The Mooer D7 X2 is a dual footswitch stereo delay pedal from Mooer Audio, an expanded version of the company's popular D7 mini multi-delay. Where the original D7 packed 7 delay algorithms into a micro-series enclosure, the D7 X2 more than doubles that to 14 built-in delay effects and adds stereo inputs and outputs12.

The effects range widely. Delicious Audio describes them as running "from classic analog and tape delays to more modern and experimental" types such as Low-Bit, Galaxy and PingPong2. MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley noted the lineup includes digital emulations of old-school tape echo and analog delays, modulation, a step-phaser, a fuzz effect on the repeats, and a Rainbow delay that lets you play with the stutter speed and add pitch-shifting warble to the repeats3.

What the D7 X2 does

Mooer announced the D7 X2 in August 2021 as part of its updated X2 Series, alongside the R7 X2 reverb4. It was the first pedal to get the X2 treatment2. The concept is straightforward: take the format of the mini D7 and expand it inside a compact case, with twice as many effects, stereo connections and a second footswitch2.

Gearnews' Julian Schmauch summed up the appeal in the site's best delay pedals guide: "The Mooer D7 X2 Delay brings loads of flexibility into a compact package," with 14 delay modes, tap tempo, true stereo I/O and the ability to save presets for each effect so favorite sounds can be recalled mid-gig5.

The delay effects cover the ground most players reach for first, plus sounds further out:

  • Classic analog and tape delay emulations2
  • Modern and experimental types including Low-Bit, Galaxy and PingPong2
  • Modulation and a step-phaser3
  • A fuzz effect on the repeats3
  • Rainbow delay, with stutter speed control and pitch-shifting warble on the repeats3

Controls and footswitches

The control surface keeps the 5 knob layout of the original D7: Mix, Time and Feedback knobs work alongside the two Tweak controls67.

ControlWhat it does
TIMESets the timing of each delay; can also be set with the TAP TEMPO footswitch1
Mix, Time, FeedbackThe core delay controls, as on the original D76
Tweak 1Mode dependent parameter, function changes with the selected delay27
Tweak 2Mode dependent parameter, function changes with the selected delay27

The Tweak knobs are the pedal's wildcard. Delicious Audio explains that "adjustable parameters are different based on each effect and can be customized with the Tweak 1 and Tweak 2 knobs"2. Guitar.com's Cillian Breathnach gives concrete examples: depending on the chosen delay effect, they can adjust modulation depth and rate, or bitrate reduction6. Guitar World called the result "a pretty comprehensive control layout"7.

The two footswitches allow for easier preset navigation, while the left footswitch doubles as a Tap Tempo trigger2. Gearnews describes the additional footswitch as designed for tap tempo or infinite sustain functions as well as selecting the presets4. An LED above the Tap footswitch indicates the tap tempo speed3.

Each of the 14 modes can be stored as a favorite mode and recalled as a preset, and the 7 preset system is identical to the predecessor's2.

Stereo connections

The D7 X2 offers full stereo operation3, with two 1/4" mono input jacks (1M ohms) and two 1/4" mono output jacks (510 ohms)1. This is one of the clearest differences from the original mono D7, and it means the pedal can sit in a stereo rig or feed two amps while the delay effects spread across the field.

How it differs from the D7

The original D7 Delay was announced at NAMM in January 2020 as part of Mooer's Micro Series, housing 6 customizable digital delay effects8. By the time of its own coverage, Delicious Audio counted 7 delay algorithms in the mini D72. Either way, the D7 X2 more than doubles the count at 14 modes12.

Mooer's own product page puts the relationship plainly: the D7 X2 "features more than double the effects of its skinnier brother, the D7 Delay, while also adding stereo inputs" and outputs1. What carries over is the 5 knob layout and the 7 preset system2. What is new, beyond the effects and stereo I/O, is the second footswitch for tap tempo, infinite sustain and preset selection4.

"The new Mooer D7 x2 Stereo Delay takes the format of their popular D7 mini-multi-delay and expands it inside a compact case, gifting it with twice as many ins/outs, modes and footswitches, and a few other features."
Delicious Audio2

For players weighing the two, the choice comes down to whether the extra modes, stereo connections and tap tempo footswitch matter for the board. A mono micro-format pedal with fewer algorithms covers the basics; the X2 is the version for players who want the full menu in one compact box239.

Questions

How many delay modes does the Mooer D7 X2 have?

The D7 X2 has 14 built-in delay modes, more than double the count of the original D7. They range from classic analog and tape delay emulations to modern and experimental types such as Low-Bit, Galaxy and PingPong, plus a Rainbow delay with pitch-shifting warble on the repeats.

Does the Mooer D7 X2 have tap tempo?

Yes. The left footswitch doubles as a tap tempo trigger, so you can set the delay time by tapping in time with the music. An LED above the Tap footswitch blinks to indicate the tap tempo speed, and the TIME knob offers an alternative way to set the timing.

Is the Mooer D7 X2 stereo?

Yes. The D7 X2 has full stereo operation, with two 1/4 inch mono input jacks and two 1/4 inch mono output jacks. This is one of the main upgrades over the original mono D7, alongside the extra footswitch and the larger effects count.

How many presets can the D7 X2 store?

The D7 X2 uses a 7 preset system, the same as its predecessor. Each of the 14 delay modes can be stored as a favorite mode and recalled as a preset, and the second footswitch helps with selecting the presets mid-gig.

What is the difference between the Mooer D7 and D7 X2?

The D7 X2 is an expanded version of the mini D7. It more than doubles the effects count from 7 delay algorithms to 14, adds stereo inputs and outputs, and adds a second footswitch for tap tempo, infinite sustain and preset selection. The 5 knob layout and 7 preset system carry over unchanged.

What do the Tweak knobs do on the D7 X2?

Tweak 1 and Tweak 2 are mode dependent controls. Their function changes depending on which of the 14 delay effects is selected, covering parameters such as modulation depth and rate or bitrate reduction. They sit alongside the Mix, Time and Feedback knobs.
