The SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver ELITE is a programmable bass preamp pedal with effects and DI outputs from Tech 21, announced in January 20261. It takes the company's long-running SansAmp Bass Driver concept into the digital domain: instead of the all-analog circuitry of the earlier SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver DI, the ELITE uses digital amp, IR, effects and EQ processing1. For a bassist, that means one box that shapes your core tone, adds pre-programmed Chorus and Filter effects1, and feeds both an amp and a mixing desk.
The ELITE is a variant of the SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver, and Tech 21 frames it as the payoff of founder Andrew Barta's long-running effort to move the SansAmp approach to digital. Bass Magazine's Jon D'Auria reports that Barta wouldn't "go digital" until he found a way to replicate the dynamics, responsiveness and fluidity of the analog counterpart2. The same technology appeared first in the Marty Friedman Signature SansAmp3.
The controls and modes
The ELITE has two modes: Performance mode and Studio mode31. Performance mode keeps your 3 main presets at the ready for gigging, while Studio mode opens up to 128 locations for custom presets31. The MIDI interface enables deep editing of parameters for amplifiers, blendable IRs, effects and EQ1, and the box ships with Tech 21's MIDI Driver, a high performance universal interface with 3.5mm Type A MIDI cables3.
In its standard mode, the controls cover Drive, Presence, Blend, Compressor, a 3-band active EQ, and Level12. Tech 21's own descriptions of two of them:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| DRIVE | Adjusts the overall amount of gain and overdrive3 |
| PREAMP (Red Zone) | Adjusts the signal level going into the input section of the SansAmp3 |
| BLEND | Mixes the amount of your direct bass signal with the SansAmp circuitry3 |
| Presence, Compressor, 3-band active EQ, Level | Standard-mode controls alongside Drive and Blend12 |
There is also a "Red" mode that switches the functionality of the controls to Preamp, Filter, Frequency, Q, Ambiance, Ratio and Chorus2. This is where the pedal's effects live: it can activate pre-programmed Chorus and/or Filter effects1, and the Red-mode knobs give you the filter and chorus parameters to shape them.
Other features include a chromatic tuner, an effect loop, 1/4-inch and XLR outputs, and the rugged all-metal housing1.
Power and connections
The ELITE runs on the included 9V DC auto-switching power supply, which comes with interchangeable international plugs for use anywhere in the world1. That is a different arrangement from the analog SansAmp Bass Driver DI Programmable, which Tech 21 lists as operable with a 9V alkaline battery (not included), via phantom power, or with the optional Tech 21 DC9 supply4.
For connections, the ELITE gives you a low impedance XLR output with Ground Lift to go direct to a PA desk or studio board, plus a 1/4-inch low impedance output with a Level Selector switch3. The effect loop1 lets you place your own pedals into the chain, and the included MIDI Driver3 handles preset switching and deep editing.
The ELITE's power arrangement differs from its analog sibling. The analog SansAmp Bass Driver DI Programmable can run on a 9V battery or phantom power4; the ELITE's listed power source is its included 9V DC auto-switching supply1.
Where it came from
The ELITE descends from the original SansAmp, which Bass Magazine describes as Andrew Barta's personal mission to encapsulate tube amplifier sounds in a compact, portable pedal2. The analog Programmable Bass Driver carried that idea into a pedal with programmable presets, and Tech 21 notes on that product's page that you can also place an external IR after a SansAmp for additional flavor4, an idea the ELITE builds in directly with its blendable IRs. For context on pricing in the family, Guitar World lists the analog Tech 21 SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver at $2695.

Questions
Who designed the SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver ELITE?
The ELITE comes from Tech 21 founder and inventor Andrew Barta. Barta had long been on a quest to bring the SansAmp approach into the digital domain, and the ELITE uses the same technology as the Marty Friedman Signature SansAmp, built on his digital replication of analog dynamics. It is designed and manufactured by Tech 21 USA, Inc.
How many presets does the Bass Driver ELITE hold?
In Performance mode it keeps your 3 main presets at the ready for live use. Switching to Studio mode opens up to 128 locations for custom presets, which you can build and edit over MIDI.
Does the Bass Driver ELITE have an XLR output?
Yes. It has a low impedance XLR output with a Ground Lift switch for going direct to a PA desk or studio board, plus a 1/4-inch low impedance output with a Level Selector switch.
What is the difference between Performance mode and Studio mode?
Performance mode is the live setup: your 3 main presets are immediately at the ready. Studio mode is the deep-editing setup, with up to 128 locations for custom presets covering amplifiers, blendable IRs, effects and EQ.
Is the Bass Driver ELITE analog or digital?
It is digital. Tech 21 built it as the digital domain version of the analog SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver, using Andrew Barta's digital replication of the dynamics, responsiveness and fluidity of the analog circuit.
