The Moog MuRF is a Multiple Resonant Filter Array pedal, part of the company's Moogerfooger line of effects. It runs your signal through eight resonant band-pass filters whose levels are set by eight sliders, with a pattern sequencer triggering volume envelopes across those filters in sequence. The result is animated, moving filter effects rather than a static tone shape: MusicRadar described its range as running "from subtle tremolo filters to vocoder-esque effects to ever-evolving bass pulses"1.

The pedal is discontinued. It launched in 2004 and was discontinued in 2018, when Moog ended the whole Moogerfooger analog range after 20 years2. Guitar World reports that used units now fetch over $1,000 on the secondhand market, and that the design has since been digitized as a VST plugin2.

What it does

The MuRF's core is an array of eight resonant band-pass filters. On the original MF-105, each filter's level is set by one of eight sliders, and the pedal's sequencer steps through the enabled filters in patterns, triggering a volume envelope on each one4. Pedal of the Day's reviewer, Mike B, described the filters as "8 warm and resonant filters, which are controlled by 8 sliders"4.

The Envelope knob sets the shape of each pattern's modulation4. On the later MIDI MuRF version, MusicRadar explained how it works: "The Envelope control is just one knob and sets the behaviour for all the filter triggers." At 12 o'clock, attacks and decays are even, like a triangle wave; rotating further lengthens the attack and decay, and continuing from there shortens the envelope into a pulsed shape1.

Vintage Synth Explorer sums up the musical territory the MIDI MuRF covers: "Whether it's morphing drones, stuttering lead lines, filtering drum patterns, or space age sequences, the Moog MIDI MuRF" delivers animated filter effects across its eight frequency bands3. It is a monophonic, single-part device with no oscillators of its own; it shapes whatever signal you feed it3.

The MuRF family

Two main versions of the pedal exist, and they differ in more than MIDI15.

The MF-105M MIDI MuRF arrived in 2009. Moog's press release, as reported by MusicRadar, framed it as a consolidation: "The MF-105M combines Bob Moog's classic MuRF and Bass MuRF to make one powerful" MIDI filter array pedal5. MusicRadar's review made the practical difference clear: "This latest revision rolls these two variants into one unit with a switch to change the filter ranges between mids and bass"1. In other words, where the original MuRF and Bass MuRF were separate pedals tuned for different registers, the MIDI MuRF covers both with one filter-range switch.

The original MF-105 MuRF reviewed by Pedal of the Day in 2015 is the older, non-MIDI version. The reviewer noted that the newest version of the pedal adds MIDI implementation4. If you are shopping secondhand, the two versions are not interchangeable.

After the Moogerfooger line

Moog discontinued the Moogerfooger range in 2018, and the MuRF went with it2. It has not been reissued as hardware: the pedal has since been digitized as a VST plugin2. For players who want the original hardware, the secondhand market is the only route, where the MuRF fetches over $1,0002.

If animated filtering is what you are after more broadly, the MuRF sits within the wider world of filter pedals, and its MIDI side connects it to the territory covered by MIDI pedals. The related Moogerfooger models include the MF-101 Lowpass Filter, and the two MuRF versions have their own pages at the MF-105 MuRF and the MIDI MuRF.

Questions

What does MuRF stand for?

MuRF stands for Multiple Resonance Filter Array. The pedal runs your signal through an array of eight resonant band-pass filters, and a pattern sequencer triggers volume envelopes across those filters in sequence. The result is animated, moving filter effects, from subtle tremolo-like filtering to pulsing, sequenced sounds that evolve over time.

Is the Moog MuRF still made?

No. The original MuRF launched in 2004, and Moog discontinued the entire Moogerfooger analogue effects range in 2018 after 20 years of production. Used MuRF pedals now fetch over $1,000 on the secondhand market, and the design has since been digitized as a VST plugin. Behringer also released a budget version, the BM-15M Murf Box, in 2025.

What is the difference between the MuRF and the MIDI MuRF?

The original MF-105 MuRF offers eight sliders controlling its resonant filters plus an Envelope knob that shapes each pattern's modulation. The MF-105M MIDI MuRF, launched in 2009, combines the classic MuRF and Bass MuRF into one unit with a switch to change filter ranges between mids and bass, adds MIDI implementation, and supports up to 64-step patterns with a free Mac/PC sequence editor.
