The Seafarer is a reverb pedal from Empty Head Effects, built by the company's designer Nic. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson calls it the "Suboceanic Ambient Atmospheric Modulated Reverb" and describes it as "A proper elemental Oceanic Reverb which goes from gently lapping modulated shore waves to Stormy Swirling and Crashing b[reakers]". In other words, one knob sweep takes you from a calm, slowly modulated shoreline wash to a heavy, swirling, storm-like ambience, all in mono.1

Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio reported the pedal as real and nearing release in August 2026, noting it had been "breadboarded back in April, teased at pedal shows, and now apparently set to dock soon".2

From lapping waves to crashing breakers

The Seafarer's character comes from a low pass filter driven by a variable LFO, with an EXP input so an expression pedal can control that filter alongside the modulation. Karlsson describes the result as a reverb that "positively drips with ambience and atmosphere", moving through water-like stages of lapping, swirling and crashing as the controls are turned up.1

It is a mono pedal, which matters if you run a stereo rig: Karlsson, who says he tends to favor stereo reverbs, calls the monophonic nature not ideal for him, but adds he was "sorely tempted" all the same, finding the pedal sounds truly phenomenal despite being mono and somewhat over-sized overall.1

The Seafarer launched as a limited release. Guitar Pedal X noted that the Ghost Edition, with its white knobs, was already sold out, and that only 3 units were recorded as remaining as of its writing.1

The controls and footswitches

The Seafarer leans into its ocean theme with the knob names, and each maps to a familiar reverb function:

ControlFunction
SwimDry level
SinkWet level
OxygenDistortion
Ocean SizeReverb length
Gravity / BuoyancyLPF depth
Storm / CalmLFO bypass
MedusenWarble
DisorientationRandom LFO speed

1

The dry and wet controls (Swim and Sink) let you blend the effect against your clean signal, while Ocean Size sets the reverb length. Oxygen adds distortion to the wash, and the modulation side is handled by Medusen for warble and Disorientation for random LFO speed, with Storm / Calm bypassing the LFO entirely when you want an unmodulated reverb.1

Two footswitches sit below the knobs:

  • Liferaft: the main engage/bypass switch1
  • The Light At The End: infinite feedback, for letting the reverb swell and sustain on its own1

Versions and availability

The stock model carries deep ocean blue knobs on a textured enclosure achieved through powder coating overlay. The limited "Seafarer Ghost Edition" swapped those for white knobs and is already sold out.1

Questions

Is the Empty Head Effects Seafarer stereo or mono?

The Seafarer is a monophonic reverb. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson describes it as a monophonic reverb that positively drips with ambience and atmosphere, and notes it offers a Variable Length Mono Reverb. He also says that as a player who tends to favour stereo reverbs, the mono nature is not ideal for him, but he was still sorely tempted by the pedal.

Can you use an expression pedal with the Seafarer?

Yes. The Seafarer has an EXP input for its low pass filter, which is controlled by a variable LFO. That means an expression pedal can sweep the filter while the modulation runs, adding movement to the underwater character of the reverb.

What does the Seafarer's Infinite Feedback footswitch do?

The second footswitch, called The Light At The End, is the Infinite Feedback switch. It sits alongside the Liferaft footswitch, which handles engage and bypass. Holding or pressing The Light At The End pushes the reverb into self-sustaining feedback, letting washes build and swell beyond what the normal wet level would allow.

How much does the Empty Head Effects Seafarer cost in the US?

Guitar Pedal X listed the Seafarer Suboceanic Ambient Atmospheric Modulated Reverb at $295 USD in the United States as of 6 August 2026, alongside €255 in the EU and £219 in the UK, sold through the Empty Head Effects website.

What is the Seafarer Ghost Edition?

The Ghost Edition was a limited version of the Seafarer with white knobs instead of the deep ocean blue knobs fitted to the stock model. Guitar Pedal X reported it as already sold out at the pedal's launch in August 2026.

How big is the Empty Head Effects Seafarer?

The Seafarer measures 190mm wide by 120mm high by 53mm thick and weighs 770g, according to Guitar Pedal X. Karlsson describes it as somewhat over-sized overall, so it takes up more board space than a standard compact pedal.
