The Wren and Cuff Super Russian is a two-in-one fuzz and boost pedal: one side is Wren and Cuff's recreation of the Sovtek Tall Font Green Russian Big Muff, and the other is a germanium buffered clean boost that sits in front of the fuzz circuit. The maker describes it as a "TALL FONT RUSSIAN PLUS GERMANIUM BUFFER-BOOST," built from the company's Tall Font Russian circuit with a bit more heat and output on the muff side1. Pedal of the Day, reviewing it in 2018, called it a dark green monster with much more going on than the enclosure suggests2.
The internal signal order is fixed: Guitar, then Clean Boost, then Tall Font Muff, then Amp1. That means the boost always feeds the fuzz rather than the other way around, which is the arrangement players use to push a fuzz harder into saturation.
The controls
The three main knobs are volume, tone and distortion, which Premier Guitar's reviewer noted are typical Big Muff controls4. Around those knobs sit the features that separate the Super Russian from a straight Big Muff clone:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Volume, Tone, Distortion | Standard Big Muff knob set4 |
| Mid toggle | Removes the traditional muff mid-scoop EQ and flattens out the mid response1 |
| Creamy toggle | Activates the "Creamy Dreamer" mod, which the maker describes as sending things into a rich hyper-drive on command12 |
| Boost footswitch | Engages the separate germanium buffered boost section on its own12 |
JHS Pedals' write-up counts four modes built in: creamy dreamer, traditional, flat, and scoop3. Pedal of the Day described the mid toggle as letting you either flatten out the mid response or scoop the mids via a selectable toggle switch, and the Creamy option as taking the entire pedal up one more notch on a second toggle2.
The boost side is worth its own look. Wren and Cuff describes it as "a separate crystal clear transparent germanium buffered boost section before the muff to push things even harder if needed"1. Pedal of the Day's take:
"A tasty, rich germanium boost, this side gives you more punch via a transparent, crystal clear tone enhancer."
Because the boost has its own footswitch, you can run it without the fuzz, use it alone as a clean boost, or stack it into the muff for more saturation2.
Where the circuit comes from
The muff side is based on Wren and Cuff's Tall Font Russian, one of the company's 1990s muff recreations that has been a mainstay in the Wren and Cuff line since the late 2000s15. The Tall Font Russian itself is a recreation of the Russian Tall Font Big Muff, the green first-series Sovtek pedal with screws on the side6.
The original it traces back to is the Sovtek Green Russian Big Muff Pi, whose first edition came in a die cast metal box with a tall, condensed font, which is how the "Tall Font" nickname arose. Kit Rae's Big Muff history notes that the paint on those first-edition Tall Font green Big Muffs was very poor quality and literally flakes off, and that the circuit was based on Bob Myer's original circuit, manufactured in St Petersburg, Russia7. The Tall Font and Bubble Font versions date to around 19948.
Wren and Cuff's designer notes on the Tall Font sound: the highs are more present and clear than in Civil War muffs, giving an openness and slight gritty edge, with an overdrivey compression in the lows, rich upper harmonics, a less pronounced mid-scoop than other generations, and less gain overall. That boxy-growl makes the circuit particularly good on bass and for raunchy, less friendly guitar tones6. The maker also says the designer hand-wired over 150 muff and muff-related pedals point-to-point on perf-board in the early days of the company9.
For players wanting the same flavor in a smaller box, Wren and Cuff also makes a MINI Tall Font Russian, a part-for-part recreation of the transitional-model Tall Font Sovtek-era Muff, with true hard-wire bypass, made in the USA, and covered by the same lifetime warranty5. The XTS series mini pedals are based on the earlier Tall Font and Fade Font circuits and use Volume, Distortion and Tone controls10.
The original Sovtek Green Russian Big Muffs had no true bypass7. The Super Russian's true hard-wire bypass1 is one of the places the recreation departs from the original hardware.
What reviewers said
Premier Guitar reviewed the Super Russian in August 2021 and summed up its verdict in three lines4:
"Beautiful variations on Sovtek-style tones. Copious tone-shaping options. Very nice boost circuit."
The same reviewer found the Tall Font side "buzzier and airier than my Sovtek or any of my favorite Sovtek clones," with more detail and articulation and less compression, which they called "a very cool thing"4. Pedal of the Day, reviewing it in October 2018, said the pedal takes Wren and Cuff's popular Tall Font Russian and makes an awesome pedal even better2.

Questions
Is the Wren and Cuff Super Russian true bypass?
Yes. Wren and Cuff specifies true hard-wire bypass for the Super Russian, so with the pedal off your signal passes without active buffering. The original Sovtek Green Russian Big Muffs it recreates did not have true bypass, so this is one place the recreation improves on the original.
Does the Super Russian run on a battery?
Yes. It runs on a 9V battery or a 9V DC center-negative 2.1mm adapter, and draws only 8mA, so a battery lasts a long time. The current draw is low enough that it also works fine on most isolated power supplies.
What does the Creamy Dreamer toggle do?
It activates Wren and Cuff's Creamy Dreamer mod, which the maker describes as sending the pedal into a rich hyper-drive on command. It is a second toggle, separate from the mid EQ switch, and sits alongside the traditional, flat, and scoop modes the pedal offers.
Can you use the buffer-boost without the fuzz?
Yes. The germanium buffered boost is a separate, footswitchable section that sits before the muff circuit in the signal path. Pedal of the Day describes it as a transparent, crystal clear tone enhancer that gives more punch, and you can engage it on its own.
What is a Tall Font Big Muff?
It is the first edition of the Sovtek Green Russian Big Muff, made in St Petersburg, Russia around 1994, named for the tall condensed font on its die cast metal box. Compared with other Big Muffs it has a milder mid-scoop, a throaty growl, and a comparatively low-gain grind that suits bass as well as guitar.
