The Loe Sounds SuperFuzz is a boutique fuzz pedal, described by Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio as "A rippin' fuzz of the nastiest variety!" It is Aisha Loe's take on the classic Superfuzz circuit, with one significant change: instead of the original's mid-scoop switch, it carries a continuous Tone knob for maximum versatility1. The original design it draws on is the Voodoo Lab Superfuzz, which Voodoo Lab describes as taking "this classic fuzz design and adds tone and resonance circuits so you can dial up an amazing array of new" sounds2.

A Superfuzz with a Tone knob

The classic Superfuzz design is a two-knob fuzz, and Loe Sounds keeps that layout while reworking the tone shaping. Where the original offered a fixed mid-scoop switch, the SuperFuzz's Tone knob sweeps continuously, which De Gregorio says gives "maximum versatility"1. On the Voodoo Lab version of the circuit, the maker describes the tone control as delivering "a wide spectrum of midrange and bass timbres, everything from an extreme gain scooped tone through a raucous, bluesy, prominent mid voicing"3, and the Loe Sounds knob is intended to open up that same territory further.

The build leans on vintage-spec parts. The clipping comes from vintage glass germanium diodes, measured and matched to optimum specs, and the transistors are vintage units given the same matching treatment, with silver mica capacitors elsewhere in the circuit1. For players who like to tinker, the diode choice matters: the Guitar FX Layouts technical write-up of the circuit notes that "Different diodes will clip differently, and therefore sound different. Experimentation is the name of the game here!"4.

The controls

The pedal's gain stage is handled by the Expander knob. De Gregorio describes it as having "a more usable gain range through the Expander (gain) knob, that can take you from overdrive territory all the way to the" circuit's signature fuzz apocalypse1. That means the same knob covers everything from a mild pushed overdrive, the kind of territory covered by overdrive pedals, up to full saturated fuzz.

For comparison, the Voodoo Lab Superfuzz's control set shows how the classic circuit is laid out3:

ControlWhat it does
ATTACKThe gain control. Turning it up provides additional sustain and buzz.
TONEAffects mostly the midrange frequencies. 12:00 for classic fuzz, down for a modern scooped tone, up for a prominent, bluesy midrange voicing.
VOLUMESets the output level.

The Loe Sounds SuperFuzz follows the same broad shape, with its Expander as the gain control and its Tone knob standing in for the original's mid-scoop switch1.

Guitar, bass and shipping

The SuperFuzz is aimed at more than one instrument. De Gregorio writes that "This version of the classic Superfuzz circuit performs equally well for guitar, bass, or whatever else you wanna run through it," and his demo video puts the pedal through several guitars and also a bass1. That makes it relevant to players browsing bass pedals as well as guitarists.

Shipping is US-focused: free within the continental US, but only via USPS Priority, Insured. International shipping is available by inquiry1.

Loe Sounds builds other takes on classic fuzz circuits too, including the Loe Sounds Germanium Blow, the Loe Sounds BLow Hybrid Fuzz, the Loe Sounds She Fuzz and the Loe Sounds Cha'Cha Russian Muff Fuzz.

Questions

Does the Loe Sounds SuperFuzz work with bass?

Yes. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio describes this version of the classic Superfuzz circuit as performing equally well for guitar, bass, or whatever else you want to run through it, and his demo video puts the pedal through several guitars and also a bass.

Does the Loe Sounds SuperFuzz use germanium diodes?

It does. The pedal is built with vintage glass germanium diodes, measured and matched to optimum specs, along with vintage transistors that are also measured and matched, and silver mica capacitors.

What does the Tone knob replace on the original Superfuzz?

On the original Superfuzz design, a mid-scoop switch handles the tone shaping. Loe Sounds replaces that switch with a continuous Tone knob, which the maker says is for maximum versatility, letting you dial the midrange anywhere between scooped and prominent instead of choosing one fixed setting.

Does Loe Sounds ship the SuperFuzz outside the US?

International shipping is by inquiry. Within the continental US, shipping is free, but the pedal ships only via USPS Priority, Insured.

What size enclosure does the Loe Sounds SuperFuzz use?

The SuperFuzz is housed in a powder-coated 125b-sized aluminum enclosure, with a Lumberg power jack and a Vimex footswitch.
