The SubDecay Noise Box is an envelope sensitive harmonic frequency generator pedal from Subdecay. Underneath the noise-making side sits a fuzz tone with what Premier Guitar described as "some nicely subtle octave effects," and on top of that runs a frequency generator that reacts to your playing. It belongs to the wider family of fuzz pedals, but it is built as much for strange, synth-like sounds as for straight fuzz1.
What it does
The pedal stacks two things in one box. The base layer is a fuzz tone, and the octave effects on it are subtle rather than the aggressive octave jump some fuzzes produce. On top sits the Frequency G, the generator part of the pedal, which produces tones that respond to how hard you play1.
Premier Guitar's reviewer found a wide range of sounds in it:
"I was able to dial in a diverse array of tones with the Noise Box."
Those tones ran, in the reviewer's words, from "cool octave fuzz to crazy synth-like, 8-bit video game madness"1. Players looking for that kind of territory in a current Subdecay pedal may also come across the Subdecay Noise Theory, a later multi-fuzz design from the same maker.
Controls and power
The control the review details is the Level knob, which sets your overall volume1. Power comes from a 9V battery inside the pedal, and the reviewer noted a practical drawback: "the 9V battery inside the pedal isn't the most secure"1. That is worth knowing if you plan to gig with one, since a loose battery can mean an interrupted show.
