Surfy Bear Compact Reverb

The Surfy Bear Compact Reverb is an analog spring reverb pedal from Surfy Industries, and it is a true spring unit: there is a real spring reverb pan inside the enclosure, not a digital simulation of one. Premier Guitar describes it as an analog spring reverb unit with real springs that "replicates the tank reverb units of the 1960s in a pedalboard-friendly housing"¹. It is part of Surfy Industries' range of spring reverb units¹, which also includes the Surfybear Compact Deluxe, a version that adds tremolo.

What it does and where it comes from

The Compact's circuit follows the same specifications as the Fender 6G15, the standalone reverb unit Fender sold in the early 1960s, with the tubes replaced by JFET transistor technology²¹. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio, writing about the Deluxe's reverb section, describes that design as based on "a 1962 Fender 6G15 reverb unit, replacing the tubes with JFET transistor technology"⁴. Pedal of the Day puts it the same way: "The SurfyBear Compact is based on the original Fender 6G15 Reverb Tank, with a couple of added bonus features"⁵.

Because the springs are real, the pedal behaves like a vintage tank reverb: Delicious Audio says it "recreates the classic reverb sound of the vintage amps from the '60s"⁶. For a player, that means the drip and decay of a genuine spring pan rather than an algorithm, in a format that fits a pedalboard.

Controls

Guitar Pedal X lists the control set as "Volume, Mixer 1, Mixer 2, Tone, Decay, Dwell, Mixer : 1-2, Bypass"³.

The dual mixer control is the standout feature: it lets you switch between two reverb settings at the press of the mixer switch, a "bonus feature" beyond the original 6G15 design⁵⁶.

Size and price

Guitar Pedal X listed the Compact at $350 in its December 2024 comparison of true spring tank reverb pedals³. The same reviewer flagged the footprint as the main practical consideration: "By far the largest here at 250mm wide"³, and "For my preferences the Surfy Bear Compact is just too large - I would need to sacrifice too many slots in order to accommodate that size and pedalboard fit"³. A real spring pan takes physical space, so the Compact asks for more board real estate than a typical reverb pedal.

What reviewers said

• Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson called it "A fantastic sounding proper surf rock style reverb with a full complement of surface controls, and switchable Mixer Options"³.
• Pedal of the Day's reviewer found the tone convincing: "Organic reverb tone simply oozes out here"⁵, and concluded that "This true spring reverb has a wonderful control section, authentic sound and a stylish, well-built enclosure"⁵.
• The same review summed up: "The sleek look and high-quality design round everything out, making this a spring reverb that can go against the best out there"⁵.

The Compact and the Compact Deluxe

The Surfybear Compact is the largest reverb unit in this comparison, measuring 250mm wide³. Its control set runs to Volume, Mixer 1, Mixer 2, Tone, Decay, Dwell, a Mixer 1-2 switch and Bypass³. It lists for $350 USD³. If you want the Compact's spring reverb with tremolo on board, the Deluxe is the version to look at; the original Compact remains the simpler two-mixer spring unit. For some players the size is the deciding factor: the reviewer found that "For my preferences the Surfy Bear Compact is just too large - I would need to sacrifice too many slots in order to accommodate that size" on their pedalboard³.
