The RJM Music Overture is a programmable overdrive pedal that packs six overdrive modes into one box, four based on classic pedals and two designed in house by RJM Music1. Announced in February 2021 as RJM Music Technology's first guitar effects pedal2, it keeps a fully analog signal path while adding preset storage, MIDI control, and USB-C connectivity3. The maker's page currently lists it as sold out1.

A pre-boost circuit can be switched in ahead of any of the overdrive modes, adding up to 12dB of gain at the input, and the incoming 9 volt supply is boosted internally to 18 volts, which RJM says makes the pedal very dynamic and "big" sounding1.

Six overdrive modes with a switchable pre-boost

The six modes are Clean Boost, Classic, Boutique, Versatile, Smooth, and Crunch4. Clean Boost and Crunch use circuit designs by RJM Music itself, while Classic, Boutique, Versatile, and Smooth are based on classic and often-cloned pedals3. MusicPlayers.com's reviewer, Bruce Sokolovic, noted that two of the modes are RJM originals and the other four are based on classic designs4.

BoutiqueBased on a classic, often-cloned pedal3
VersatileBased on a classic, often-cloned pedal3
SmoothBased on a classic, often-cloned pedal3

The pre-boost sits ahead of whichever mode you choose, so it pushes the input of the overdrive circuit rather than acting as a separate boost stage after it1. Sokolovic also observed that the pedal is inspired by classic overdrive, which by design leaks a little clean signal through the overdrive4.

The controls and presets

The onboard knobs are Volume, Gain, Bass, and Treble, plus a control for the level of the pre-boost3. All of the overdrive modes are attenuated with the Gain, Volume, Bass, and Treble knobs, although the Bass knob is not available in every mode by design4.

There are two footswitches: one engages or bypasses the effect, and the other engages the Solo presets; pressing both together saves your settings2. On later builds, RJM re-labeled the Solo button as "Bank," and informed MusicPlayers.com that these later builds also have slightly less clean bleed-through4.

Preset navigation works like this, as described by Premier Guitar's reviewer5:

  1. Press the on/off and solo buttons simultaneously to scroll through presets 1 through 4.
  2. Press the solo button again to select the bank holding presets 5 through 8.
  3. Scroll that bank with the same two buttons.

The bank switch effectively lets you switch between two presets in the two different banks5. Using only the pedal, you can save eight presets across two banks4.

The Overture requires a 9V DC power supply with at least 150mA of current capacity, which is not included with the pedal. There is no battery option1.

MIDI and expression control

Connecting a MIDI foot controller expands the number of available presets from 8 to 10013. The pedal's MIDI functionality also allows parameter control from an external controller5, and it connects over USB-C as well5.

There is an expression pedal input that can be assigned to any of the knob settings2. RJM built in special support for MIDI controllers with expression pedals: you can set up knob positions for heel down and toe down, and the pedal transitions smoothly between them1. MusicPlayers.com points players to RJM's online manual, which thoroughly explains the pedal and includes the important MIDI information4.

What reviewers said

Reviews were mixed but generally found the pedal usable. MusicPlayers.com gave it an overall rating of 3.5 stars4. Premier Guitar's reviewer found real character in the Smooth mode:

"I got rounder, slightly softer transients, but a big buttery sound that was more than a little Dumble-like."5

At Gearnews, Jef wrote on the announcement that the format and functionality reminded him of the Elektron Analog Overdrive pedal, which is larger and works with most signals including synths, and that from the prototype demo he was impressed by the sounds, calling the Overture a decent bet for players needing multiple drive tones without multiple units6. A reader comment argued the sound seemed boring or classic and did not match the promising design, apart from the Boutique mode; Jef replied:

"I don't think the drive tones are boring at all, in fact they all sound useable."6

RJM later built on the same concept with the Full English.

Questions

How many presets can the RJM Overture store without MIDI?

On its own, the Overture stores up to 8 presets, organized across two banks and recalled with the pedal's own footswitches. Connect a MIDI foot controller and the number of available presets expands to 100.

Is the RJM Overture analog?

Yes. The Overture has a fully analog signal path, but the pedal is programmable, so presets and MIDI control are handled digitally around the analog overdrive circuits. Reviewers at MusicPlayers.com described it as an all analog, MIDI programmable overdrive pedal.

Is the RJM Overture still in production?

The Overture was announced in February 2021 as RJM Music Technology's first guitar effects pedal, priced at $399. As of late 2026 the maker's product page lists it as sold out.

What pedals are the RJM Overture modes based on?

It has six modes: Clean Boost, Classic, Boutique, Versatile, Smooth, and Crunch. Clean Boost and Crunch are original RJM Music circuit designs, while the other four are based on classic and often-cloned overdrive pedals.
