The MIDI Delaytion by Molten Voltage is a programmable analog delay controller: a foot controller that adds MIDI control, MIDI Clock synchronization and 128 program storage to a modified analog delay pedal rather than processing audio itself. Molten Voltage designed it around the MXR Carbon Copy and Malekko Ekko 616 delays, and it adds Modulation Rate and Depth controls on top of the delay time control12. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as controlling modified MXR Carbon Copy and Malekko Ekko 616 delays3.
What it does
The MIDI Delaytion's job is to bring a delay pedal that has no MIDI input under MIDI control. Its owner's manual describes it as "a programmable Analog Delay Controller, designed to control the MXR Carbon Copy, Malekko Ekko 616, and" modified delays, and lists its two operating approaches as "MIDI Clock Synchronization ~ or ~ Manual Delay Time Control"2. In practice that means a player can either let the delay time follow a MIDI Clock tempo from a master controller, or set it by hand.
The MIDI Delaytion is designed to work alongside Molten Voltage's other control products. Players building a larger setup can look at the Molten Voltage MASTER CONTROL MV-58B or the MASTER CONTROL, and Molten Voltage's own Starship Kaom MIDI pedalboard is built around devices like these.
MIDI and jacks
The manual lays out the unit's MIDI behavior and connections as follows2:
- MIDI IN jack: receives incoming MIDI messages.
- MIDI THRU jack: "repeats all MIDI messages received at the input, irrespective of MIDI Channel," so other MIDI gear can be daisy-chained after it.
- MIDI Channel: responds to Program Change on MIDI Channel 1 or 15.
- Clock messages: responds to MIDI Start, Stop, and Clock.
- System Exclusive: responds to Molten Voltage self-program SysEx commands.
- CLOCK OUT jack (RCA): "Connect a standard RCA cable to the CLOCK OUT Jack. Connect the other end to the Modified Analog Delay." This RCA connection is what carries the tempo signal to the delay pedal.
- MIDI/Pot Select Switch: selects MIDI or Pot delay time control; the "up" position corresponds to MIDI, down to Pot.
The CLOCK OUT connection requires a modified delay pedal. Molten Voltage publishes details of the analog delay modifications the MIDI Delaytion works with, and lists the MIDI Delaytion at $165 USD on that page4.
Power and support
The manual calls for a "9 volt, 2.1mm, 100mA minimum, tip negative DC Power supply" into the DC9V power jack2, and RockBoard's PedalPedia lists 9V DC center negative with a 100mA current draw3. The documented firmware version is v 1.02. Molten Voltage warrants the unit for two years from the date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, requiring an approved power supply and proof of purchase; user repair attempts void the warranty. The manual directs questions to questions@MoltenVoltage.com and repairs to Service@MoltenVoltage.com2.

Questions
Is the Molten Voltage MIDI Delaytion analog or digital?
RockBoard's PedalPedia lists the MIDI Delaytion as having an analog circuit type. It is a controller rather than a delay effect itself: it sits alongside a modified analog delay pedal, such as an MXR Carbon Copy or Malekko Ekko 616, and sends it clock and control signals while the audio stays in the delay pedal.
Does the MIDI Delaytion sync to MIDI Clock?
Yes. The owner's manual lists MIDI Clock synchronization or manual delay time control as its two operating approaches. Molten Voltage says it can sync the delay time to MIDI Clock with three different tap ratios, or set the delay time independently for fast slapback and chorus sounds. It responds to MIDI Start, Stop and Clock messages.
How many presets does the MIDI Delaytion store?
The MIDI Delaytion stores 128 presets, according to Molten Voltage's product pages, which also describe the unit as featuring MIDI Clock synchronization, modulation, and 128 program storage.
What power supply does the MIDI Delaytion need?
The manual calls for a 9 volt, 2.1mm, 100mA minimum, tip negative DC power supply plugged into the DC9V power jack. RockBoard's PedalPedia likewise lists 9V DC, center negative, with a 100mA current draw.
Which delay pedals does the MIDI Delaytion control?
The owner's manual describes the MIDI Delaytion as a programmable Analog Delay Controller designed to control the MXR Carbon Copy and Malekko Ekko 616, and RockBoard's PedalPedia notes it controls modified versions of those two pedals. Molten Voltage also published details of the analog delay modifications the controller works with.
