The Nordvang Custom Gravity v2.5 is a dual overdrive pedal from the Danish maker Nordvang Custom, built as two favorite overdrive circuits in one enclosure: a K-style circuit and a TS10-style circuit. Nordvang describes it as specializing in mid push, giving a player the ability to cut through the mix in any situation1. It sits in the same family as the maker's Nordvang Custom '83 Drive v2.5, another dual overdrive built around two classic circuits2.

Where the design comes from

Nordvang Custom says the inspiration for the pedal lies in its name, Gravity, and in the later live lead tones of John Mayer, in particular the outro solo tone in "Gravity" and the intro in "Belief"1. The maker's page for the related '83 Drive notes that both source pedals behind these designs have played an important part in Mayer's live guitar tones through the years, as the pre drive he stacks into his TS10 to obtain his lead tone2.

To keep the two circuits behaving as they did in their original forms, Nordvang says it kept both buffers from the original designs in order to replicate the exact interaction between the two circuits1.

The controls and clipping options

The Gravity's front panel carries a three position toggle switch labeled LOWS. Nordvang says the LOWS switch changes the bass response of the circuit1.

The TS10 side (side A) is built around an RC4558 operational amplifier and uses original Toshiba 1s1588 silicon diodes, the same diodes as the original Japanese-made TS101. The TS side also offers selectable clipping configurations:

  • 2-diode symmetrical, the stock option
  • 3-diode asymmetrical
  • 4-diode symmetrical, added in v2.5

Nordvang describes the v2.5 change as giving players, besides the 2-diode symmetrical (stock) and 3-diode asymmetrical options, "a 4-diode symmetrical clipping option" on the TS side1.

The v2.5 clipping addition applies to the TS side of the pedal. Earlier versions of the Gravity do not have the 4-diode symmetrical option1.

Power and connections: serial and TRS split modes

The Gravity requires a regulated 9-volt DC power supply with a standard 2.1mm jack, tip negative polarity, and its maximum power consumption is 100mA at +9VDC1. Nordvang states plainly that the Gravity does not support battery operation1, so a battery-powered setup is out and a pedalboard power supply with enough current headroom is required.

The two sides can be wired up in more than one way:

  • Serial mode: the two sides run one into the other, either A into B (A->B) or B into A (A<-B), so you choose which circuit comes first in the chain1.
  • TRS split mode: the Gravity V2 can split side A and side B into separate inputs and outputs, each side getting its own IN+OUT jack, so the two circuits can live apart in your signal chain or on a loop switcher1.

Nordvang describes this flexibility as being available "besides using the two sides of Gravity in serial mode, either A->B or A<-B"1. The related '83 Drive v2.5 offers a similar idea, with both sides usable separately or stacked2.
