The MIDI Captain DUO is a two-switch MIDI foot controller from PaintAudio, built around the idea of multi-state cycling: each of its two programmable switches can send single or multiple MIDI commands every time it is pressed, and the switch functions are configured over a USB connection. PaintAudio equips it with USB-MIDI, which lets it control DAW software, synthesizers and effects software on a computer, so it works as a compact controller for a laptop rig as well as for MIDI-equipped pedals and rack units. PaintAudio describes the enclosure as a sturdy metal body with a Foot Switch design for durability1.
What the two switches do
Each switch is programmable and can send single or multiple MIDI commands each time it is pressed, with button functions configured via a USB connection to a computer1. The DUO can mix multiple MIDI channels and different command types, including PC (program change), CC (control change) and NOTE commands, on a single switch press1. Trigger timings are configurable too: commands can be sent when the switch is pressed, released, held down, or at multiple timings, which opens up triggering options beyond a simple press-and-release footswitch1.
Normal Mode and Geek Mode
The DUO carries predefined configurations for four completely different button functions, switched using the MODE switches1. On top of that, the controller runs in two depths of programming:

Geek Mode is where the more advanced customization lives, and where the LED color palette widens to those 22 colors1. The same Normal Mode and Geek Mode split appears across the MIDI Captain range: on the MIDI Captain MINI 6, for example, Geek mode is entered at power-on by holding a key while the device boots, and the choice is saved and remembered2.
Power
PaintAudio lists multiple power supply methods for the DUO: it can be powered via a USB cable or with a standard pedal power adapter1. For a player, that means the same cable that carries USB-MIDI to a computer can also power the unit, or it can sit on a pedalboard and run from a standard adapter alongside the pedals.
STD, blue and gold versions
PaintAudio sells the DUO in a black STD version and in blue and gold versions, and the differences are worth knowing before choosing13:
- The blue and gold versions only differ in color from each other. PaintAudio considers them the Pro versions, though they carry no specific markings1.
- The black STD version has a different surface material: it is not anodized but spray-coated, which PaintAudio says gives it a more simple appearance1.
- Functionally, the STD version does not have a built-in wireless module and cannot be paired with the MIDI Mate for wireless control1.
The same arrangement applies across the family: on the MIDI Captain ONE, a single-switch controller in the same range, PaintAudio describes the black STD version's lack of the wireless module as the main and only functional difference compared with the blue and gold Pro versions3.
If wireless control with the MIDI Mate matters to a rig, the STD version is not the one for it: PaintAudio states plainly that the STD version cannot be paired with the MIDI Mate1.
