The Behringer BM-13 PHASER is an analog phaser pedal from Behringer, modeled on the Moog MF-103 12-Stage Phaser1. Behringer describes it as a box of "swirling, sweeping, analog goodness," with an LFO rate that runs from a lazy 0.01 Hz up to 250 Hz for warbly, out-there textures2. It opened for pre-order at Thomann priced at $117, and was later available to ship at $116.001.

A phaser splits your signal and shifts one copy's phase across a bank of stages, then recombines the two, producing the moving notches that give the effect its sweep. The BM-13 offers that sweep with controls for shaping the waveform, an LFO rate that runs from 0.01 Hz to 250 Hz, and expression pedal inputs for live tweaking2.

The controls

The BM-13 carries the same six knobs as the Moog original: Output Level, Drive, Sweep, Resonance, LFO Rate and Amount1. Two switches sit alongside them, one to toggle between 6-stage and 12-stage phasing and one for LFO Speed1.

ControlWhat it does
Output LevelSets the output volume1
DriveInput drive control1
SweepShapes the waveform's sweep21
ResonanceSets the feedback, increasing the resonance of the effect14
LFO RateSets the speed of the low-frequency oscillator, from 0.01 Hz up to 250 Hz2
AmountSets how much LFO is applied1
Stage switchToggles between 6-stage and 12-stage phasing1
LFO Speed switchSwitches the LFO speed range1

The LFO range is wide. Behringer says you can crank it down to a lazy 0.01 Hz for slow movement, or flip it into high gear for "warbly, out-there textures" at up to 250 Hz2. The Resonance control works through a variable feedback circuit, the same approach the MF-103 used to increase the resonance of its effect4.

Beyond the knobs, the BM-13 comes equipped with expression pedal inputs, giving control over key parameters from modular gear or performance pedals2.

Power and connections

The pedal runs on 9V DC, center negative, drawing 400mA3. That current draw is high for a single analog pedal, so it is worth planning for on a shared power supply.

For outputs, there is a main out plus an aux out. The aux output delivers the signal in phase, which means you can insert the pedal into a mono signal and use the two outputs to make it stereo, or split the signal to two amps1. Behringer also highlights the stereo output capability as a way to stretch your sound wide across the stage or a mix2.

At 400mA, the BM-13 draws far more current than most analog phasers. Check that your power supply can deliver it on a single output before building it into a pedalboard3.

The enclosure is rugged metal construction with true bypass, which the maker positions as road-ready reliability without tone loss3.

A version of the Moog MF-103

The BM-13 is a recreation of the Moog MF-103 12-Stage Phaser, an analog 12-stage pedal first issued in the 1990s13. The MF-103 was designed by Bob Moog himself, with four knobs controlling LFO Rate and Amount and Phaser Sweep and Resonance, an LFO range of 0.1 Hz to 250 Hz, and the same variable feedback resonance circuit4. Behringer's version keeps that control set and adds Output Level and Drive knobs, the stage switch and the LFO Speed switch1.

Behringer has form with this kind of recreation. Its Dual-Phase, a recreation of the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, was announced in 2022 and launched in 2023, and the company also makes the Vintage Phaser and the VP1. The BM-13 is its take on the Moog circuit.

Gearnews covered the announcement and the price in detail. Reviewing the deal at launch, the writer found it very affordable and appealing51:

"Chances are, I will buy one myself at this price."

Who it is for

Behringer builds the BM-13 for guitarists, bassists, keyboardists and synth players, and says it also works in the studio on vocals, drums or entire mixes for what the maker calls instant vibe and warmth2. The expression pedal inputs make it a natural partner for modular gear2.

Availability and price

The BM-13 opened for pre-order at Thomann priced at $11721. A 14% discount later brought it to $115, and it was then available to ship immediately at $116.001. Gearnews' writer found it very affordable at this price, saying "Chances are, I will buy one myself at this price"1. At the time of a later Gearnews article, the BM-13's delivery time was still listed as "several months"5.

Questions

Is the Behringer BM-13 a Moog MF-103 clone?

Yes, it is a recreation of the Moog MF-103 12-Stage Phaser, an analog Moogerfooger pedal first issued in the 1990s. Behringer's version carries the same Output Level, Drive, Sweep, Resonance, LFO Rate and Amount controls as the Moog original, along with a switch for 6- or 12-stage phasing.

Is the Behringer BM-13 true bypass?

Yes. The BM-13 is listed with true bypass, so the signal passes through uncolored when the pedal is off. It also has rugged metal construction, which the maker positions as road-ready reliability.

Can the BM-13 switch between 6 and 12 stages?

Yes. A stage switch toggles between 6-stage and 12-stage phasing, and Behringer says each mode delivers its own flavor, dimension and character. Six stages gives a subtler phase, while twelve stages deepens the effect.

Does the BM-13 work with synths and keyboards?

Yes. Behringer builds it for guitarists, bassists, keyboardists and synth players, and says it can be used in the studio on vocals, drums or entire mixes. Expression pedal inputs also let you control key parameters from modular gear or performance pedals.
