The Roger Mayer Classic Fuzz is a fuzz guitar effect pedal from Roger Mayer, the designer who developed fuzz modifications for Jimi Hendrix that can be heard on Hendrix's early recordings. Mayer describes it as "unquestionably the most accurate 'Vintage fuzz effect'", and the pedal is built around the classic two-transistor Fuzz Face amplifier configuration, using PNP germanium transistors of the same type used in the early versions, carefully selected for gain and stability1.
What it does
The Classic Fuzz is intended to produce what Mayer calls "the rich smooth rounded tones that the later version NPN silicon transistors failed to emulate", in other words the character of the early germanium Fuzz Face units rather than the later silicon ones1. Because Mayer personally developed the modifications used in the circuit, the pedal is presented as "a device designed and built by the man who was there"1.
"The version that we produce today has eliminated all of these problems and is representative of the best units that Jimi"
In practical terms, the pedal replicates the best of the units Hendrix used while doing away with the problems of mass-produced Fuzz Face versions1. One of those problems, temperature sensitivity, is addressed directly: a pre-set has been added on the PC card to enable the unit to be optimized at varying temperatures1. That matters with germanium circuits, which are more sensitive to conditions than silicon designs.
Where it came from
The Classic Fuzz sits in a line of Mayer's own designs. In his own account of the company's history, Mayer explains that the reissue of the Octavia and its success led him to put his version of the Fuzz Face, the Classic Fuzz, into the Rocket enclosure2. The pedal carries the same modifications Mayer developed for Hendrix himself1.
Players looking at related designs from the same maker include the Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz, the Roger Mayer Stone Fuzz, the Roger Mayer Page 1, and the Roger Mayer Octavia Classic, a fuzz pedal with an added tone control section3.
