The Subdecay Harmonic Antagonizer is a fuzz, oscillator and noise making machine from the Oregon pedal maker Subdecay, launched in May 2015. Subdecay describes it as not a traditional fuzz box: it combines a triggered oscillator, square wave fuzz and a VCA, and the company's own product page calls it "a cold heartless sonic butcher."12 It shares some characteristics with the earlier Subdecay NoiseBox, which the company retired in 2012.1

What it does

The core of the pedal is a triggered oscillator: it turns on whenever it senses an input signal.1 That makes it an effect that reacts to playing dynamics rather than simply sitting on top of the signal, and it is why the pedal works with sources beyond guitar. Subdecay lists it for use with electric guitar, bass, drum machines, groove boxes or just about anything that will make a sound.1

The company has also placed it among its synth-adjacent designs. In a Subdecay buying guide, Brian Marshall grouped it with the Vitruvian Mod alongside the company's outright synth pedals, the Octasynth, M3, Octave Theory and PixelWave.4

The controls: Sustain, Blend, Freq., Sense and Volume

The pedal has five knobs. Guitar Pedal X listed the full control set as "Frequency, Sense, Volume, Blend, Sustain."5

ControlWhat it does
BlendSets the mix of fuzz and oscillator circuits. Turn to the left for square wave fuzz, right for more oscillator.1
SenseEnvelope control of the oscillator. Turned to the right, higher input drives the oscillator into higher frequencies.1
SustainSet higher for longer sustain. Subdecay notes this is not a distortion or fuzz control: the effect is always distorted, fuzzy and squared, and sound fades out as notes decay.1
Freq.Frequency control of the oscillator.5
VolumeSets the overall output level.1

The Sustain control is worth understanding before dialing in a sound. Because the circuit is always squared and fuzzy, Sustain shapes how long a note holds before fading out, not how much grit there is.1

Where it came from

Subdecay announced the Harmonic Antagonizer as available in May 2015.2 The company, which has been designing and building pedals since it released the first Quasar phaser in 2005,6 is run by Brian Marshall, who describes himself on the Subdecay site as "founder of Subdecay, effects designer, janitor and whatever needs to get done do-er."2

The design brief was deliberately left field. As Subdecay puts it: "The original idea was to make something the Flaming Lips or Nine Inch Nails would use."1

B-Stock

Subdecay has also sold the pedal as a B-Stock item, listed as a blemished product at $135.00 USD against the standard $169.00.31 The terms are worth knowing before ordering:

  • Blemished pedals are fully functional and include the standard 3 year warranty.3
  • All blemished pedal sales are final.3

What reviewers said

Writing in a 2024 Guitar Pedal X buying guide on oscillating fuzzes, Stefan Karlsson described the pedal as "A somewhat extended range OscilloFuzz in many ways," noting that it "has featured a lot on this site over the years" and calling it well-loved and still going strong overall.5

Questions

Is the Subdecay Harmonic Antagonizer a regular fuzz pedal?

No. Subdecay describes it as not a traditional fuzz box: it combines a triggered oscillator with square wave fuzz and a VCA. The Blend knob sets the mix between the fuzz and oscillator circuits, turned left for square wave fuzz and right for more oscillator. The effect is always distorted, fuzzy and squared, with sound fading out as notes decay.

What does the Sense knob do on the Harmonic Antagonizer?

Sense is an envelope control of the oscillator. Turned to the right, a higher input drives the oscillator into higher frequencies. It works together with the triggered oscillator, which turns on whenever it senses an input signal, so picking harder or feeding a louder signal changes how the oscillator behaves.

Who designed the Subdecay Harmonic Antagonizer?

Brian Marshall, the founder of Subdecay, who describes himself on the company's site as an effects designer. The original idea behind the pedal, according to Subdecay, was to make something the Flaming Lips or Nine Inch Nails would use.

Can the Harmonic Antagonizer be used with synths or drum machines?

Yes. Subdecay lists it for use with electric guitar, bass, drum machines, groove boxes or just about anything that will make a sound. Because the oscillator is triggered by an input signal, it responds to whatever source feeds it.

What is a B-Stock Subdecay pedal?

A B-Stock pedal from Subdecay is a blemished item sold at a lower price. Blemished pedals are fully functional and include the standard 3 year warranty, but all blemished pedal sales are final, so they cannot be returned.

What is the Subdecay NoiseBox?

The NoiseBox was an earlier Subdecay pedal that the company retired in 2012. Subdecay says the Harmonic Antagonizer shares some characteristics with it, making the NoiseBox part of the Antagonizer's circuit lineage.
