The Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz Deluxe is a limited-run fuzz pedal from UK builder Great Eastern FX Co., designed by founder David Greeves and built in Cambridge, U.K.12 It takes the hybrid germanium and silicon fuzz circuit of the company's 2023 Focus Fuzz and expands it into a three-in-one gain pedal: a three-way rotary switch selects boost, overdrive or fuzz, and a second footswitch slaps on a transistor-based analog octave-up34. Around 400 units were planned, priced at £299 at launch in March 2025512.
Greeves' original idea with the Focus Fuzz was to convince players who never got on with fuzz that it could be a viable pedalboard option, working with single-coil and humbucker guitars alike1. The Deluxe carries that user-friendly aim further: Premier Guitar called it an evolution of the "très élégant" Focus Fuzz whose "deluxe" status comes from the added boost, overdrive and octave functions6.
Fuzz, overdrive and boost with an octave-up footswitch
The pedal's core is a vintage-style, original-design fuzz circuit that Delicious Audio describes as taking "the core vintage-style (yet original design) fuzz circuit" and extending it7. Guitar.com's buying guide notes it nails prized Tone Bender sounds while also serving as a medium-gain overdrive or a clean boost, plus a raspy octave mode on the second footswitch2.
What each mode offers, according to reviewers:
| Mode | What reviewers found |
|---|---|
| Fuzz | A full Fuzz Face sear, "beautifully textured, but also immaculately behaved and expansively tweakable" (Guitar Pedal X)5 |
| Overdrive | "Organic, amp-like overdrive" that responds when you dig in (MusicRadar); can go well into fuzzy-drive territory or stay classically overdrive-y1 |
| Boost | A clean boost that also feeds the Focus control into the front of the circuit3 |
| Octave (footswitch) | Adds buzzing, fractured, ringing overtones without stripping low end (Premier Guitar)6 |
The octave is the headline addition. Premier Guitar's reviewer called it "a star" and more musical than many octave-up effects, keeping chords full and detailed6. Guitar.com's Richard Purvis found it "turns nasty" in the best way: blended octave tones high up the neck in fuzz mode, and blackboard-scraping ring-mod effects on open chords3. It works in every mode, not just fuzz: "It works with the fuzz, drive, or boost"6, and Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson reported it "works beautifully with the Boost and Overdrive Modes too"5. Premier Guitar's reviewer found that adding the octave to a boosted signal with a generous heap of Focus yields funky, eccentric electric-sitar tones6.
The controls: Focus, Fuzz, Level and the mode switch
Four controls sit on the Hammerite-finished enclosure6:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Focus | Combines a gain boost and a frequency boost; the profile gets brighter and more searing as you turn it up5 |
| Fuzz | Impacts bias, gain and compression simultaneously5 |
| Level | Controls overall output1 |
| Mode | Three-way rotary switch selecting Boost / Drive / Fuzz5 |
Two things are worth knowing as a player. First, the Fuzz control only works in fuzz mode, so in boost or overdrive the gain is fixed3. Second, the Focus control keeps working in the non-fuzz modes, adding gain to the front of the circuit, and Guitar.com found it works well on all of them34.
Premier Guitar's reviewer praised the interplay of the controls, noting the output level differences between fuzz, drive and boost are pretty uniform, so quick mode switches on the fly will not fry ears with a level jump6. Karlsson went further: "It's the only fuzz I have - where you can turn down any two knobs out of the 3 and still get interesting outputs."5
Inside the hybrid germanium and silicon circuit
The Deluxe replaces the all-silicon circuitry of the standard Focus Fuzz with the mixed silicon and germanium transistors of the original 2023 limited edition3. A significant part of the fuzzy heart is a Soviet-era germanium transistor that is tricky to source6. The circuit is executed with precision on through-hole board6, and Premier Guitar noted the lovingly designed enclosure, robust pots and switches, and considerable heft6.
