The NUX NDD-7 Tape Echo is a stereo digital delay pedal from NUX that models the classic Roland Space Echo, the Japanese-made tape echo machine from 1974. Where the original moved tape through a chamber with a capstan drive and no reels of any kind, the NDD-7 recreates that behavior digitally, using NUX's Core-Image technology to capture the characteristics of analog tape echo machines along with a natural spring reverb sound12.

It is a delay unit with tape echo modeling and reverb, plus modern features the original never had: tap tempo up to 1600ms, a 40-second stereo looper, MIDI, an OLED display and USB13. Delicious Audio described it as "a stereo, digital, stylized yet expanded clone of the classic Roland Space Echo," all packed in a semi-compact, dual-footswitch stompbox enclosure1. It expands on the theme NUX established with its earlier Tape Core Deluxe4.

A digital tribute to the Roland Space Echo

Tape echo machines like the Roland Space Echo and the Maestro Echoplex defined the echo sound of the 1960s and 1970s, and the Space Echo remains the reference point for this style of delay5. The original Space Echo design used no reels of any kind; the tape was transported via a capstan drive through a tape chamber, with multiple repro-tape heads that could be combined for different echo patterns1.

The NDD-7 takes that architecture and models it digitally. Delicious Audio describes the result as "lush echoes combining warm and organic delay with natural spring reverb," with the spring reverb bringing what the site calls psychedelic slapback and ambience1. There are seven modes based on different tape head combinations, plus a reverb-only mode, and a rotary Select switch circles through the repro-tape head combinations just as the original machine's mode selector did14.

The pedal was announced in February 2022, days after Boss confirmed its own compact Space Echo reissue, and was expected to be released by the end of July that year2. At the time of the announcement, UK dealers were listing it for around GBP 1422.

The controls

The front panel carries the essential knobs of the original Space Echo, with modern names in parentheses31:

ControlWhat it does
REPEAT RATE (TIME)Sets the delay time
INTENSITY (REPEAT)Sets the number of repeats; can push the pedal into wild self-oscillation
ECHO VOLUME (LEVEL)Sets the echo level
REVERB VOLUME (REVERB)Sets the spring reverb volume
BASSEQ for the low end of the repeats
TREBLEEQ for the high end of the repeats
SELECTRotary switch for the delay mode and tape head combination

134

Holding down the Select knob opens an Alt Tweaking mode with secondary controls for the physical character of the modeled tape: Saturation, Wow and Flutter, plus Kill Dry, expression pedal assignment and FB Engage134. FB Engage sends the unit into self-oscillating mode when you hold down the On/Bypass footswitch, a trick MusicRadar flagged as particularly useful for ambient swells4. An expression pedal can be assigned to control Time, Repeat or Level3.

The OLED display can show settings in milliseconds or in beats per minute, and the two footswitches handle On/Bypass and Tap Tempo, with the right switch also covering subdivision duties13.

Looper, MIDI and connections

Pressing both footswitches at once engages Looper mode, also called SOS (sound on sound) mode, which turns the unit into a 40-second stereo looper with record, play and overdub13. During loop playback you can press ON and TAP together to quit SOS mode while the loop keeps playing1. MusicRadar noted that this SOS mode "really differentiates the NDD-7" among Space Echo tributes4.

For larger rigs, the pedal offers MIDI In and Out on 3.5mm jacks, with TRS/MIDI adaptors and 1/8 inch cables supplied, and MIDI settings are assignable through an editor13. Rounding out the connections are stereo 1/4" outputs and USB4.

The NDD-7 draws 300mA at 9V DC4, which is well beyond what a standard 9V battery or a low-current daisy chain output can supply. Plan on an isolated or high-current power supply.

What reviewers said

Guitar World included the pedal in its best tape echo pedals roundup, summing it up as an impressive spec sheet for the price, though not the easiest to navigate6. Pedal of the Day highlighted the self-oscillation behavior: "Crank up the Repeat knob and listen to the Tape Echo go into wild self-oscillation"3.

Questions

How long is the looper on the NUX NDD-7?

The built-in looper, called SOS mode, records a 40-second stereo phrase loop. You enter it by pressing both footswitches at once, and while a loop is playing you can press ON and TAP together to quit looper mode while the loop keeps playing. The OLED display shows looper status.

Does the NUX Tape Echo have MIDI?

Yes. The NDD-7 has MIDI In and Out on 3.5mm jacks, with TRS/MIDI adaptors and 1/8 inch cables supplied. MIDI settings are assignable through the pedal's editor software, so it can sit in a larger MIDI-controlled rig.

What is the max delay time on the NDD-7?

Using the Tap Tempo footswitch, the longest delay time reaches 1600ms, in stereo. The OLED display can show delay settings in milliseconds or in beats per minute.

Is the NUX NDD-7 analog or digital?

It is digital. NUX uses its Core-Image technology to capture the characteristics of analog tape echo machines and the sound of a natural spring reverb, running at a 48 kHz sampling rate with 32 bit A/D converters.

Does the NDD-7 have spring reverb?

Yes. The pedal combines its tape echo delay with a natural spring reverb, described as bringing psychedelic slapback and ambience, and there is a dedicated Reverb knob for reverb volume. A reverb-only mode is also available.
