The Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD is an overdrive pedal from Voodoo Lab that packs four overdrive/distortion circuits into one box: Stock, Lead, Rhythm and High Gain, selected with a MOD switch1. It builds on the company's earlier Sparkle Drive, whose overdrive circuit is an exact replica of a vintage '808, and whose signature Clean control blends a boosted clean signal back into the drive23. Premier Guitar has called the Sparkle Drive line Voodoo Lab's flagship overdrive4.
Four overdrive circuits with a clean blend
The core idea of the Sparkle Drive line is the clean blend. Voodoo Lab describes it as using the same concept as layering two amps, one clean and the other saturated2. The overdrive circuit provides the tone of a vintage '808, and the Clean control blends back in a boosted direct signal, which the maker says restores the attack and feel lost in a highly compressed overdrive circuit5. GuitarPlayer's writers described the original Sparkle Drive's clean knob as letting you add boosted clean signal to the distortion sound to enhance clarity and detail5.
The MOD adds the circuit switching on top of that blend. Using the MOD switch, you can select the stock 808-based circuit or instantly pick from three different custom modifications1. Pedal of the Day, reviewing the MOD in November 2023, described it as delivering all the overdrive tones of the original Sparkle Drive "but with a twist," with four drive modes and a wide-ranging control section6.
| Position | Mode | What Voodoo Lab says it does |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage | Stock | Original Sparkle Drive: classic tube-style midrange grind, great for blues or boosting solos |
| MOD 1 | Lead | Extra gain, thick and juicy bottom end, smooth highs for single-note melodies |
| MOD 2 | Rhythm | Punchy "mid cut" rhythm tones for chunky rock power chords and funk |
| MOD 3 | High Gain | Articulate highs and aggressive bottom end |
The controls
The MOD has four knobs plus the MOD switch:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| VOLUME | Sets the output level |
| TONE | Brighter up, darker down; affects the overdrive only, no effect on the clean signal |
| GAIN | Sets gain for the overdrive sound only; low settings warm up and compress, higher settings add sustain and saturation |
| CLEAN | Blends the boosted clean signal with the overdrive; all the way down is overdrive only, all the way up is clean only |
| MOD switch | Selects Vintage, MOD 1, MOD 2 or MOD 3 |
A detail worth knowing: Tone and Gain act only on the overdrive side of the pedal. The clean signal that the Clean knob blends in stays untouched by both, so you can darken or saturate the drive while keeping the blended clean attack intact1.
With the Clean control turned down you get a classic overdrive tone; all the way up, the original Sparkle Drive provides what Voodoo Lab calls a super transparent, 100% clean boost with tons of output23. Pedal of the Day's 2014 review of the original put it simply: "The clean knob works as a blend knob."7
Power and switching
The MOD runs on 9V DC at 35mA, through a 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel connector with center negative polarity1. There is no battery option in the maker's specifications, so it needs a pedalboard power supply or adapter.
The original Sparkle Drive draws 20mA at 9V DC2; the MOD draws 35mA1. Both figures come from Voodoo Lab's product pages.
Bypass is true, via a high-reliability gold-contact relay1. The original Sparkle Drive also features true bypass switching with a heavy-duty metal switch and an on/off status LED2.
History: from the Sparkle Drive's 808 circuit
The Sparkle Drive came first. Its overdrive circuit is an exact replica of an '808, combined with true bypass switching and the clean blend3. Voodoo Lab's own FAQ frames it as getting that vintage 808 tone with the addition of the clean circuit3. Reviewers have placed it squarely in Tube Screamer territory: Pedal of the Day's 2014 review called the original "a Tubescreamer style drive that goes from light to medium gain"7.
The MOD keeps that 808-based circuit as its Vintage mode and adds the three modified voicings on the MOD switch1. In Voodoo Lab's own tone demos, the pedal also pairs with the company's Giggity preamp: in a Strat and Les Paul tone guide, James Santiago set the MOD's switch to position 1 for an even thicker Strat tone, and noted that without Giggity in the chain the high-gain mode sounds trebly and a bit crumbly8.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day's 2023 review was enthusiastic, calling the MOD possibly their favorite of the Voodoo Lab pedals they had covered, with a wide-ranging tonal spectrum usable for any guitar and amp setup6:

Questions
Is the Sparkle Drive MOD true bypass?
Yes. Voodoo Lab specifies true bypass switching via a high-reliability gold-contact relay, so the pedal passes your signal untouched when it is off. The original Sparkle Drive also uses true bypass switching.
What is the difference between the Sparkle Drive and the Sparkle Drive MOD?
The original Sparkle Drive has one overdrive circuit, an exact replica of an '808, with the Clean blend control. The MOD keeps those tones in its Vintage mode and adds three modified circuits, Lead, Rhythm and High Gain, selectable on a MOD switch.
Is the Sparkle Drive MOD a Tube Screamer?
Not literally, but its Vintage mode is built on the same 808-style circuit as the Ibanez Tube Screamer family. Voodoo Lab says the stock circuit is 808-based, and reviewers have described the original Sparkle Drive as a Tubescreamer-style drive.
What does the Clean knob do on the Sparkle Drive MOD?
It blends a boosted clean signal with the overdrive. All the way down is overdrive only, all the way up is clean only, and in between you get a mix of both. Voodoo Lab describes this as simulating the layering of two amps, one clean and one saturated.
Can the Sparkle Drive MOD run on a battery?
No. The pedal is powered by a 9V DC supply through a 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel connector with center negative polarity, drawing 35mA. There is no battery option in the maker's specifications.
