The Behringer Dual-Phase is an analog dual phaser pedal: two complete phase shifters in one enclosure, each with its own RATE, DEPTH and FEEDBACK controls, that you can run in series or in parallel1. Behringer describes it as an authentic recreation of the popular phase shifter from the 1970s, built around 12 opto-couplers1. That original is the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, and the Dual-Phase is Behringer's version of it, renamed from its first BI-PHASE title23.

Controls and how it works

Each of the two phasors is a self-contained phaser with its own set of controls, so the pedal behaves like two phasers that happen to share a box1.

ControlWhat it does
RATE (per phaser)Adjusts the rate of its phase shifter4
DEPTH (per phaser)Depth control for its phase shifter1
FEEDBACK (per phaser)Feedback control for its phase shifter1
Wave shape switch (per phaser)Switches the wave shape oscillator between sine and square wave4
Footswitch A / BEngages or disengages either Phasor A or B1
Expression / CV inputConnect an expression pedal or any control voltage source to manipulate the sweep speed of either phasor1

Because the two engines can be chained in series or run side by side in parallel, the pedal covers everything from a single phaser sound to more complex moving combinations. Behringer suggests uses ranging from "dreamy Gilmour-esque soundscapes or super-trippy ring-modulator tones"1. The expression and control voltage input is worth noting: plugging an expression pedal into it lets you sweep the LFO speed of either phaser by foot, something the panel knobs alone cannot do1.

The pedal runs on standard 9 to 12 volt DC power1. Behringer's product page does not give a current draw figure, so there is no published number to size a daisy chain against.

Where it came from

The Dual-Phase has a tangled history for a single pedal. Photographs of a Behringer recreation of the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase appeared online in February 2022 under the BI-PHASE name, before any official release3. Behringer then renamed the pedal and made it available to order as the DUAL-PHASE in November 2022, priced at $159 and, according to Behringer, "in stock and immediately shipping" from the company's factory35. Gearnews reported the pedal was quickly withdrawn after its February 2022 introduction and relaunched at the end of July 2023 under the new name, speculating whether the industry chip shortage or a legal battle behind the scenes contributed3. Guitar World dates the Dual-Phase to 2022 and notes it "copied the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase's homework"6.

The list price given in June 2025 was $1593, and MusicRadar's November 2022 report also put it at $1595.

The original: the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase

The pedal the Dual-Phase recreates is the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase from Musitronics Mu-Tron. It consists of two independent 6-stage phasor circuits and two sweep generators (oscillators), with square and sine wave operation78. The current Musitronics reissue is described as all-analog and parts-accurate to the original, as much as is possible8. Aion FX calls it "a sprawling circuit that could be operated as a single 12-stage phaser or two independent six-stage phasers"9, and Premier Guitar's history of the company records that the first version of the Bi-Phase was called the Phase II10.

The Dual-Phase mirrors that architecture in pedal form: two phasors, two LFOs with sine and square shapes, and series or parallel routing14. Behringer has since applied the same approach to other phasers, announcing the Behringer BM-13 Phaser, an analog 12-stage phaser modeled after the Moog Phaser pedal of the 1990s3. Players who want a simpler single-engine option in the same maker's range can look at the Behringer Vintage Phaser or the Behringer VP1, or browse the wider field on the phaser pedals page.

Questions

Is the Behringer Dual-Phase analog?

Yes. Behringer describes the Dual-Phase as a true analog dual phase shifter built around 12 opto-couplers, and calls it an authentic recreation of the popular phase shifter from the 1970s, meaning the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase. The original Bi-Phase was an all-analog design as well, consisting of two independent six-stage phasor circuits and two sweep generators.

Can the two phasers run in series and in parallel?

Yes. The Dual-Phase has two phase shifters, each with its own RATE, DEPTH and FEEDBACK controls, and Behringer says you can run them in series or in parallel. Each phaser is engaged or disengaged with its own footswitch, so you can also use just one at a time.

Does the Behringer Dual-Phase take an expression pedal?

Yes. Behringer says you can connect an expression pedal or any control voltage source to manipulate the sweep speed of either of the two phasers. That adds hands-free control over the LFO rate of Phasor A or B beyond the panel controls.

What is the difference between the Behringer Bi-Phase and Dual-Phase?

They are the same pedal. Behringer introduced it as the BI-PHASE in February 2022, quickly withdrew it, and relaunched it at the end of July 2023 under the new name DUAL-PHASE, reportedly after the original name was dropped.

What power supply does the Behringer Dual-Phase need?

Behringer specifies standard 9 to 12 volt DC power. The company does not publish a current draw figure for the pedal on its product page, so check your supply meets the voltage range and use an isolated output as with any digital-free analog pedal.

What is the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase?

The Mu-Tron Bi-Phase is a 1970s dual phaser made by Musitronics Mu-Tron, consisting of two independent six-stage phasor circuits and two sweep generators, with square and sine wave operation. It could be run as a single 12-stage phaser or as two independent six-stage phasers, and its first version was called the Phase II.