How the transistors are distributed across the circuits, per Guitar Pedal X5:
| Circuit | Transistors |
|---|---|
| Fuzz | 1 x MP38A germanium + 1 x BC107B silicon |
| Focus | 1 x BC107B |
| Boost and Overdrive | 1 x BC107B shared, plus 2 red LEDs for the overdrive |
| Octave / Overtone | 1 x BC107B + 1 x BC177B, blended into the core signal |
The fuzz circuit is "nigh identical" to the original Focus Fuzz's two-transistor hybrid core5, which itself reinvented the classic Fuzz Face with two silicon and one germanium transistor5. The octave's BC107B and BC177B pairing is what gives it what Karlsson called uniquely warm and musical harmonic octave overtones5.
From the Focus Fuzz to the 400-unit Deluxe
The original Focus Fuzz launched in March as a limited edition of 250 units, all soon sold out89. The limit was not marketing: Greeves only had enough parts for 250 units, with the MP38A germanium transistor particularly hard to get hold of5.
A follow-up, the Focus Fuzz Silicon, arrived in July 2023 as a darker, grittier and more affordable version built on the silicon side of the original circuit, using three low-gain silicon transistors, top-mounted jacks and an anodised aluminum faceplate with knobs for Fuzz, Level and Focus98. MusicRadar's later review of the Silicon called it "a new shade rather than a completely colour" of the original, a user-friendly fuzz that can perform all manner of gain and dirt functions on request8.
The Deluxe, launched in March 2025, goes back to the hybrid germanium formula. Greeves estimated he had enough NOS transistors for 400 units this time out16, and Premier Guitar noted it will remain a rare bird6. Guitar.com's Richard Purvis heard a difference from the original: "this one seems to have a bit more body in the lower mids, so it feels slightly more grounded and less frisky."3
What reviewers made of it
Reception was strong across the press. Guitar.com's 2026 fuzz buying guide named it the best combined fuzz and overdrive in its category2, and Guitar Pedal X gave it a Silver award in its 2025 fuzz roundup4. Premier Guitar's reviewer found the drive delicious with Fender single-coils and PAF humbuckers, easily cleaned up with guitar volume or picking intensity, and concluded it was hard to imagine adding more footswitches without sacrificing the pedal's elegance and proportions, and elevating the already considerable price6.
The Focus Fuzz Deluxe is a limited run of roughly 400 units, priced in pounds sterling at launch (£299, March 2025), and is expected to remain rare1652.

Questions
What transistor is in the Focus Fuzz Deluxe?
The fuzz circuit pairs a Soviet-era NOS germanium MP38A with a silicon BC107B. The Focus gain stage uses one BC107B, boost and overdrive share another BC107B (with two red LEDs added for overdrive), and the octave/overtone circuit uses a BC107B and a BC177B blended into the core signal.
Does the octave work in boost and overdrive modes?
Yes. Premier Guitar's reviewer confirmed the octave works with the fuzz, drive or boost, and Guitar Pedal X found it works beautifully with the boost and overdrive modes. Premier Guitar noted that adding the octave to a boosted signal with plenty of Focus yields funky, eccentric electric-sitar tones.
How is the Focus Fuzz Deluxe different from the original Focus Fuzz?
The 2023 original was a fuzz pedal limited to 250 units because its MP38A germanium transistors were hard to source. The Deluxe keeps that fuzz circuit, adds separate boost and overdrive circuits, a footswitchable octave-up, and a three-way mode switch, with about 400 units planned.
Does the Focus Fuzz Deluxe clean up with the guitar volume?
Yes. Premier Guitar's reviewer highlighted the fuzz's sensitivity to guitar volume and tone attenuation and touch dynamics, and found the drive sounds easily cleaned up with guitar volume or picking intensity.
How much current does the Focus Fuzz Deluxe draw?
It runs on 9V DC from a pedalboard power supply and draws around 10mA, according to MusicRadar. That is light enough for most isolated supplies, though it is a mains-style supply pedal rather than battery powered.
