The Tech 21 SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver is a bass preamp and DI built around Tech 21's SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation, an all-analog circuit that Tech 21 says encompasses the entire signal chain, from preamp to power amp1. It is a three-channel, programmable "rig-in-a-box" for bassists: you get three footswitch-accessed presets, each holding a full knob setting, so one pedal can carry a clean tone, a driven tone, and something in between1.

Guitar World's reviewer, Connor Flys, described it as "the original, bombproof, do-it-all bass preamp, with an iconic and oft-imitated sound, in programmable multi-preset form"2. It descends from the single-channel Bass Driver DI, and Tech 21 says the all-analog circuitry carries the same controls as that predecessor, with digital circuitry used only for the programmability1.

A programmable bass preamp and DI

The core idea is a direct-in box you can take anywhere. Tech 21's pitch is blunt: "Bounce into any studio with a Programmable Bass Driver DI and plug directly into the board"1. Because it is a preamp and DI rather than a plain stompbox, it can sit at the end of your pedalboard and feed a console or interface directly, with the SansAmp emulation standing in for an amp.

The programmable part works by saving knob positions to a channel. In Tech 21's words, "you just tweak the knobs until you find a tone, double-tap on a footswitch, and it's saved in that channel"1. Three channels means three complete tones, each recalled with a footswitch tap rather than bending down to re-dial knobs between songs.

The control set is the same six knobs as the single-channel Bass Driver DI1:

ControlFunction
DriveSets the amount of SansAmp tube-emulated drive
BassLow-frequency EQ
TrebleHigh-frequency EQ
PresenceUpper-mid bite and definition
BlendMixes the direct signal with the SansAmp-processed signal
LevelOutput volume

The Blend control is worth noting for bassists: mixing the clean direct signal back in keeps your fundamental low end intact while the driven side adds grind, a common approach on bass overdrive and preamp pedals. The enclosure is roadworthy all-metal construction, and Tech 21 notes each unit weighs 25 oz1.

Power and connections

The Programmable Bass Driver is flexible about power, which matters for a DI meant to travel1:

  • A 9V alkaline battery, not included with the unit
  • An optional Tech 21 model DC9 power supply
  • The former Tech 21 DC2 and DC4 supply models
  • Phantom power from a console

Phantom power operation means the unit can be powered straight from a mixing desk's XLR supply, so a bassist going direct to the board does not need to carry a wall adapter at all1.

Physically it measures 7.25" long by 5.25" wide by 2.25" high, so it is a larger floor unit rather than a compact stompbox, in line with its role as a DI and preamp rather than a simple effect1.

The ELITE variant

In January 2026, Tech 21 extended the design into digital territory with the SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver ELITE, a digital bass preamp and effects pedal that Bass Magazine and Bass Musician Magazine both describe as bringing the Programmable Bass Driver "into the digital domain"34.

The ELITE's lineage runs through Tech 21 founder and inventor Andrew Barta's digital work. Bass Magazine reports that Barta "wouldn't 'go digital' until he found a way to replicate the dynamics, responsiveness and fluidity of its analog counterpart," and that the ELITE uses the same technology as the Marty Friedman Signature SansAmp, built on Barta's digital replication of analog dynamics45. The original SansAmp itself, Bass Magazine notes, was Barta's "personal mission to encapsulate tube amplifier sounds in a compact, portable pedal"4.

The ELITE expands the feature set well beyond the analog version34:

  • Drive, Presence, Blend, Compressor, 3-band active EQ, and Level controls
  • Pre-programmed Chorus and/or Filter effects that can be activated from the pedal
  • A chromatic tuner
  • An effects loop
  • 1/4-inch and XLR outputs
  • Rugged all-metal housing
  • An included Tech 21 MIDI Driver, a universal interface with 3.5mm Type A MIDI cables

It also has two modes: Performance mode keeps your 3 main presets at the ready, while Studio mode offers up to 128 locations for custom presets35. That is a big step up from the analog version's three channels.

The ELITE measures 7.5" long by 5.25" wide by 2.0" high, slightly longer and slightly lower than the analog unit, and is designed and manufactured by Tech 21 USA, Inc.4. Unlike the analog version, it ships with an included 9V DC auto-switching power supply with interchangeable international plugs for use anywhere in the world4.

For a player weighing the two, the choice comes down to analog simplicity against the ELITE's compressor, EQ, effects, tuner, and deep preset storage. Both keep the direct-to-board DI role that defines the Bass Driver line431.

Questions

Does the SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver run on a battery?

Yes. Tech 21 states it is operable with a 9V alkaline battery, which is not included with the unit. It can also run on an optional Tech 21 DC9 power supply, on the former DC2 and DC4 models, or on phantom power from a mixing console.

Can the Bass Driver use phantom power?

Yes. Tech 21 lists the SansAmp Bass Driver DI Programmable as operable via phantom power, so it can be powered from a mixing console's XLR supply. That makes it practical for direct-to-board studio and live work without a separate adapter.

Does it have an XLR output?

The analog SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver is a DI designed to plug directly into a studio or live board. The ELITE version is explicitly listed with both 1/4-inch and XLR outputs, alongside a chromatic tuner and an effects loop.

What power supply does the Programmable Bass Driver use?

The analog version uses an optional Tech 21 model DC9 supply, and also works with the former DC2 and DC4 models, a 9V alkaline battery, or phantom power. The ELITE ships with an included 9V DC auto-switching supply with interchangeable international plugs.

How much does the Programmable Bass Driver cost?

Guitar World listed the Tech 21 SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver at $269 in the US, with a UK price of £249, in its 2026 review coverage. Prices can change over time, so treat these as the published figures from that date.

What is the difference between the Bass Driver and the ELITE?

The original Programmable Bass Driver is all-analog, with digital circuitry only for saving its three presets. The ELITE is a digital bass preamp and effects pedal that adds a compressor, 3-band active EQ, chorus and filter effects, a tuner, an effects loop, MIDI, and up to 128 preset locations in Studio mode.
