The RJM Music Technology Overture is a fully programmable overdrive pedal that packs six classic and modern overdrive tones into one box, with an all-analog signal path and digital control over the settings12. Announced in February 2021 as RJM's first guitar effects pedal, it was priced at $399 and began shipping in March 202134. As of late October 2026, RJM's product page lists it as sold out1.
The idea is simple: instead of carrying a pedalboard full of overdrives, you get six modes in one enclosure, each with its own saved settings, and you switch between them with a footswitch or a MIDI controller. RJM describes it as taking "six great classic and modern overdrive tones" and putting them "all into one fully programmable pedal"1.
Six overdrive modes, clean boost to crunch
The Overture's six modes are Clean Boost, Classic, Boutique, Versatile, Smooth and Crunch5. Four are based on classic pedals and two are brand-new RJM designs1. Guitar World described the range as running "from the delicate, light gains of Clean Boost, all the way to hard-clipping, heavy-rock tones of Crunch"6.
| Mode | Circuit basis | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clean Boost | RJM original design4 | Light, delicate gain6 |
| Classic | TS-based circuit7 | Bass knob inactive, treble works like a TS tone control7 |
| Boutique | Modified TS circuit7 | Bass knob inactive, treble works like a TS tone control7 |
| Versatile | Modified TS circuit7 | Active bass control for more tone-shaping flexibility7 |
| Smooth | Classic-derived design4 | MOSFET clipping circuit for more saturation3 |
| Crunch | RJM original design4 | Hard clipping and aggressive mids3 |
A separate pre-boost circuit can be switched in ahead of any of the overdrive modes, adding up to 12dB of gain at the input1. MusicPlayers.com's reviewer Bruce Sokolovic noted that this 12dB pre-boost is selectable independently of the overdrive options5.
On the sound, Sokolovic found that "the overdrive in Crunch mode was nice and thick, but thanks to that hint of clean there was still a sharp transient poking through," and that using crunch mode with the gain around four "really took any fight the amp had away and just made playing" easier into his Mezzabarba Mzero Overdrive amp5.
Controls and footswitches
The pedal carries knobs for gain, volume, bass, treble and pre-boost7. All of the overdrive modes are attenuated with the gain, volume, bass and treble knobs, though the bass knob is not active in every mode by design5. In classic and boutique modes the bass knob is inactive and the treble knob functions like the single tone control on a Tube Screamer7.
There are only two footswitches: on/off and solo5. On the newest production run the second switch is labeled "bank" instead, and it selects preset banks 1 to 4 when disengaged or 5 to 8 when engaged7. RJM informed MusicPlayers.com that later builds carry the Bank label and also have slightly less clean bleed-through than the review unit5.
Modes are selected with a small internal control rather than a front-panel switch7.
MIDI, presets and expression
Used on its own, the Overture stores eight presets across two banks, recalled with the pedal's footswitches45. Connect a MIDI foot controller and the number of available presets expands to 10014. MIDI I/O sits on the back of the unit alongside the quarter-inch input and output jacks, which MusicPlayers.com called a plus for tight pedalboards5.
One limitation Premier Guitar's reviewer flagged: "To access a specific preset within a bank, you have to scroll through all the presets sequentially in ascending order." There is no direct jump between presets from the pedal itself7.
The expression pedal input can be assigned to any of the knob settings3. RJM also built in special support for MIDI controllers with expression pedals, letting you set knob values for the heel-down and toe-down positions that then transition smoothly between them1. The same MIDI functionality allows parameters to be controlled from an external controller7.
On the learning curve, Premier Guitar's reviewer found that "the programmable aspect of the Overture isn't immediately intuitive and I had to consult the manual to get up and running," though it proved fairly simple once learned7. RJM maintains an online manual that MusicPlayers.com said thoroughly explains the pedal and includes important MIDI information5.
Power
The Overture runs on a standard 9V DC center-negative supply with at least 150mA of current capacity, which is not included12. Internally, the incoming 9 volts is boosted to 18 volts for what RJM says gives the best performance from the circuit1. At 150mA the draw is conservative enough that MusicPlayers.com found it "will be easily powered by any popular pedalboard power supply"5.

Questions
How many presets does the RJM Overture hold?
On its own, the Overture stores eight presets across two banks, recalled with the pedal's footswitches. Connect a MIDI foot controller and the number of available presets expands to 100. Presets within a bank must be scrolled through sequentially rather than jumped to directly.
Can you jump directly between presets on the Overture?
No. To reach a specific preset within a bank you have to scroll through all the presets sequentially in ascending order, as Premier Guitar's reviewer noted. A MIDI foot controller gives access to the full 100-preset set, but the onboard footswitches work through the presets in order.
Is the RJM Overture based on a Tube Screamer?
Partly. Of its six modes, two (Clean Boost and Crunch) are original RJM Music designs. Of the other four, Premier Guitar reported that the classic, boutique and versatile modes are based on TS and modified TS circuits, and the smooth mode is another classic-derived design.
Why is the Solo button labeled Bank on newer Overtures?
RJM re-labeled the second footswitch on later production runs. On the newest builds the switch is called Bank instead of Solo, and it selects preset banks 1 to 4 when disengaged or 5 to 8 when engaged. RJM told MusicPlayers.com that later builds also have slightly less clean bleed-through.
Is the RJM Overture still available?
As of late October 2026, RJM Music's product page lists the Overture as sold out. It was announced in February 2021 at $399 and began shipping in March 2021, and it carried a three-year limited warranty.
