The Mr. Black Deuce Coupe is a compact analog overdrive pedal with a built-in boost, designed by Jack Deville and first released in late 20111. It runs two channels in one box: a Drive channel that Mr. Black describes as an "incredibly dynamic natural and organic overdrive," and an Ultra channel that stacks gain on top for pushing an amp harder1. The pedal was discontinued after its original run, then returned twelve years later as the MKII in December 2023 with new switching and an externalized boost control2.

Mr. Black calls the Deuce Coupe a naturally responsive overdrive and boost, built around a 100% pure-analog, high-headroom signal path1. When the MKII arrived, MusicRadar reported Mr. Black calling it "one of the most responsive and dynamic overdrive circuits ever created"2.

What the Deuce Coupe does

The Deuce Coupe is an overdrive pedal with a separate boost stage, aimed at players who want one box to cover both jobs. Mr. Black says the pedal's internal split-rail power supply gives it "incredible dynamic content and detail," running at +/- 9V internally from an ordinary 9V supply1. MusicRadar attributed this dynamic response to that same specially designed internal split-rail power supply, noting you just feed it 9V from a pedalboard supply or a battery2.

Delicious Audio's reviewer found the MKII responds to the player rather than fighting them3:

"It responds perfectly to your picking dynamics and volume knob, delivering everything from a clean boost to a detailed, articulate drive without ever sounding choked or artificial."3

Two channels: Drive and Ultra

The pedal's two channels are where its gain lives. Mr. Black rates them as follows1:

ChannelGain range
Drive channel+1dB to +40.8dB
Ultra channel+1.8dB to +56.5dB

At maximum settings, the maker says the Deuce Coupe will output over +56dB gain1. The Ultra channel is the second stage: MusicRadar described the MKII's Ultra Boost as an independent feature with its own dial and footswitch, and called it "a pure clean boost"2. Delicious Audio went further, calling the MKII's boost "a powerhouse in its own right, capable of adding over +56dB of volume to push your amp into saturation"3.

The pedal's frequency response runs from about 15.92Hz to about 6.66KHz1.

The controls and footswitches

The current Deuce Coupe keeps things simple on the surface. Three knobs, Gain, Tone and Volume, handle the overdrive circuit, which Mr. Black describes as three familiar and intuitive controls complementing the circuit12. The MKII's big functional change is that the Ultra Boost moved outside the box:

  • Gain, Tone, Volume: the three knobs for the Drive channel2
  • Ultra Boost dial: an external level control for the boost, adjustable on the fly1
  • Drive footswitch: soft-touch, engages the overdrive1
  • Ultra Boost footswitch: soft-touch, engages the boost independently13

MusicRadar noted the MKII has an independent Ultra Boost feature with its own dial and footswitch, and Delicious Audio highlighted the two soft-touch footswitches for independent control of the drive and the newly external Ultra Boost23. The maker says the external Ultra Boost control can now be adjusted on the fly, complementing direct access to the Ultra channel4.

Power: 9V with internal split-rail operation

The Deuce Coupe runs on a standard 9V DC supply with a 2.1mm negative center-pin plug, drawing about 22mA1. Inside, an internal split-rail power supply converts that to +/- 9V rails, which Mr. Black credits for the pedal's dynamic content and detail1. MusicRadar confirmed the MKII can also run from a battery2.

History and versions, from the original to the MKII

The Deuce Coupe's timeline spans more than a decade24:

VersionWhenWhat changed
Original Deuce CoupeLate 2011Jack Deville's compact overdrive, a cult classic1
MKII / reissueDecember 2023Two soft-touch footswitches, external Ultra Boost control, Click-Less true-bypass24
Old School Laser editionCurrentThe original circuit in a laser-engraved genuine Hammond enclosure1

The original pedal was released in late 2011, and Mr. Black says it "shattered what was to be expected in a compact overdrive pedal"1. At the time, the company's pedals went under the name Jack Deville Electronics, as MusicRadar noted when covering the MKII's return2. Delicious Audio called the original a true cult classic, and the reborn Deuce Coupe "a modern classic that stands alone"3.

The MKII arrived twelve years after the original, in December 2023, reviving the circuit with soft-touch switching and the externalized Ultra Boost2. The Old School Laser edition sold today is the classic, original Deuce Coupe circuit in a special old-school laser engraved genuine Hammond enclosure1.

The Deuce Coupe is custom made and built to order, and Mr. Black states all sales are final1.

B-stock pedals

Mr. Black also sells B-stock Deuce Coupe units at a lower price: $199.95 regular, $149.95 on sale (October 2026)4. B-stock units have minor cosmetic defects only, and the internal components are the same as a standard pedal4. They carry the standard 1-year Mr. Black warranty, but all B-stock sales are final, with no returns, exchanges, or refunds4.

Questions

Is the Mr. Black Deuce Coupe true bypass?

Yes. The current Deuce Coupe uses Mr. Black's Click-Less relay true-bypass switching, which the maker describes as modernized for the reissue. MusicRadar also confirmed Click-Less true-bypass switching on the MKII when it returned in December 2023.

How much gain does the Deuce Coupe Ultra channel add?

Mr. Black rates the Ultra channel from +1.8dB to +56.5dB. The Drive channel adds +1dB to +40.8dB, and at maximum settings the pedal will output over +56dB gain. Delicious Audio described the MKII's Ultra Boost as capable of adding over +56dB of volume.

What is the difference between the original Deuce Coupe and the MKII?

The original launched in late 2011 under Jack Deville Electronics and became a cult classic before being discontinued. The MKII returned twelve years later, in December 2023, with two soft-touch footswitches, an external Ultra Boost control, and Click-Less true-bypass switching.

Can the Deuce Coupe be used as a clean boost?

Yes. MusicRadar describes the Ultra Boost as a pure clean boost with its own dial and footswitch, and Delicious Audio found the pedal delivers everything from a clean boost to detailed drive while responding to picking dynamics and the volume knob.

What are Mr. Black B-stock pedals?

B-stock units have minor cosmetic defects only; the internal components are the same as a standard pedal. They carry the standard 1-year Mr. Black warranty, but all B-stock sales are final, with no returns, exchanges, or refunds.
