The TC Electronic Skysurfer is a compact reverb pedal from TC Electronic, first released in 2016 to give players quality reverb tones at an affordable price1. It carries three onboard studio-grade reverb algorithms in a sturdy metal chassis, with dedicated Input and Output jacks and true bypass switching2. TC Electronic describes it as providing "all the lush, transparent reverb sounds you could ever dream of, without compromising your original tone"2.
The pedal's algorithms are modeled after TC's studio rack reverb units, which Guitar World's budget reverb buying guide called "seriously high-quality algorithms for relatively little money"3. In 2021 TC Electronic scaled the design down further with the Skysurfer Mini, a smaller and even more affordable version with the same three-algorithm approach14.
The controls: Reverb, Mix, Tone and the three-way switch
The Skysurfer keeps its control set simple: three knobs and a three-way mode switch3. Each knob handles one job, so a beginner can dial in a usable reverb quickly.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reverb | Controls the decay of the effect2 |
| Mix | Controls the ratio of wet to dry signal2 |
| Tone | Sets the amount of high-end content in your signal2 |
| Three-way switch | Selects the reverb type3 |
The Reverb knob sets how long the tail hangs in the air, while Mix balances your clean guitar against the processed signal. Tone shapes the brightness of the reverb itself: Gearnews, describing the equivalent control on the Skysurfer Mini, says it "lets you add a little extra sparkle in the top end"6, and Guitar.com calls it a way to "dial in saturated high-frequency content for sparkling tones"1. Guitar World also notes that the Mini's Tone pot lets players tailor the reverb's decay to suit the pedal's input4.
Spring, Room and Hall modes
The full-sized Skysurfer offers three reverb flavors selected by the onboard switch: Spring, Room and Hall2. Guitar World's buying guide lists the modes as spring, slate and hall3. Spring gives the drippy, splashy character of an old-school reverb tank, in the maker's words, "which is great for a full-on Dick Dale-style" surf sound2.
- Spring gives "the drippy, splashy goodness of an old-school reverb tank," in TC Electronic's words, suited to surf-style playing2. On the Mini, Guitar World says Spring "aims to recreate the 'drip and splash' of spring reverbs found in vintage tube amps"4.
- Room sits between the other two on the full-sized pedal2.
- Hall is the spacious option. Premier Guitar's news coverage of the Mini says Hall "covers a full range of tones from earthy and organic to full-on interstellar spaceflight"7.
The Skysurfer Mini uses a slightly different set: spring, plate and hall, selected by a mini-toggle switch. Guitar World's review says Plate "mimics classic studio reverbs"4, and MusicRadar describes the three as TC-designed algorithms offering "studio-grade hall, plate and spring reverbs at the touch of a three-way toggle switch"8.
On the Mini, Premier Guitar's reviewer found the modes hold up in use: "It sounds reasonably realistic to expansive in all modes," and "each reverb mode, including the spring, has personality and can be extremely effective and offer cool creative options when used right"9.
The Skysurfer and the Skysurfer Mini
The Skysurfer Mini arrived in 2021 as a scaled-down version of the full-sized pedal918. Premier Guitar describes it as "this tiny 3.9\" x 2.2\" x 2.2\" metal box"9, housed in what Delicious Audio calls a compact, rugged metal enclosure10. Where the two versions differ:
| Skysurfer | Skysurfer Mini | |
|---|---|---|
| Modes | Spring, Room, Hall2 | Spring, Plate, Hall9 |
| Power | 9V battery or POWERPLUG 9V adapter2 | 9V DC center-negative jack96 |
| Jacks | Dedicated Input and Output2 | Mono input and output, top-mounted96 |
| Footprint | Full-sized pedal | 3.9 x 2.2 x 2.2 inches9 |
The Mini's top-mounted jacks allow for flush pedalboard mounting, a practical benefit for tight boards4. Both versions use true bypass switching24.
What reviewers said
Guitar World's budget reverb buying guide gave the Skysurfer four and a half stars for usability, sounds and overall, praising its rugged construction while noting that higher settings wash out the dry signal3. In JHS Pedals' "70 Pedals That Don't Suck" feature, Josh Scott highlighted its value at $53 and its spring character:
"I like using it in kind of a washed-out, spring sounding reverb. It's just a beautiful sound."

Questions
Is the TC Electronic Skysurfer true bypass?
Yes. TC Electronic lists true bypass switching on the full-sized Skysurfer Reverb, and press coverage of the Skysurfer Mini also reports true bypass switching. With the pedal off, your dry signal passes through without the circuit coloring it.
Does the Skysurfer run on a 9V battery?
The full-sized Skysurfer Reverb does. TC Electronic says you can power it with a 9V battery or the POWERPLUG 9V adapter. The Skysurfer Mini is different: it draws power from a 9V center-negative jack on the top of the pedal, with no battery option reported.
Is the Skysurfer stereo?
No. The full-sized pedal has a dedicated Input and a dedicated Output, and Premier Guitar's review of the Skysurfer Mini describes mono input and output jacks. Neither version is reported as stereo.
What power supply does the Skysurfer use?
The full-sized Skysurfer Reverb runs on a 9V battery or TC Electronic's POWERPLUG 9V adapter. The Skysurfer Mini runs from a standard 9V DC center-negative power supply, according to Gearnews and Premier Guitar.
