The Silktone Fuzz is a germanium fuzz pedal from Silktone, a California-based effects and amp company whose first pedal creation is simply named Fuzz1. At its heart are two germanium transistors in the classic Fuzz Face / Tone Bender Mk1.5 topology, and Delicious Audio describes it as "a Germanium Fuzz Face-inspired circuit with a couple of cool tricks up its sleeve to widen the original's sonic palette"1. It first arrived in 20222, and in 2024 Silktone released an updated version, the Fuzz+2.
The trick that sets it apart is the Active Bias Monitor: an LED readout paired with a Bias knob that lets you see and precisely set the bias point of the two germanium transistors1. Germanium fuzzes are notorious for drifting out of bias as temperature changes; here you can read the bias on the screen and correct it with the knob instead of guessing.
The Active Bias Monitor and temperature
Germanium transistors are temperature sensitive, which is why vintage-style germanium fuzzes can sound different from one gig to the next. The Fuzz's answer is the Bias knob, which Delicious Audio calls the pedal's most unusual control, allowing the player to precisely set the bias point of the two germanium transistors with the reading shown on the Active Bias Monitor1. The point, as Delicious Audio puts it, is "dialing in your favorite fuzz tone easier than ever without being plagued by the inconsistent bias shifting" of temperature sensitive germanium pedals1.
Premier Guitar tested this directly. In a 66-degree basement studio, the LED readout showed 6.00 with the bias knob at noon7. After 10 minutes in 84-degree sunlight, the same knob position measured 8.25 and the tones "sounded much more gated and jagged"7. Dialing bias counterclockwise to roughly 8 o'clock brought the reading back to essentially the original value, and the reviewer concluded that the bias control and monitor reliably compensate for temperature changes, verified with hot and cold tests7.
The bias position also works as a range of fuzz voices. Premier Guitar found that bias near minimum imparts lo-fi, Velcro-esque stickiness, ranging from thick Fuzz Factory-like sounds to Fuzzrite tones; near noon it is airier and more open; past noon more rotund; and near maximum it gives "strangled-fuzz" vibes7. Delicious Audio lists gated bias settings around ~1.10v on the monitor1.
The controls
The original Fuzz carries four knobs and a toggle18:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bias | Sets the bias point of the two germanium transistors, shown on the Active Bias Monitor1 |
| Fuzz | Changes transistor gain; rolled back it offers clean boost and drive tones1 |
| Cleanup | Rolled down is normal fuzz operation; turning it up lowers input level, cleaning up the tone for overdrive or clean boost, like your guitar's volume knob but useful for presetting or when the pedal sits late in the chain1 |
| Volume | Changes output volume; the more you cut it, the more highs roll off to soften the tone1 |
| Classic/Raw toggle | Changes the bias ratio and bass filtering, from traditional Fuzz Face settings to a boosted setting with no bass filter for fatter tones1 |
Placement in your chain
A long-standing issue with germanium Fuzz Face-style circuits is that they misbehave after buffers or other pedals. The Fuzz includes an input debuffer, which Silktone designed so the fuzz can be placed anywhere in your chain without the normal issues1. For players who build pedalboards around buffer pedals or run long signal chains, that is a practical difference from a vintage-style fuzz that wants to be first in line and fed directly by the guitar.
Where it came from
Silktone launched the Fuzz in February 2022 as a Tone Bender Mk1.5-style germanium fuzz with a patent-pending Active Bias Monitor, built to the design brief of "simplified versatility"4. Gearnews described it as "a Tone Bender Mk1.5 on steroids, no heat issues here" and reported that the first batch had sold out, with a second expected around the middle of March 20228. Guitar Pedal X later characterized it as having "upgraded the Germanium Fuzz Face in several ways, giving it more range / variability and flexibility"9.
The 2024 Fuzz+ update
In October 2024 Silktone unveiled the Fuzz+, an updated version of the 2022 pedal2. The update adds pre-fuzz Treble Shape and Bass Shape controls, a second footswitch that engages RAW mode (bypassing the tone and cleanup controls for full fuzz), a smoother Cleanup taper, higher output volume, and standard 9V power requirements12. Guitar Pedal X's review of the Fuzz+ Edition lists the full control set as Volume, Fuzz, Cleanup / Impedance, Treble Shape, Bass Shape, Bias adjust, Raw Mode, and Bypass, while retaining the external Bias adjust, LED Bias Screen, and what the reviewer calls the richly detailed harmonic germanium sound3.
"Silktone's Fuzz+ Edition improves the original Germanium Fuzz Face Style Fuzz with Treble Shape and Bass Shape controls."

Questions
Does the Silktone Fuzz take a battery?
No. The original Silktone Fuzz is powered by a 9-volt power supply only, with no battery option. The 2024 Fuzz+ update moved to standard 9V power requirements, accepting any 9V DC source, so a normal pedalboard supply works.
Can the Silktone Fuzz go after a buffer or other pedals?
Yes. The pedal includes an input debuffer, which Silktone designed so the fuzz can be placed anywhere in your chain without the problems germanium fuzzes normally have after buffers or other pedals.
Is the Silktone Fuzz true bypass?
Yes. The Silktone Fuzz is true bypass, as listed in the guitar.com review's feature set alongside the Active Bias Monitor display and 9-volt power supply operation.
How does temperature affect the Silktone Fuzz?
Germanium transistors shift bias as temperature changes, but the Active Bias Monitor lets you see and correct it. In Premier Guitar's testing, the same bias-knob position read 6.00 at 66 degrees and 8.25 after 10 minutes in 84-degree sunlight, and turning bias counterclockwise brought the reading back to match the original tone.
Where is the Silktone Fuzz made?
The Silktone Fuzz is made in the USA by Silktone, a California-based effects pedal and amp company. The Fuzz was the company's first pedal creation.
