns it into a new digital amp model on the unit23. MusicRadar's Rob Laing called it a "Kemper-esque" approach to building your own models3.

What it does: amp models, IR cabs and over 180 effects

The GE250's 70 amp models use the same non-linear modeling technology as Mooer's MICRO PREAMP series, and additional amp models can be loaded through the editing software1. Cab simulation comes from 32 IR-based factory speaker cab models that Mooer says are designed to emulate the sound and feel of a real tube amplifier26.

The effects side covers 11 effects blocks with over 180 effects, which MusicPlayers.com described as covering "all the bases from your favorite stompboxes" onward2. For practice and writing, the unit includes 60 drum tracks and 10 metronome options, plus pre-loaded presets for players who don't want to build their own from scratch2.

Tone Capture: sampling a real amp

Tone Capture is the GE250's amp-sampling function. Mooer describes it plainly: the function "allows you to sample and capture your real-life amplifier to create brand new digital amp models"2. In practice, you connect the unit to a real amp, run the sampling process, and the GE250 builds a new digital model from the result that sits alongside the factory amp models.

MusicRadar framed this as the GE250's headline trick, noting it "allows you to sample an amp to create new models on the GE250" and calling the approach Kemper-esque3. A later firmware fix addressed a bug when using the trail feature together with a Tone Capture sample7.

Connections and control

The GE250 carries a full set of I/O for stage and studio use. Outputs are stereo, with unbalanced 1/4-inch jacks and balanced XLR, and there is a headphone output on a 1/8-inch stereo jack12. A programmable FX loop with optional signal chain routing supports the 4-cable method and traditional amp setups2. MIDI is handled by a single 5-pin port that can automatically match the signal source and be set by the user as MIDI IN or MIDI OUT12.

The footswitch setup is similar to the GE300's, which MusicPlayers.com credited with added customization and control26. The enclosure is a black-on-white design, with black text on an all-white body and a redesigned expression pedal that MusicPlayers.com said added durability12.

The GE250 requires its original 9V 1A power supply, per Mooer's product page, so it is not a candidate for a standard pedalboard daisy chain1.

USB audio and recording

The USB Type-B port carries direct, low-latency USB audio, so the GE250 doubles as a digital audio interface for recording into a computer12. Editing software is included for building presets and loading extra amp models and IRs12. The box contains a USB cable, the power supply and a quick guide1.

Firmware history

Mooer's downloads page tracks the GE250's development7:

  • V1.1.0: finalized from V1.1.0 Beta; fixed a bug loading 32-bit impulse response files and a bug using the trail feature with a Tone Capture sample7
  • V2.0.2 (June 2020): added support for the new GNR/GIR filetype and increased GNR/GIR loading slots to 157
  • V2.0.6 (November 2021): added HOLD mode, requiring a two-second press and hold on footswitches to enter the tuner or looper, to avoid triggering them by mistake during a performance7
  • B2.0.0 (beta): posted as a beta Windows update7

Updating the firmware follows a fixed procedure: power off the GE250, press and hold the Bank Down footswitch, power the unit on, and keep holding the footswitch until the GE250 has booted into update mode7.

Where it came from and what the press said

Mooer announced the GE250 on 18 December 2019, with Gearnews noting it was "released officially today" and in time for Christmas4. MusicRadar reported a launch price of $499 in the US, with shipping from the end of 2019, and described the unit's size as sitting between Line 6's Helix HX Stomp and the larger Helix HX Effects3. By July 2024, Guitar World listed the GE250 at $3825.

Guitar World's launch coverage highlighted the 70 amp models, the 32 IR-based factory cabs and the footswitch setup borrowed from the flagship GE3006. MusicPlayers.com positioned the GE250 as "the perfect choice for those that need high-quality IR support, quality preamps/cab simulation" and a full effects engine in one box2.

Questions

Can the Mooer GE250 load third-party IRs?

Yes. The GE250 has 10 user slots for third-party impulse response files, each with 2048 sampling points, in .wav format. It also ships with 32 IR-based factory speaker cab models, and firmware V2.0.2 raised the loading slots for Mooer's GNR/GIR files to 15.

Does the GE250 work as a USB audio interface?

Yes. The unit has a USB Type-B port and direct, low-latency USB audio, so it can double as a digital audio interface for recording. A USB cable is included in the box along with the power supply and a quick guide, and editing software is available for building and loading presets.

How long is the GE250 looper?

The built-in looper has a 70-second capacity. Firmware V2.0.6 added a HOLD mode that requires pressing and holding footswitches for two seconds to enter the tuner or looper, so you avoid triggering them by mistake mid-performance.

Does the GE250 have an effects loop?

Yes. It has a programmable FX loop with optional signal chain routing, with a send jack at 600 ohm impedance and a return jack at 1 megohm. Mooer designed it for easy integration of external effects and for 4-cable method and amp setups.

Can the GE250 load NAM models?

No. The GE250 loads Mooer's own GNR/GIR filetype, supported since firmware V2.0.2 with 15 loading slots. Neural Amp Modeler support has appeared on other units in Mooer's GE line, not on the GE250.

How do you update the GE250 firmware?

Power off the GE250, press and hold the Bank Down footswitch, then power the unit on. Keep holding the Bank Down footswitch until the GE250 has booted into update mode, then follow the update procedure from there. Firmware files are posted on Mooer's GE250 downloads page.
