The Anasounds Full Story is a fuzz pedal with a twist: instead of one fixed circuit, it holds small interchangeable circuit boards called Tone Cards, and each card entirely changes the pedal's circuit and personality1. The pedal traces the history of what Anasounds calls the legendary massive disto-fuzz created in the United States in 1969, the fuzz/distortion pedal born in New York City that became the gold standard for massive gain and infinite sustain12. Two cards sit inside at once, giving two fully independent fuzz channels that can be stacked or used separately34.

Anasounds describes the result as a huge, scooped sound for simple riffs and infinite sustain for lyrical solos2.

A two-channel fuzz built on Tone Cards

The core idea is the Tone Card: a small electronic card that can be interchanged inside the pedal and entirely modifies its circuit1. The Full Story holds two at once, a Main Fuzz slot and a Secondary Fuzz slot, each with its own footswitch, its own settings and its own Mid toggle18. Guitar World described the arrangement when the pedal launched: players open the wooden-topped enclosure and install their choice of cards, then hit the footswitch of the corresponding slot to engage the fuzz of their choice, with the two channels stackable3.

The two built-in fuzzes of the regular version are voiced differently. The main fuzz is inspired by the first Russian version of the massive disto-fuzz from the 90s, but with deeper mids, while the secondary fuzz is inspired by the very first version released in 1969, with less bass2. A Mid switch radically changes the character by bringing in the midrange, turning a big riff sound into a lead voice2.

The manual names two switchable modes: Lead fuzz, a mid boosted setting for clear lead tones and solos that sit well in a mix, and Massive rhythmics fuzz, a mid scooped setting with powerful lows for huge rhythm parts and fat stoner riffs1.

The controls and footswitches

The regular Full Story has two footswitches, one per fuzz slot, with three independent settings for each circuit43. The right footswitch activates the card in the Main Fuzz slot and the left footswitch activates the Secondary Fuzz card1.

ControlWhat it does
Fuzz knobGain control. Left for a dirty, fuzzy overdrive; right for massive gain and huge sustain1
Tone knobLeft cuts highs for a fat, heavy sound; right cuts bass for a bright sound. Range depends on the card inserted1
Out knobOutput volume. Set to unity, or above to boost the output and overload the amp's input1
Mid switch (per channel)Down adds midrange and presence; up gives the original character of the Tone Card1

The manual also notes that, unlike other fuzzes, the Full Story can be placed anywhere in the signal chain: boost or overdrive pedals can shape the signal before it, and Amp in a Box pedals can act as a cranked amp feeding it9.

Power

The Full Story runs on a 9V DC negative center power supply only, with a maximum consumption of 124mA1. That draw is high for an analog fuzz, so it needs a proper pedalboard power supply rather than a small battery-style source.

History: a 1969 New York fuzz in seven cards

The Full Story began as a limited edition pedal that retraced the history of the legendary fuzz through seven historical versions1. Anasounds says the concept started with a 2020 episode the company made for the YouTube channel PALF about the history of the Big Muff7. The maker studied many fuzz and distortion units from the seventies and nineties to define seven colors, and describes the result as massive sound and infinite sustain with no compromise in fidelity compared with the vintage pedals7.

The seven cards of the collector's edition are each styled on a legendary model, and Anasounds pitches them by player107:

  • Ram's Head: "Need infinite sustain that would make David Gilmour proud? That's what the Ram's Head is for!"7
  • Red & Black: "Need Jack White-style aggression? The Red & Black will be perfect for that!"7
  • Green Russian: "Need greasy garage riffs à la Black Keys? The Green Russian obviously!"7
  • Black Russian: "Feel like playing stoner? Easy, just pull out the Black Russian!"7

Later cards went further back. The first Tone Card in the full pack is based on the first version released from 1969 to 1972, with a scooped sound and huge bass; Anasounds' version brings back some midrange and slightly lowers the bass for precision and modernity11. The second takes the characteristics of the first blue and gray Russian version from the early 90s, with mids lowered a bit more for a slightly dirtier sound that reacts well with the Mid switch11.

Versions and editions

The Full Story has appeared in several forms:

The collector's edition differs from the later versions in more than its cards. It has three footswitches giving seven possible combinations, plus a booster that only exists for that version8. The booster section has its own illuminated volume potentiometer, a silver selector offering four voicings from a classic treble booster to a more midrange focused boost, and a trimpot that adjusts impedance to match different pickups10. Its middle footswitch activates the Main Fuzz card and its left footswitch the Secondary Fuzz, associated with three small illuminated knobs10.

Guitar World reported at launch that the collector's edition, including the pedal and all seven Big Muff-style Tone Cards, was priced at €399 and sold out direct from the manufacturer, with Anasounds saying third-party retailers would have some stock worldwide3.

The Tone Card range has since grown beyond the original seven. With the two newer Full Story versions came seven new cards: three by Anasounds and four in collaboration with other brands8. The range now covers the collector's edition versions of the classic circuits, Anasounds' own creations, and the collaboration cards, all compatible with the Full Story pedal range1113. There is also a kit with additional components for building your own unique sounding circuit13.

On bass

Anasounds says the Full Story works just as well with a bass or a guitar, with the seven cards developed for the best possible low-end response without changing the original sound and playing feel on guitar4. Bass players looking at the wider pedal landscape can compare it against other options on the bass pedals page.

Questions

Does the Anasounds Full Story work on bass?

Yes. Anasounds says the Full Story works just as well with a bass or a guitar, and that the seven cards were developed for the best possible low-end response without changing the original sound and playing feel on guitar. Bass players can use the same cards and the same Mid switch voicings as guitarists.

How do you change the Tone Cards in the Full Story?

The pedal has a wooden-topped enclosure that opens, revealing two Tone Card slots. You pull one card out and press another in. Each card is a small electronic circuit that entirely modifies the pedal's circuit, and the two slots give two fully independent channels that can be stacked or used on their own.

Is the Full Story collector's edition still available?

No. The collector's edition was a limited boxset of 250 pieces released in May 2022, and it sold out direct from Anasounds. The company said part of the stock went to retailers worldwide, so third-party retailers may still have units, but Anasounds' own listing shows it as sold out.

Is the Anasounds Full Story based on the Big Muff?

Yes. Anasounds describes it as inspired by the fuzz/distortion pedal born in 1969 in New York City, the Big Muff, and the concept began with a 2020 YouTube episode Anasounds made about the history of the Big Muff. The cards reproduce and revise different versions of that circuit.

How many Anasounds Full Story Collector's Editions were made?

The collector's edition was a limited boxset of 250 pieces, launched in May 2022. It came in packaging handmade by Spanish craftspeople and contained the pedal plus seven Tone Cards covering seven versions of the original fuzz's history.

Which Big Muff versions do the Full Story Tone Cards copy?

The collector's edition's seven cards cover seven historical versions, including the Ram's Head, the Red & Black, the Green Russian and the Black Russian. Anasounds studied fuzz and distortion units from the seventies and nineties to define the seven voicings, and its own cards revise the 1969 to 1972 first version and the early 90s blue and grey Russian version.
