The Universal Audio UAFX Evermore Studio Reverb is a compact stompbox that puts the sound of the Lexicon 224, the iconic late-'70s early-digital studio reverb rack, on a pedalboard. Delicious Audio describes it as delivering "the grainy ambient tails and mesmerizing modulations of the iconic late-'70s early-digital device" in "a compact, elegantly crafted stompbox"1. It was unveiled in September 2023 as one of four effects in Universal Audio's Compacts series, alongside the UAFX Heavenly Plate Reverb, the Orion Tape Echo and the 1176 Studio Compressor12.

A Lexicon 224 in a compact pedal

The Evermore is built on the award-winning Hall 224 algorithms found in Universal Audio's flagship Golden Reverberator1. In GuitarPlayer's review of the UAFX stompbox line, Art Thompson notes that the compact pedals derive primarily from the Starlight Echo Station, Golden Reverberator, Del-Verb Ambience Companion and Max Preamp and Dual Compressor2. In other words, the Evermore carries the hall-reverb side of Universal Audio's larger UAFX pedals into a smaller, cheaper box.

"This is a 3-mode reverb + modulation inspired by the digital racks of the late '70s and early '80s"
Paolo De Gregorio, Delicious Audio3

Gearnews's Stefan Wyeth, in a January 2024 round-up of budget reverbs, describes the pedal as giving "three different settings modelled on the famous Lexicon 224"4.

The controls

The Evermore's control set follows the studio-rack model closely. Delicious Audio describes the pedal as at its core a Room reverb pedal, with three reverb sizes selected through a mode toggle1.

ControlWhat it does
Mode toggleSelects Room, Small Hall, or Large Hall1
MixBlends the effect with the dry signal1
Bass, Mid, TrebleVintage-correct three-band decay lines to sculpt the reflections1
ModulationFixed-speed modulation knob, an extra nod to players who want movement in the tail1
ModAdds lush, grainy "early-digital" textures that add character to the reverbs5
Pre-delay switchTwo pre-delay settings, short and long, on the back case14
Trail switchActivates Trail mode, on the back case1

The Mod control is worth noting for players chasing that early-digital character: gearnews's launch coverage says it "offers lush, grainy 'early-digital' textures, which will add more character to the reverbs"5.

The Trail and pre-delay switches sit on the back case, not the top panel, so set them before mounting the pedal on a board1.

Bypass and price

The Evermore has a switchable true/trails bypass1. True bypass removes the pedal from the chain when off; trails mode lets the reverb tail decay naturally after you disengage the footswitch, which is often the preferred behavior for reverb.

On price, the figures differ by date. At the August 2023 launch, gearnews quoted $218 at Thomann5. By January 2024, Stefan Wyeth's budget reverb guide listed the pedal at $149.00 USD, alongside £136.00 and 159.00€ for UK and European buyers4. The newer figure is the lower one, so the listed price has come down since the Compacts line debuted.

Questions

Does the UAFX Evermore have true bypass?

Yes, but it is switchable. Delicious Audio describes the Evermore Studio Reverb as having a switchable true/trails bypass, set from a switch on the back case. In true bypass the pedal is removed from your signal chain when off; in trails mode the reverb tail keeps ringing after you switch the pedal off, which many players prefer with reverb.

What reverb types does the UAFX Evermore Studio Reverb have?

The Evermore offers three reverb sizes through a mode toggle: Room, Small Hall, and Large Hall. Gearnews describes these as three settings modelled on the famous Lexicon 224 digital reverb, with a modulation control, two pre-delay settings and a three-band EQ to shape the sound.

What is the Trail switch on the Evermore for?

The Trail switch sits on the back case alongside a pre-delay option switch. It controls the bypass behavior: with trails active, the reverb tail continues to decay naturally after you turn the pedal off, rather than cutting off instantly as it does in true bypass.

What is the Evermore Studio Reverb modeled on?

The Evermore is built on the Hall 224 algorithms found in Universal Audio's flagship Golden Reverberator, which model the Lexicon 224, the iconic late-'70s early-digital studio reverb rack. Delicious Audio describes its sound as the grainy ambient tails and mesmerizing modulations of that device.

How much does the UAFX Evermore cost?

Gearnews's January 2024 budget reverb round-up lists the Evermore at $149.00 USD, with UK and European prices of £136.00 and 159.00€. At the pedal's 2023 launch, gearnews quoted $218 at Thomann, so the listed price has come down since release.
