The Source Audio Ventris Dual Reverb is a stereo reverb pedal built around two completely independent reverb processors, so it can run two reverbs at the same time rather than one12. Source Audio describes it as a way to "weave together any pair of Ventris's expertly crafted reverb effects into a single unified soundscape"1. It sits in the maker's line alongside the Nemesis Delay, which Delicious Audio called its "brother"3, and the later Source Audio Encounter3.
Two reverbs in one pedal
Set the toggle to A + B and the Ventris runs two reverbs simultaneously in parallel, in series, or in separate left and right signal paths1. Because each engine has its own processor, features like preset spillover, where one preset's reverb tail carries into the next, are built in1. Pedal of the Day's reviewer put it plainly: "Spillover between presets, dual DSP architecture and massive processing power catapult the Ventris to the top-of-the-line among reverb pedals overall"4.
The pedal's stereo input and output jacks can be used for stereo reverb effects or set up as an external effects loop5. Pedal of the Day's review stressed the point for players wiring a board: "These two reverbs ABSOLUTELY should be run in a Stereo configuration"4.
The engines
The Ventris carries 12 onboard reverb engines, with further reverb effects available through the Neuro Mobile App or Neuro Desktop Editor2. A few of the engines, as described by Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio:
- True Spring: "perfectly capturing the unmistakable 'drip' of vintage spring reverb tanks", a design De Gregorio called "a massive undertaking, requiring a deep understanding of the physical characteristics of reverb springs"2
- Plate: "the marvelously lush and diffuse effect found in classic plate fixtures from the late 1950s"2
- Room to E-Dome: a range of room sizes "starting with the warm and tight subtleties of the Room engine and advancing to the expansive reverberations of the gargantuan E-Dome"2
- Hall: "captures the lush sounds of high-powered Lexicon rack units from the 1980s"2
Source Audio's own description of the Room engine matches that span: it "captures the ambient reverberations of a real acoustic space, from a warm and intimate household room to a larger theatre sized space"1.
One engine gets singled out by Josh Scott of JHS Pedals: "The offspring setting sets off this rhythmic, melodic, crazy thing that ties into the tempo, and I've never heard anything" like it6.
Controls, MIDI and expression
The OPTION footswitch can be assigned to preset scrolling, A to B or A plus B reverb toggling, reverb hold, runaway reverb, or tap tempo15. For MIDI, the pedal offers 5-pin MIDI DIN and USB MIDI, with up to 128 effect presets recallable via MIDI PC messages1. Expression control comes through the Neuro Hub, which connects to any TRS (Tip Hot) expression pedal and can be assigned to any combination of knob parameters1.
The Ventris is a deep pedal: much of its editing lives in the Neuro app rather than on the face of the unit, and full preset access over MIDI means it pairs naturally with a switching or MIDI setup12.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day's 2018 review ranked it at the top of the field, crediting the dual DSP architecture and processing power4. Guitar World's Trevor Curwen, reviewing the later Collider, noted that "Anyone who has Source Audio's Nemesis Delay and Ventris Dual Reverb on their pedalboard has a pretty comprehensive arsenal"7. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson included it among stereo reverb workstation pedals, highlighting the stereo jacks and the OPTION footswitch assignments5.
For players who want the Ventris's engines in a smaller or different format, Source Audio later released the Collider Delay+Reverb, which combined delay and reverb engines from the Nemesis and Ventris, and more recently the Source Audio Encounter and the Source Audio Pathways Multi-Mode Full Stereo Tremo-Verb. The maker also sells a dedicated Source Audio True Spring pedal built around the spring engine. See the site's Reverb Pedals page for how the Ventris sits among other reverb types.
