The TC Electronic PolyTune 3 Mini is a tuner pedal in a mini enclosure, made by TC Electronic. Its headline trick is polyphonic tuning: strum all your open strings at once and the display shows which of them are out of tune, so you can fix the offenders without checking each string one by one. Alongside that it carries the full PolyTune 3 feature set, including chromatic and strobe modes and a built-in BonaFide buffer with switchable true bypass12.
TC Electronic announced the PolyTune 3 Mini in April 2019 alongside the PolyTune 3 Noir, as two compact variants of its Polytune tuner line3. Guitar World describes the Mini as taking its cues from the earlier PolyTune Mini, now with the 3-series feature set squeezed into the smaller box2.
What the PolyTune 3 Mini does
The Mini covers the three tuning modes of the full-size PolyTune 3. Polyphonic mode tunes all strings at once from a single strum. Chromatic mode tunes one string at a time to any note. Strobe mode is the precision option, with a rotating-style display for the final touch of accuracy1.
What sets the 3-series apart from earlier PolyTunes is the built-in BonaFide buffer. A buffer keeps your signal strong over long cable runs and pedal chains; with the buffer switched off, the pedal passes signal in true bypass. MusicRadar notes a pair of external DIP switches that select between true bypass, the BonaFide buffer, and a buffered setting with the screen always on1. That always-on option means the display stays visible without the pedal interrupting your signal.
The enclosure is solid metal, which MusicRadar's reviewer said put any worries about the affordable price to bed1.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Footswitch | Turns the tuner on and off; hold it down to toggle between standard and drop-D tuning2 |
| Side button | Switches between standard, dropped and capo tuning modes1 |
| DIP switches | Select true bypass, BonaFide buffer, or buffered with the screen always on1 |
The side button is new compared with the previous PolyTune Mini: Guitar World notes an extra button was added to switch between tuning modes, including standard, dropped tunings and capo modes2.
Tuning modes and accuracy
| Mode | Accuracy | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Polyphonic | Not stated separately | Shows all six strings at once for a quick check1 |
| Chromatic | 0.5 cents | Tunes one string at a time, any note12 |
| Strobe | 0.02 cents | Fine tuning at the highest accuracy the pedal offers12 |
A cent is one hundredth of a semitone, so 0.02 cents in strobe mode is far finer than most ears can detect. Guitar World calls the chromatic mode's 0.5 cents accurate and the strobe mode's 0.02 cents "a hair-splitting" figure2. Reviewing the full-size PolyTune 3, MusicRadar found the strobe mode's precision "a total godsend in recording and live situations"6.
The Mini works with electric, electro-acoustic and bass guitars, according to both MusicRadar and Guitar World12, so bass players can use the polyphonic strum-check as well.
MusicRadar's overall verdict on the Mini was positive:
"The TC Electronic PolyTune 3 Mini is their best guitar tuner yet, and for the money there are few tuners on the market with the same set of features"1
