The Mooer R7 is a digital reverb pedal in Mooer's New Micro Series, the line the company built around compact "7" series pedals. It packs seven reverb types, from "Church" to "Cave", into a mini enclosure measuring 93.5mm deep by 42mm wide by 52mm high and weighing 155g, and each effect's settings can be saved to preset slots1. Mooer announced it in June 2020 at $99, a few months after the D7 delay and the A7 Ambiance reverb in the same series23.

For a player, it is a space-saving way to carry several reverb flavors on one board. Delicious Audio called it "a fully-fledged reverb workstation" that "gives the player 7 modes and 7 presets in one tiny enclosure"4. It is a mono pedal with a buffered bypass, so it differs from the stereo, DSP-bypass X2 version Mooer released in 2021, covered below.

Seven classic reverbs in a micro pedal

The R7's seven modes are built on what Mooer describes as "a brand-new set of unique reverb algorithms"1. Where the A7 Ambiance went for ambient and psychedelic territory, Guitar World reported that the R7 "leans towards more traditional reverb effects"2. Gearnews described it as "a feature-packed, wallet-friendly reverb pedal for any guitar rig" with "seven digital reverb effects in its compact enclosure"5.

Each of the seven effects has its own preset slot, so you can dial in a setting per mode and recall them as you switch1. GuitarPlayer highlighted "the ability to toggle trails on or off" as a key feature, along with the dedicated high and low-cut EQ6.

The controls

The R7 has five knobs. Mooer says the High and Low Cut controls "allow users to trim redundant frequencies and shape the tone freely"1, which lets you keep long decays from turning muddy or harsh.

ControlWhat it does
HCHigh-cut, trims top-end frequencies78
LCLow-cut, trims low frequencies78
Level / MixSets the reverb level against your dry signal69
DecaySets how long the reverb tail lasts6
Pre-DLYControls the amount of the reverb's pre-delay3

The pre-delay control is worth knowing if you are new to reverb: it sets a short gap between your note and the start of the reverb, which keeps fast playing articulate inside big hall and church sounds. Delicious Audio's multi-reverb roundup lists the R7 "with controls for Hi/Low Cut, Mix, Decay and Pre-Delay"9.

The trail function is switched between normal mode and "Trail On" mode, so the effect either stops dead or fades out naturally when you bypass it1.

Power: 9V DC, 200mA

The R7 runs on a 9V DC center negative AC adapter and draws 200mA; Mooer recommends its Micro Power supply1.

At 200mA the R7 draws more current than many analog micro pedals. If you power a board from a daisy chain, check that the supply's output can cover it, since an undersupplied digital pedal can add noise.

The box includes the pedal and an owner's manual1.

The R7 X2 update

In August 2021 Mooer announced X2 Series versions of its D7 delay and R7 reverb, available as of August 5 that year, with prices not confirmed at announcement10. The R7 X2 takes the original R7's format and expands it: Delicious Audio described it as combining "MOOER's best digital effects algorithms from the A7 Ambiance and R7 Reverb pedals" into 14 stereo reverb types, "gifting it with twice as many ins/outs, modes and footswitches"11.

The 14 modes, as listed by Gearnews, are Room, Hall, Church, Cave, Plate, Spring, Studio, Mod, Reverse, Wrap, Shake, Crush, Shimmer and Dream12. MusicRadar's review noted the pedal "can be run in mono or full stereo", with two inputs and two outputs, a 9V power supply at 300mA, and extra high and lo-cut controls to EQ the ambience8. Guitar World's review lists its controls as high-cut, low-cut, mix, decay, pre-delay, a save button, an infinite footswitch and a bypass footswitch, with a DSP bypass with switchable trails, and notes that "every setting can go fully wet"13. Mooer recommends using only the original power supply included with the pedal, as third-party supplies may cause noise or other unexpected issues14.

MusicRadar's verdict on the X2:

"Competitively priced, stacked with 14 high-quality sounds with storable presets from a compact form, the R7 X2 is a serious stereo reverb pedal that covers all bases from everyday ambience to super-dreamy soundscaping."
MusicRadar8

MusicRadar also positioned the R7 X2 as "a cheaper and more compact alternative to the Ocean Machine, especially if you have got delay covered elsewhere on your pedalboard"8. For players who only need mono, the original R7 remains the smaller and simpler option, with the same core controls and the same seven traditional reverb modes.

Questions

Is the Mooer R7 analog or digital?

It is digital. The R7 runs on a set of reverb algorithms, with seven reverb types from Church to Cave, and each effect's settings can be saved to preset slots. The later R7 X2 combines the digital algorithms from the A7 Ambiance and the original R7.

Does the Mooer R7 have true bypass?

No. Mooer lists the R7's bypass as Buffer Bypass, and Gearnews likewise describes it as a buffered bypass pedal. The updated R7 X2 uses a DSP bypass with switchable trails instead.

What power supply does the Mooer R7 use?

It takes a 9V DC center negative AC adapter, with a current draw of 200mA. Mooer recommends its Micro Power supply. That draw is high for a micro pedal, so a dedicated output is safer than sharing a small daisy chain.

Does the Mooer R7 have trails?

Yes. The trail function can be switched between normal mode and Trail On mode, so the reverb can either cut abruptly or fade out naturally when you bypass the pedal. The R7 X2 also has switchable trails.

Is the Mooer R7 stereo?

No. The original R7 is mono, with one 1/4 inch input and one 1/4 inch output. If you need stereo, the R7 X2 update has two inputs and two outputs and can be run in mono or full stereo.

How is the Mooer R7 different from the Mooer A7 Ambiance?

The R7 leans toward more traditional reverb effects, while the A7 Ambiance goes for ambient and psychedelic sounds. Both are seven-mode reverb pedals in Mooer's New Micro Series. The R7 X2 later combined algorithms from both pedals into one stereo unit with 14 modes.
