The Boss GX-10 is a compact amp and effects processor for guitar and bass, built around the same sound engine and color touch display as the larger Boss GX-100 in a portable, travel-ready design1. It packs 32 amplifier types and 170 Boss effects into a rugged metal chassis, with amp tone handled by Boss's AIRD technology for what the maker describes as authentic tube amplifier tone and touch response1. It reached authorized U.S. Boss retailers in October 2024 at $399.9923.
The GX-10 is the latest iteration of the GX series of multi-effects, and Boss's own buying guide positions it as one of the most affordable multi-effects pedals in the Boss catalog4. Gearnews counted 15 blocks per preset, so a single patch can chain a lot of processing at once5.
What the GX-10 does: the GX-100 sound engine in a smaller unit
Boss says the GX-10 brings "a universe of ultra-responsive BOSS tone processing in a travel-ready size"1. Under the hood it is a digital unit: 24-bit AD and 32-bit DA conversion, 32-bit floating-point processing and a 48 kHz sampling rate, figures Boss lists as delivering exceptional audio quality1. The amp side uses AIRD technology, Boss's approach to modeling tube amp tone and touch response1.
The unit carries 32 amplifier types and 170 Boss effects1, with 15 blocks available per preset according to Gearnews's review5. Guitar World's reviewer described the GX-10 as derived from the flagship GX-100 multi-effects processor7, and Boss's buying guide calls it the latest iteration of the GX series78.
Sound creation happens on a color graphics LCD touch screen (480 x 272 dots)6 with four dynamic parameter knobs for fast editing1. Presets live in 66 banks holding 198 user memories1.
Controls, footswitch modes and the expression pedal
The GX-10 has three footswitches with flexible control modes1, an onboard expression pedal with a toe switch1, and a 1/4-inch control input (CTL 2, 3/EXP 2) for additional footswitches or another expression pedal7.
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Up/Down Mode | Scrolls through memories one at a time; set up basic memories for clean, crunch rhythm and lead sounds, or load the 66 banks and 198 user memories and tap through them sequentially1 |
| Manual Mode | Reconfigures the footswitches to control three user-assignable targets, changing up to 20 assignable parameters with one press1 |
| Bank/Number Mode | Selects memories within banks and unlocks the Current Number function, giving access to one or more parameters by pressing the switch for the currently loaded memory1 |
The expression pedal toggles between volume and wah, and pulling the pedal back activates the tuner. Boss notes you can customize it to control nearly anything you want through the GX-10's assign matrix9.
Power and connections
The GX-10 runs on the included AC adapter rated at 1.2A7. Reported current draw varies: Bass Gear Magazine's review lists 600 mA6, while Bass Magazine's launch coverage gives 1200 mA6. There is no battery option listed7.
Connectivity, per Guitar World's review7:
- 1 x 1/4-inch instrument input (single input, no stereo inputs)
- 2 x 1/4-inch outputs (L/Mono, R)
- 1 x 1/4-inch headphone output
- 2 x 1/4-inch send and return jacks
- 1 x 1/4-inch control input (CTL 2, 3/EXP 2)
- USB audio connectivity10
The send/return jacks are there to integrate favorite pedals or an amp's effects loop into the GX-10 signal flow, as Premier Guitar's launch coverage noted2. The GX-10 also supports the optional Boss Bluetooth Audio MIDI Dual Adaptor, which unlocks on-the-gig wireless editing via the mobile version of the app3.
Firmware updates and versions
The GX-10's firmware has been updated steadily since launch. The version number appears in the lower right corner of the startup display when the unit powers on11. Boss's support page states that Version 1.06 or later is the latest version11.
| Version | Date | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Ver.1.02 | October 2024 | New preset patches in P05-1 through P07-2; fixed an issue where an IR loaded on some USER area in SPEAKER TYPE did not sound11 |
| Ver.1.03 | November 2024 | Operating stability enhanced11 |
| Ver.1.04 | December 2024 | Fixed Carryover not working under certain conditions11 |
| Ver.1.05 | March 2026 | Specification change release: the polyphonic tuner function is removed; OUTPUT SELECT disabled when AMP is disabled11 |
| Ver.1.06 | May 2026 | Bug fix release: fixed low effect level on Shimmer Reverb and Shimmer Delay11 |
Ver.1.05 (March 2026) removed the polyphonic tuner function. The GX-10 shipped with a polyphonic tuner that Gearnews found enabled particularly fast retuning5, but units running Ver.1.05 or later no longer have it.
How to update
The update is carried out with the unit and a computer connected via USB11. You need the GX-10, a USB cable, and a Windows or Mac computer with a USB port compliant with USB 2.011.
- Download the file named gx10_sys_v106.zip from Boss's support page11.
- Copy the file into the root directory of the "GX-10" drive11.
- Hold down the WRITE button and turn on the power, continuing to hold WRITE until "GX-10 Updater" appears on the display11.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish11.
Never power off the GX-10 while the update is in progress. A power failure during the update requires servicing at a Roland service center11.
A separate GX-10 driver, Ver.1.0.0, is available for Windows 10/11 and for macOS from the downloads page1213.
What reviewers said
Guitar World's review found the GX-10 well built and easy to use, with a caveat on the amp modeling14:
"Well-built and easy to use, the Boss GX-10 is a superb option if you want the very best effects modeling. For us, however, the amp modeling side is starting to feel a little dated and the Flex Prime does a better job of simulating guitar amps."14
Guitar.com's review priced it at $399 / £37915, matching the U.S. launch price of $399.993. Gearnews highlighted the 15 blocks per preset and the polyphonic tuner as shipped5, and Bass Gear Magazine's review confirmed the 48 kHz sampling, 24-bit AD and 32-bit DA conversion, and 32-bit floating-point processing6.

Questions
Does the Boss GX-10 work with bass?
Yes. Boss describes the GX-10 as a compact amp and effects processor for guitar and bass, and Premier Guitar called it a powerful amp and effects processor for both instruments. Bass players get dedicated amp types among the 32 amplifiers, and Bass Magazine covered the launch with bass players in mind.
Does the Boss GX-10 still have a polyphonic tuner?
No. The GX-10 shipped with a polyphonic tuner, but Boss removed the polyphonic tuner function in firmware Ver.1.05 in March 2026. The tuner itself remains: pulling the expression pedal back activates it. Players who want polyphonic tuning should stay aware of which firmware version their unit runs.
Can I load impulse responses into the Boss GX-10?
Yes. The GX-10 accepts user impulse responses loaded into the USER area of the SPEAKER TYPE setting. An early firmware bug where an IR loaded on some USER area in SPEAKER TYPE did not sound was fixed in Ver.1.02 in October 2024.
Does the Boss GX-10 have an effects loop?
Yes. The GX-10 has send and return jacks, which Boss's launch coverage says are available to integrate favorite pedals or an amp's effects loop into the GX-10 signal flow. This lets you keep analog stomps or a preamp in the chain alongside the internal effects.
How do I update the Boss GX-10 firmware?
Connect the GX-10 to a Windows or Mac computer over USB, download the system file from Boss, and copy it into the root directory of the GX-10 drive. Hold the WRITE button while powering on until GX-10 Updater appears, then follow the display. Never power off during the update; a failed update requires service at a Roland service center.
Can the GX-10 be edited wirelessly?
Yes, with an accessory. The GX-10 supports the optional Boss Bluetooth Audio MIDI Dual Adaptor, which unlocks wireless editing from the mobile version of the editing app. Without it, editing is done on the touch display or over USB.
