The Electro-Harmonix Nano Operation Overlord Allied Overdrive is a compact analog overdrive and distortion pedal from Electro-Harmonix, released in 20191. It is a nano-sized, mono version of the company's full-size Operation Overlord, built to work with guitar, bass and keyboards, and it covers ground from a clean boost through mild crunch to what Guitar World called "intensely saturated overdrive"12.

The heart of the pedal is its JFET circuit. As GuitarPlayer's reviewer put it, "The heart of the Nano Overlord is three JFET gain stages that provide the amp-style overdrive"3. That amp-style character, plus an active three-band EQ and a dry blend, is what sets it apart from more conventional overdrive pedals.

Three JFET gain stages for amp-style overdrive

In Normal mode, the Nano Overlord relies on three amp-like JFET gain stages that deliver low to medium gain sounds1. Gearnews described the design simply: "The tones are generated by a JFET circuit"6. The JFET approach is meant to mimic the way a tube amplifier breaks up, rather than the harder clipping of a typical diode-based overdrive pedal.

The range is broad. Guitar World described the pedal as offering "distortion ranging from boost to mild crunch to intensely saturated overdrive"2, and Premier Guitar's launch announcement called it "a versatile, multi-instrument capable, distortion/overdrive with a broad range of distortion effects and tone shaping"4. The dry blend and input level matching (covered below) are what make it practical for bass and keys alongside guitar.

The controls

The front panel carries six knobs, a Boost switch and a three-way input level switch3. Each control, as described by Electro-Harmonix1:

ControlWhat it does
GAINControls the amount of overdrive/distortion
VOLUMESets the output level
DRYMixes a clean unaltered signal with the distortion produced
TREBLEActive control of the high frequency range
MIDActive control of the level of the middle frequency range
BASSActive control of the low frequency range

The EQ is an active three-band EQ, which Electro-Harmonix describes as providing "superlative tone shaping"1. GuitarPlayer's reviewer highlighted "treble, mid and bass controls for the active three-band EQ" as a powerful feature of the pedal3.

The DRY knob deserves special attention. GuitarPlayer described it as "the dry level control, which lets you add your uneffected signal to the overdriven tone"3. Premier Guitar's announcement noted the blend is "especially useful for bass and keyboards because it ensures that the instrument's articulation, harmonic content and bottom end are retained"4.

The INPUT LVL switch is a three-way selector for lo, normal or hi input levels. GuitarPlayer called it "a three-way switch to choose lo, normal or hi input levels, making it easy to match (or mismatch) the pedal to hotter or" weaker signals3. Electro-Harmonix says it "controls the initial input level of your instrument"1.

Normal and Boost modes

The pedal is switchable between two modes: Normal and Boost1. A Boost button on the front panel toggles Boost mode on and off, and a blue LED lights when Boost is engaged1.

In Normal mode, the three JFET stages alone provide the low to medium gain sounds1. In Boost mode, "a classic pedal-style overdrive circuit is added before the JFET stages to increase overall distortion"1. Electro-Harmonix describes the effect as being "like adding a pedal-type OD circuit in front of the JFET stages to really increase overall distortion"1. Gearnews framed it the same way: activating Boost "gives you access to classic overdrive tones" that are added to the signal chain before the JFET stages, pushing the pedal into heavier territory6.

Boost can also be switched remotely. A quarter-inch BOOST FSW jack "allows an external momentary footswitch to control toggling Boost mode on and off"1, and GuitarPlayer's reviewer confirmed the boost is "switchable both on the front panel and via an external switch"3. The main footswitch toggles between bypass and effect modes1.

History and versions

The Nano Operation Overlord is a smaller sibling of the full-size Electro-Harmonix Operation Overlord, which offered full stereo operation plus mono in/stereo out besides standard mono7. The Nano keeps the input level option but loses the stereo: as Guitar World's Trevor Curwen wrote, "This one keeps the input level option but loses the stereo"5. GuitarPlayer likewise described the Nano as "a mono pedal that creates the same overdrive and distortion tones as its bigger sibling"3.

The Nano was announced in October 2019 with "a compact, space-saving design"4 and was available at launch4. The full-size Operation Overlord has since been discontinued; Electro-Harmonix's product page marks it discontinued in 20258.

The full-size Operation Overlord Allied Overdrive is discontinued as of 20258. The Nano version remains the mono, compact take on the same circuit.

What reviewers said

Reviews were positive across the board. Guitar World's verdict, from a March 2020 review by Trevor Curwen, was: "An affordable and versatile drive/distortion packed into a practical space-saving footprint. 8/10"5.

GuitarPlayer's review praised the amp-like tone and feel, the powerful EQ and the tiny footprint, finding no reasons to avoid the pedal, with the overall verdict: "An amp-style overdrive that offers great versatility for guitar, bass and beyond"3. The same review did flag one practical gripe: "the power-strip-hogging wall wart is not" among the pedal's virtues3.

MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen reviewed the full-size Operation Overlord as "a practical overdrive/distortion suitable for both guitar and studio applications" and summed it up as "Versatile"7.

Questions

Is the Nano Operation Overlord stereo like the full-size version?

No. The Nano is a mono pedal that Electro-Harmonix says delivers the same overdrive and distortion tones as the full-size Operation Overlord, but in mono. The original offered full stereo operation plus mono in and stereo out, so players who need stereo outputs should look at the larger unit.

What does the dry level knob do on the Operation Overlord?

The DRY knob mixes a clean, unaltered signal with the distortion the pedal produces. Electro-Harmonix says this blend is especially useful for bass and keyboards because it keeps the instrument's articulation, harmonic content and bottom end intact while adding overdrive on top.

Is the Electro-Harmonix Operation Overlord discontinued?

The full-size Operation Overlord Allied Overdrive is marked discontinued as of 2025 on Electro-Harmonix's product page. The Nano Operation Overlord, released in 2019, was announced as available now at launch and is the smaller mono version of the circuit.

Can the Nano Operation Overlord boost be switched with an external footswitch?

Yes. The pedal has a quarter-inch BOOST FSW jack that accepts an external momentary footswitch for toggling Boost mode on and off. Boost can also be switched from the front panel, and a blue LED lights whenever Boost mode is engaged.

What power supply does the Nano Operation Overlord need?

Electro-Harmonix ships the pedal with a 9.6VDC-200mA power adapter. GuitarPlayer's review noted the included wall wart is large, so players with crowded power strips may want to plan their board power around it.
