The JHS Pedals EHX Triangle Big Muff Pi Illuminati Mod is a JHS Pedals take on the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff Pi, the early 1970s version of the classic fuzz circuit. Like other Big Muff variants, it layers transistor gain stages and a tone stack to produce a thick, saturated fuzz. The modification this page is named for centers on the one thing many players find limiting about the circuit: its midrange.
What it does
The stock Big Muff tone stack is famous for scooping out the midrange, which can leave the guitar sitting behind the band in a mix. The mod associated with this pedal adds a three-position mids switch to the tone stack, giving the player capacitor options that restore or reshape the mids instead of leaving them fixed at the stock scoop. As the independent technical site Guitar FX Layouts put it when documenting the same modification for the EHX 66 Triangle Big Muff circuit1:
"This is just a mod to get more options on the tonestack, as many people think that the BMP mids are too extremely"1
For a player, that means the pedal keeps the Triangle Big Muff's fuzz character while letting you dial in more midrange options, since many people think the Big Muff's mids are too extremely scooped1.
Only the tone stack modification itself is documented.
