The Moog Moogerfooger MIDI MuRF is a filter effect pedal built around an array of eight resonant band-pass filters, the individual levels of which are set by eight sliders. A Pattern selector accesses 12 animation step sequences per frequency type, toggled via the Freq switch, so the filters sweep in rhythmic patterns rather than being swept by hand like a wah. MusicRadar described the range of results as running "from subtle tremolo filters to vocoder-esque effects to ever-evolving bass pulses"1.

The Moog Moogerfooger MIDI MuRF is a pedal in Moog's Moogerfooger line, with its input jacks at the rear of the pedal2. One reviewer's overall verdict was that it is "A unique and high quality effect with unprecedented MIDI control."2

What the MIDI MuRF does

The pedal works by passing the signal through eight resonant band-pass filters, each with its own level slider. The Pattern selector drives those filter levels through 12 animation step sequences per frequency type, and the Freq switch toggles between frequency types. Because the filter levels are set by sliders, the shape of the pattern can be drawn by hand as well as chosen1.

MusicRadar's review summed up the pedal's character this way:

"A unique and high quality effect with unprecedented MIDI control."

MIDI control and stereo outputs

The headline addition over the earlier MuRF is MIDI. MusicRadar noted that "the introduction of a MIDI input allows for full external parameter controls via this more widespread protocol"1. On the timing side, Molten Voltage's 2013 writing on MIDI pedalboards counted the MIDI MuRF among devices from cutting-edge effect companies that have made their devices "capable of synchronization to MIDI Clock", meaning the patterns can follow tempo from a MIDI source4.

The pedal is also stereo-capable. When both output jacks are used, the filters are split so that the odd numbered ones go to the left and the even numbered ones to the right, spreading the animation across the stereo field1.

MuRF versions and where the MIDI MuRF fits

Before the MIDI MuRF, the Moogerfooger MuRF already came in two flavors, the standard version and the bass version1. The MIDI MuRF revision brought the two together with editable patterns and MIDI control2. The related Moogerfooger range also included the MF-101 Lowpass Filter and the earlier MF-105 MuRF, covered separately on Moog MuRF and among filter pedals generally.

The MIDI MuRF is a pedal, with its input jacks at the rear of the pedal1. One reviewer summed it up as "A unique and high quality effect with unprecedented MIDI control."1

Clones and alternatives

For a sense of where the MIDI MuRF stands, one reviewer's overall verdict was that it is "A unique and high quality effect with unprecedented MIDI control."5 It is a pedal, with its input jacks at the rear of the pedal5.

Questions

Does the Moog MIDI MuRF sync to MIDI clock?

Yes. Molten Voltage, writing in 2013 about MIDI pedalboard control, counted the Moogerfooger MIDI MuRF among devices from cutting-edge effect companies that are capable of synchronization to MIDI Clock, so the pedal can follow tempo information from a MIDI source rather than being tapped in by hand.

Does the MIDI MuRF have stereo outputs?

Yes. According to MusicRadar's review, when both output jacks are used the filters are split so that the odd numbered ones go to the left and the even numbered ones to the right, giving a stereo image from the eight-filter array.

Is the Moogerfooger MuRF discontinued?

Yes. In August 2018 Moog Music announced it was calling it a day on the Moogerfooger line, ending production of the stompboxes after 20 years. The MIDI MuRF is therefore no longer made.

What is the difference between the MuRF and the MIDI MuRF?

The MIDI MuRF is a revision of the MuRF concept. Before it, the Moogerfooger MuRF came in two flavours, the standard version and the bass version. The MIDI MuRF adds a MIDI input that allows full external parameter control via the MIDI protocol, which MusicRadar described as unprecedented for the effect.

Is there a current clone of the Moog MuRF?

Yes. In June 2025 Behringer released the BM-15M Murf Box, a budget version of the discontinued Moog MuRF filter pedal, priced at $129.
