The Roger Mayer Octavia Classic is an octave-up fuzz: a pedal that produces a sound an octave higher than the note you are presently playing, layered over fuzz character. Roger Mayer's product page describes the doubling as accomplished through electronic mirror imaging techniques that are program sensitive, which is why the effect responds differently to where you play on the neck and how hard you dig in1. It is a variation of Mayer's Octavia, the circuit Premier Guitar has called seminal, designed by the British pedal pioneer Roger Mayer2.

What it is and how it differs from the rocket-shaped Octavia

The Classic is a variant of the Rocket Shape Octavia. Roger Mayer says it "has all the same famous tones of the Rocket Shape Octavia with an added tone control section"5. Delicious Audio's Griffin Jennings, in a buying guide to Octavia fuzzes, agreed on the sound: "The sound is the same as its rocket sibling, but it features a more compact case"4.

The differences, then, are practical rather than tonal. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio lists them as a more compact case, a Tone knob placed between the drive and the octave stages for extra flexibility, and a true hard wire output plus two buffered outputs that can drive long cable lengths with no high frequency loss6.

"The current range of, say, the Vision Octavias are much more expressive than the old ones."
Roger Mayer, in a Premier Guitar interview7

That quote concerns the Vision line rather than the Classic specifically, but it reflects Mayer's own view that his later Octavia designs moved beyond the early circuits7.

Controls and outputs

The Classic keeps the Octavia's drive and octave stages and adds a Tone control. Mayer says the added tone control section "makes the pedal even more versatile"5, and Delicious Audio locates it between the drive and octave stages, so it shapes the fuzz before the octave doubling4.

On the output side, the pedal offers a hard wire output and dual buffered outputs3. The buffered outputs matter on a stage: as Delicious Audio notes, they can drive long cable lengths with no high frequency loss6, so a player can feed an amp directly and send a second buffered feed down a long run without dulling the top end.

The Classic's smaller enclosure and dual buffered outputs differ from the rocket-shaped original. If you are matching an older board layout or a specific vintage signal path, the output arrangement is not the same.

Size and pedalboard fit

Mayer's news page describes the Classic as coming in his "new smaller standard enclosure with Hard wire and Dual buffered outputs in a package that is more flexible"3, and his product page repeats the pedal board friendly framing5. For a player squeezing an octave fuzz onto a crowded board, the compact case is the headline change from the rocket format4.

Where the Octavia came from

The Octavia's history runs back through Mayer's work with Hendrix. JHS Pedals' history of Hendrix's technology notes that Roger Mayer said the first prototype unit was weak, and advised Jimi to use a fuzz with it; later versions of the Octavia had the fuzz effect built in8. In a Guitar Player interview, Jimmy Page was described as less interested in what he called Mayer's "other box," an octave-doubler with fuzz9. The Classic is the current, compacted expression of that lineage5.

Who has used it

Guitar World's rig tour with Live's Chad Taylor documents his use of the Octavia Classic, which he said "is used heavily on Dolphin's Cry"10. In the same piece, Taylor described his Roger Mayer effects as gain stage pedals that only go up to the amp heads10.

Questions

Does the Roger Mayer Octavia Classic sound the same as the rocket-shaped Octavia?

Roger Mayer says the Octavia Classic has all the same famous tones of the Rocket Shape Octavia, with an added tone control section. Delicious Audio's Griffin Jennings put it the same way: the sound is the same as its rocket sibling, but it features a more compact case. The differences are the smaller enclosure, the Tone knob and the output arrangement, not the core circuit's character.

What does the Tone knob do on the Octavia Classic?

The Tone knob is the Classic's main addition over the rocket-shaped Octavia. Delicious Audio describes it as a Tone knob placed between the drive and the octave stages for extra flexibility, and Roger Mayer says the added tone control section makes the pedal even more versatile.

What are the dual buffered outputs on the Octavia Classic for?

The Classic carries a true hard wire output plus two buffered outputs. According to Delicious Audio, the buffered outputs can drive long cable lengths with no high frequency loss, so a player can send the signal to an amp and a second destination, such as a tuner or a long stage run, without losing top end.

Is the Octavia Classic small enough for a crowded pedalboard?

Yes. Roger Mayer says it comes in his new smaller standard enclosure and describes the package as pedal board friendly and more flexible than the original format. Delicious Audio likewise notes it features a more compact case than the rocket-shaped version.

Who has used the Roger Mayer Octavia Classic?

Guitar World's rig rundown with Live guitarist Chad Taylor documents his use of the Octavia Classic, which he said is used heavily on Live's "Dolphin's Cry". In that rundown he described his Roger Mayer effects as gain stage pedals that only go up to the amp heads.
