The Thorn Soundlabs Black Swamp Flex Fuzz is a fully analog fuzz pedal made in Nashville, announced in December 20251. Rather than one fixed fuzz voice, it is a multi-fuzz: Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson describes it as "a versatile Multi-Fuzz covering Fuzz Face, Tone Bender and Big Muff territory"2. It does that through an unusually deep control panel, seven knobs and two toggle switches, that reshapes the fuzz from tight and dark through to raw and searing.

The controls: seven knobs and two switches

Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio says the pedal's philosophy is embodied in "its comprehensive seven knob control panel, which extends far beyond standard Gain, Volume, and Tone"1. Guitar World's Trevor Curwen lists the full set: Gain, Damping, Mid Freq, Volume, Bass, Mid, Treble, the Character S/N/H switch, the Hard Clip O/I switch and the bypass footswitch3.

ControlWhat it does
GainFuzz drive amount2
DampingInput filter controlling how much low end reaches the distortion circuit, for foundational tightening1
Mid FreqSweeps the center of the midrange boost or cut1
VolumeOutput level2
Bass, Mid, TrebleThree-band EQ2
Character switchSelects Smooth, Normal or Hot clipping responses1
Hard Clip switchToggles between soft and aggressive asymmetric clipping1

Karlsson sums up the tone-shaping ability as "combining 3-Band EQ with semi-parametric mids and a Damping control," with the two toggles on top2. The Damping control is worth understanding before you dial anything in: Delicious Audio describes it as "a specialized input filter that dictates how much low end reaches the distortion circuit," which is what lets the pedal tighten up where a conventional fuzz would stay flubby1.

Voicings: Big Muff, Tone Bender and beyond

The two switches do most of the character work. Karlsson writes that "Hard Clip tightens and darkens for Big Muff styles, while Smooth, Natural and Hot! offer variations"2. Curwen frames it the same way: "With a choice of Smooth, Normal or Hot for the fuzz character, as well as the options of soft or hard clipping"3.

Delicious Audio describes the pedal's range as able to be "tuned for articulate, amp-like drive that stacks seamlessly or pushed into raw, searing territory, all while maintaining the organic, responsive feel of a pure analog signal path"1. That puts it in conversation with overdrive pedals and distortion pedals as much as with other fuzz pedals: with the Damping and EQ set moderately, it can sit closer to an amp-like drive than to a splattery vintage fuzz.

Karlsson's own preferred settings, which he describes as "sort of Tone Bender adjacent," give a starting point2:

  • Gain at noon
  • Damping at 9 o'clock
  • Mid Freq at 3 o'clock
  • Volume at 3 o'clock
  • Character: Smooth
  • Hard Clip: off
  • Bass at 3 o'clock, Mid at 3 o'clock, Treble at max2

What reviewers found

Karlsson's April 2026 review praises the pedal's versatility and tone shaping, but he flags one limitation that matters to players who clean up from the guitar's volume knob: "It delivers substantial volume, but clipped sound remains when guitar volume is reduced, so it does not approach Germanium Fuzz Face cleanup"2. In other words, rolling back the guitar volume tames the pedal, but it does not go fully clean the way a germanium Fuzz Face style circuit can.

Curwen's Guitar World review, part of a round-up of Thorn Soundlabs' Freq series, types it simply as a fuzz pedal at $1993.

Price and availability

Guitar Pedal X reported in April 2026 that "The Black Swamp Flex Fuzz retails for $199 typically (190 euros / 166 pounds)"2. Guitar World's review lists the same dollar figure, $1993. Karlsson notes it is "available direct from Thorn Soundlabs, and at select international dealers, including in UK and Europe"2.
