The Mission Engineering EQD-1 is an expression pedal made by Mission Engineering and built to the specifications of EarthQuaker Devices, the effects maker. Announced in July 2023, it is designed to sweep the expression and control-voltage parameters of EarthQuaker Devices pedals, and of plenty of other gear besides. It was priced at $175.00 USD and described as available from select Mission Engineering dealers at announcement1.

What it does

An expression pedal lets a player rock a treadle to control a parameter on a pedal or other device in real time: the speed of a delay's repeats, the depth of a modulation effect, the amount of drive. The EQD-1 is built for that job with EarthQuaker Devices pedals specifically in mind. Mission Engineering, working to Jamie Stillman's specs, gave it selectable outputs so it can be matched to the pedal it is driving1.

The selectable outputs are the heart of the design. Different pedals expect different expression pedal values, and a mismatch can make the sweep feel wrong or only cover part of the range. The EQD-1 offers a 25K output, a 100K output and a +5V CV (control voltage) output, so one pedal can be set to suit the device it is connected to1.

Compatibility

  • All EarthQuaker Devices pedals, via the selectable outputs1
  • The 25K output is described as perfect for the Sunn O))) Life Pedal, Avalanche Run and Rainbow Machine1
  • Many other brands of effects pedals1
  • MIDI controllers and keyboards1

The 25K output is the one EarthQuaker Devices points to for the Sunn O))) Life Pedal, the Avalanche Run and the Rainbow Machine. If you are using the pedal with other gear, the 100K and +5V CV outputs are the alternatives to try1.

Context in Mission Engineering's range

Mission Engineering has a long history of expression pedals, many made in partnership with specific makers: the SP-H9 for Eventide's H9, the SP1-L6H for the Line 6 Helix Rack, and the multi-pedal Expressionator controller, among others. The EQD-1 follows the same idea of a maker-specific expression pedal, this time for EarthQuaker Devices. Other Mission Engineering expression pedals include the EP-1, the EP-11 and the SP-H9.
