The Keeley Realizer is a reverb pedal from Keeley Electronics built specifically for shoegaze and ambient guitarists1. It is a three-mode creative reverb, offering Soft Focus, Reverse, and Hall with ascending shimmer, all in one pedalboard-friendly enclosure1. The circuit is based on the left side of the Keeley Loomer Workstation, the reverb and modulation half of that two-sided pedal12.

Keeley introduced the Realizer Reverb as a limited release, with Robert Keeley describing it in unusually personal terms:

"The Realizer is like magic compared to what I was capable of years ago."

Three reverb modes built for shoegaze

The Realizer's three modes each trace back to a specific source, and two of them to the rack reverbs of the 1980s and early 1990s that shoegaze players used to build their washes of sound.

  • Soft Focus: a recreation of the Soft Focus patch from the Yamaha FX500 multi-effects processor, a late-1980s rack unit1. Keeley first developed its own Soft Focus reverb in 20183.
  • Reverse: inspired by what Delicious Audio called "the two most popular rack mount reverb effects of the 80's and 90's, the Yamaga SPX90 and the Alesis Midiverb" units1. Reverse mode also features an envelope-triggered vibrato that emulates the pitch bend from a Jazzmaster tremolo bar1.
  • Hall with ascending shimmer: hall reverb with an octave up, where the output of the reverb is fed into an octave up which then feeds back into the reverb input, creating an infinitely ascending octave feedback loop1.

The lineage runs through the Loomer, which MusicRadar's review described as carrying "a Hall patch, Soft Focus, which emulates the Yamaha FX500, and the main attraction - a reverse reverb built around a reversed delay line"4. MusicRadar's Alex Lynham likewise noted the Loomer's Hall patch, its FX500-emulating Soft Focus, and its reverse reverb built around a reversed delay line, plus expression control4.

The controls mode by mode

The Realizer's knobs change function depending on the mode selected, so the same panel serves three quite different effects.

ControlModeWhat it does
DECAYReverseSwitches between 8 fixed delay times, from 150ms up to a half second1
DEPTHReverseSets how deep the tremolo bar is pushed, controlling the envelope vibrato1
WARMTHReverseWorks like the Jazzmaster rhythm pickup tone control1
DECAYSoft FocusChanges both the decay time of the reverb and the feedback for the dual delay1
DEPTHHallChanges how noticeable the pitch effect is1
WARMTHAllControls the high frequencies5

In Reverse mode, the envelope-triggered vibrato emulates the pitch bend you get from pushing a Jazzmaster tremolo bar, and the DEPTH control sets how deep that virtual bar is pushed1. In Hall mode, the octave feedback loop is the main event, and DEPTH governs how audible the ascending pitch effect becomes1.

The Warmth knob is shared across the modes as a high-frequency control5, but in Reverse mode it takes on a specific character: it is designed to work like the tone control on a Jazzmaster's rhythm pickup, the darker of the two pickups on that guitar1.

For comparison, the Loomer's control panel, as reviewed by Guitar.com's Huw Price, included "Blend, decay, warmth, depth, filter, fuzz & level knobs, focus/reverse/hall & flat/full/scoop, order switches"6. In the Loomer's Focus mode, "The time is pre-set, but decay sets the number of repeats and depth contributes a swirly vibrato"6. The Loomer also offered expression control4, a feature the Realizer's panel shares through its own control set.

From the Loomer to the Realizer

The Realizer's circuit is drawn directly from the left side of the Loomer Workstation, the half of that pedal that held the reverb and modulation processing12. Where the Loomer paired that reverb side with a fuzz and filter drive side, the Realizer packages the reverb modes alone in a smaller, pedalboard-friendly enclosure1.

The Realizer has also appeared in special finishes. The Realizer Reverberator 21st Anniversary edition is "finished in a teal / purple flip flop finish, similar to the 2nd Anniversary Loomer," with minimal graphics and chrome knobs and switches2. Robert Keeley himself described the pedal's capabilities plainly: "The Realizer is like magic compared to what I was capable of years ago"3.

The Realizer's mode designs have shown up elsewhere in the Keeley lineup as well. Its Reverse mode "also features an envelope triggered vibrato that emulates the pitch bend from a Jazzmaster tremolo bar"1, an approach Keeley has continued to build on in later ambient pedals, while the Loomer's own expression control input1 points to the same player-configurable direction.

A later 21st Anniversary edition, the Realizer Reverberator, is finished in a teal and purple flip-flop finish with minimal graphics and chrome knobs and switches, similar to the 2nd Anniversary Loomer2.

Who built it

According to Robert Keeley, the Realizer Reverb was a team effort: Craighton Hale designed the circuit layout and board, Aaron Tackett crafted the code, and Robby Harris came up with the graphics3.

Questions

What is the Keeley Realizer based on?

The Realizer is based on the left side of the Keeley Loomer Workstation, which carried the reverb and modulation circuitry. Its three modes, Soft Focus, Reverse and Hall with ascending shimmer, were carried over from that pedal and packaged in a single pedalboard-friendly enclosure.

What does the Warmth knob do on the Realizer?

Warmth controls the high frequencies of the reverb. In Reverse mode it is designed to work like the tone control of a Jazzmaster rhythm pickup, rolling off top end for a darker, smoother wash of reverb.

What is Soft Focus mode on the Keeley Realizer?

Soft Focus is a recreation of the Soft Focus patch from the Yamaha FX500 multi-effects processor, a late-1980s rack unit. Keeley first developed its own Soft Focus reverb in 2018, and the Realizer's version pairs the reverb with a dual delay whose feedback is set by the Decay control.

What is the Pedal Partners Realizer?

A limited edition of the Realizer Reverb released in collaboration with Pedal Partners, a shoegazer YouTube channel, announced in March 2023. It appeared in a matte sparkle pink colorway with artwork by Luca from Pedal Partners.

Who designed the Keeley Realizer?

According to Robert Keeley, Craighton Hale designed the circuit layout and board, Aaron Tackett crafted the code, and Robby Harris came up with the graphics for the limited release Realizer Reverb.
