The Mooer R7 X2 is a dual-footswitch stereo reverb pedal that combines the digital reverb algorithms from two of Mooer's mini pedals, the R7 Reverb and the A7 Ambiance, into one regular-sized enclosure12. Where those earlier pedals split reverb players into traditional and ambient camps, the R7 X2 carries both sets of sounds: seven classic reverbs and seven modern ambient ones, 14 algorithms in total13.

Mooer announced the R7 X2 on August 5, 2021, alongside the D7 X2 delay, as an upsized and upgraded X2 Series version of the mini R745. It runs in mono or full stereo, stores a preset for each effect, and adds an Infinite function that endlessly extends the reverb tail for atmospheric soundscapes64.

Fourteen reverbs from the R7 and A7 Ambiance

The R7 X2's algorithm list is a straight merger of its two predecessors. The classic side comes from the R7 Reverb, a digital reverb mini pedal with seven effects ranging from Church to Cave9. The ambient side comes from the A7 Ambiance, which offered seven reverbs aimed at what Mooer called far-out guitar astronauts and psychedelic players10. MusicRadar describes the R7 X2 as "an omnibus edition of two of Mooer Audio's most-popular reverb pedals of recent years"6.

Modern AmbientMod, Reverse, Wrap, Shake, Crush, Shimmer, DreamA7 AmbiencePurple6

The two groups are distinguished on the pedal itself by LEDs arranged down the side, glowing yellow for the R7 algorithms and purple for the A7 algorithms6. MusicRadar's reviewer noted it takes a minute to learn which LED corresponds to which reverb type6.

The controls

The R7 X2 keeps the five-knob layout of the mini R72. Mooer groups the knobs as three EQ controls and two intensity controls1.

ControlWhat it does
High CutRolls off high frequencies in the reverb1
Low CutRolls off low frequencies in the reverb1
MixSets the balance of wet and dry signal6
DecaySets the length of the reverb6
Pre-DelaySets the pre-delay time; in the Spring algorithm this controls the length of the spring6

There is also a Save button for storing presets; pressing down on it lets you cycle through presets manually6. The micro-pedal's dials were upgraded to knurled metal on the X26.

Footswitches, presets and Infinite

The X2's second footswitch is its biggest functional change over the mini R7. Mooer calls it the TAP footswitch, used to change preset, while the BYPASS footswitch handles toggling; pressing both together turns on Preset Rolling Mode for switching between saved presets1. The same second footswitch activates the Infinite function, which endlessly extends the tone's tail for atmospheric soundscapes411. Delicious Audio describes it as a momentary trigger, so the effect responds to foot pressure in real time2.

For presets, Mooer gives each of the 14 effects a single designated save slot where you can store your settings and recall them quickly1. Delicious Audio frames this as a 7 preset system identical to the predecessor's2.

Trail behavior is configurable. Trail On sets the reverb to fade out naturally when you bypass the pedal, and Trail mode can be set to on or off24. MusicRadar lists the bypass as DSP bypass with switchable trails6.

Mooer recommends using only the original power supply included with the pedal, and warns that third-party power supplies may cause noise or other unexpected issues1. At 300mA it also draws more current than many analog mini pedals, which is worth checking against a daisy-chain power supply's per-output rating.

What reviewers said

MusicRadar's review was positive on sound quality, writing that "the reverb sounds are simply fantastic and cover all the bases you could wish for" and that even the spring algorithm "does a good job of digitally replicating the metallic splash of a hardware unit"6. The reviewer's overall verdict called it "a serious stereo reverb pedal that covers all bases from everyday ambience to super-dreamy soundscaping"6. Criticisms were that the Infinite function could be more friendly to lead guitar, and the LED-to-algorithm learning curve6.

Guitar World's Michael Astley-Brown found the algorithms "crystal-clear, with very few artefacts except on ridiculously long trails," recalling Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine, and listed the impressive algorithms among the reasons to buy3.

"This is a fantastic and really powerful Stereo Reverb Workstation, particularly as this form factor."
Stefan Karlsson, Guitar Pedal X7

Guitar Pedal X included the R7 X2 in its 2021 roundup of stereo reverb workstation pedals, noting its 14 algorithms, full stereo ins and outs, storable presets and Infinite function7. Gearnews included it in a January 2024 roundup of budget reverb pedals for home studio use, listing it at $93.008.

Questions

Is the Mooer R7 X2 stereo?

Yes. It is a stereo reverb pedal with two 1/4 inch inputs and two 1/4 inch outputs, and MusicRadar notes it can be run in mono or full stereo. The original mini R7 was mono, so stereo operation is one of the main upgrades in the X2 version.

Does the Mooer R7 X2 have trails?

Yes. It uses a DSP bypass with switchable trails, and Trail mode can be set to on or off. With Trail On, the reverb fades out naturally when you bypass the pedal instead of cutting off abruptly.

Can I use any 9V power supply with the R7 X2?

It runs on a 9V center negative supply and draws 300mA. Mooer recommends using only the original power supply included with the pedal, and warns that third-party supplies may cause noise or other unexpected issues. There is no battery option.

What is the difference between the Mooer R7 and R7 X2?

The R7 X2 takes the seven algorithms of the mini R7 and adds the seven algorithms of the A7 Ambiance, for 14 reverb types total. It also moves to a bigger enclosure with stereo ins and outs, a second footswitch, and Infinite and Trail On functions.

How many presets does the Mooer R7 X2 hold?

Mooer gives each of the 14 effects a single designated save slot, so you can store one preset per algorithm and recall it quickly. Delicious Audio describes this as a 7 preset system identical to the predecessor R7's layout.
