The Zoom G2G is a multi-effects pedal from Zoom, a George Lynch signature edition of the Zoom G21. It packs 54 effects, 40 patches (20 live and 20 studio) designed around Lynch's sounds, and a built-in drum machine into a floor unit2. It is a digital pedal1, and it is no longer available new2.

As a rebadged G2, it covers the same ground as that unit: a chain of effect modules you edit and store as patches, with a rougher metal finish setting this version apart visually1.

The G2G is discontinued and listed as no longer available2. Players looking for a current Zoom compact multi-effects unit are served by the G2 FOUR, launched in late 20223.

What it does

The G2G organizes its effects into modules, in this order: COMPRESSOR, WAH/EFX, ZNR, DRIVE, EQ, EXTRA EQ/CABI&MIC, MOD/SFX, DELAY, REVERB and CONTROL2. The WAH/EFX module alone covers Auto-Wah, Auto-Resonance, Booster, Tremolo, Phaser and Ring Modulation among others2. ZNR is Zoom's noise reduction, sitting between the drive and EQ stages2.

Ahead of the chain there is a pre-effects section that works as a booster and can also shape tone1. A tap tempo button changes the speed of time-based effects1. Patches are selected up and down with the footswitches, and the full preset list is in the manual4.

The George Lynch connection is the point of this edition: it comes loaded with patches he designed, split between 20 live and 20 studio sounds12.

Power and connections

Power comes from 4 x AA batteries or the Zoom Model AD-0006 AC adapter2. The back panel carries the on/off switch and the power input1.

Connections are simple. There is a guitar input socket, and the out socket doubles as a stereo headphone socket, so silent practice works without extra gear1. An expression pedal input controls volume by default, and in the control section it can be assigned to other parameters such as wah, wah intensity, modulation speed and effect mix1.

There is no direct USB connection on this version1. That is a real difference from Zoom's later compact units: the G2 FOUR, launched in late 2022, works as a USB audio interface for recording with a computer or smartphone and is designed to output to guitar amps, studio monitors, PAs and headphones35.

Build and controls

The unit has a rough metal finish that distinguishes it from the standard G21. The Gearfacts reviewer found the footswitches sturdy:

"you can see how sturdy these switches are every bit as dependable as the switches that you see on dedicated pedals"
Gearfacts, YouTube review1

A large 2-digit LED display shows the selected patch2.

What reviewers said

The Gearfacts reviewer called it "one of the best multi effects units you can get," while noting a tonal tendency:

"I do find that generally it's a little bassy so a nice treble boost in the middle is usually pretty helpful"
Gearfacts, YouTube review1

A 2008 demo by Aaron Endsley walked through the patch selection, noting that you move up and down through many channels with the list given in the manual4.

Where it sits in Zoom's line

The G2G is a variant of the Zoom G2, with the same electronics in a signature finish and with Lynch's patches loaded1. Its place has since been taken by the G2 FOUR and G2X FOUR, which add USB audio and a modern connection set35.

Questions

Does the Zoom G2G run on batteries?

Yes. The G2G runs on 4 x AA batteries, or on the Zoom Model AD-0006 AC adapter. That makes it usable away from a power supply, though battery life depends on the cells you use.

Can you use headphones with the Zoom G2G?

Yes. The out socket on the back also works as a stereo headphone socket, so you can practice silently. There is no USB audio on this version, so headphone practice is the main silent option rather than computer recording.

Does the Zoom G2G have an expression pedal input?

Yes. The G2G has an expression pedal input that controls volume by default, and it can be reassigned in the control section to parameters such as wah, wah intensity, modulation speed and effect mix.

Is the Zoom G2G still made?

No. The G2G is no longer available. It was a limited George Lynch signature edition of the Zoom G2, and Zoom's later compact multi-effects line, such as the G2 FOUR launched in late 2022, replaced it.

How many patches does the Zoom G2G hold?

It carries 40 patches, 20 live and 20 studio, based on the creations of George Lynch. Patches are selected up and down with the footswitches, and the full list appears in the manual.
